Beautiful plants and Fruit! I’m Karen Olivier and I am the breeder of Taiga. Glad you enjoyed it and I hope you might grow some of my other varieties this year.
    Have a great season :)

      Hi Karen!!!!
I am so honored that you discovered my channel!
Taiga was one of my favorite tomatoes grown this year!
Such a nice large fruited early variety with the beauty, flavor, and texture to match. It's similar to Ananas Noire, one of my personal all time favorites so far on flavor.
For me, your plant greatly outperformed in habit, production, and vigor though.
Curtis Cheek and Taiga are the reasons why I decided that 2022 will be a year where I place an emphasis on trialing Oxheart types.
I will absolutely look into some of your other creations... Tundra, True Colors, Midnight Sun, Polaris. They all look so good.
May I ask, what part of Canada are you out of?
Also, In your opinion, what are some personal favorite varieties of yours? Both from others and your own creations?
Dave says hello by the way...
I have him to thank for introducing me to Taiga.
      Best Always!

Mark! What a freaking AWESOME video!! 5 stars for sure! My absolute favorite video yet - and the pan of all the tomatoes at the end, plus the plants themselves, excellent, excellent excellent! I will need to find a way to incorporate some of these in my garden next year - VA Sweets, Persimmon and maybe Green Giant. Golden Jubilee has always been a favorite. Thanks again for the great video. Worth watching over and over again! ;-)

Green Zebra is a green one I grew last year that produces pretty uniform fruit all about racquetball size with no cracking or catfacing. However the first one I planted died last year and I had to replace it around June 20th so the plant was well behind the others and I only got a single crop in September. Don't know if it was a fluke or not, now I am finding my Thornburn's Terra Cotta is blight ridden with one plant dying but regrowing a second shoot from the base and a second affected moderately. Last Year my Brandywine got blight but the other Bonnie Hybrids like big beef and better boy did not.

Another great video! I've read that all tomato are between 4.5% and 4.9% acidity, and higher sugar ratio masks the actual acidity, which is why we think orange and yellow tomatoes seem to have less acidity. Not sure how reliable that is...just thought I'd mention. This would also explains why the Ball Book recommends (for food safety) adding lemon juice when canning tomatoes to increase acity above 5%.

I'll need to grow it to refresh my memory.
I have started a journal and ratings system to try to keep my memory sharp...
I find it to be a handy reference.

No Thornburn's Terra Cotta? I grew that one this year after seeing it in some videos and thought it was a pretty good tasting tomato. Similar flavor to black krim or the Kumato they have in the stores even though it is orange. Wonderful visual profile when sliced through. Sort of like the image of what things look like for the color blind with it's color profiles. Would love to see it tasted with the others as I haven't really grown more than about 12 varieties total in my garden I started in 2019. I am looking forwards to trying that Anais Noir and Green Giant next year. I have a small garden with room for about 7 plants so can't try as many as I'd like. I found tomatoes not too difficult to start from seed but had a great difficulty getting eggplant to sprout even with a heat mat. The Carbon in your other video looked stunning, I think I'll try that one too. How about "Green Zebra"? I grew that last year and thought it was delicious. Is green giant similar?

I researched a bunch of varieties based on flavor and there’s one called ‘Lithuanian Crested Pink’ that I think you should try. It’s a rare tomato since it’s very hard to find seeds online, but if you can obtain them, you should grow it for next year :)

How are things in Australia! You must be spreading the word because I've noticed my viewership is increasing a lot in your country which just amazes me! The UK, Canada, India, Philippines, Trinidad & Tobago, South Africa are growing pretty big also. It really is wild that I'm being watched in over 50 countries now and all but a few of the US states. I am just so lucky and so very thankful too! That I just never expected at all! Isn't that something!
Made you hungry!......lol Than I'm doing a good job! The video ending.....I want a true representation of everything I do, grow. That's why I left the plants as is. Part 3 will be this Friday night. I want to give people a break from me and tomatoes before they get sick of me! I would be sick of me by now and tomatoes if I was one of my viewers! lol

I ordered seeds today and half my new mater varieties to try next year came from your tasting videos. If you have a recommendation for an earlier large sweet tomato, let me know. Raspberry Lyanna is early but small and not yummy and most of my favorites (Hillbilly, Aunt Ruby's) that are large take quite a long time. Thanks again!
Edit: Mushroom Basket is a very early, very large red, but not a sweet mater. In case that works for someone else.

That would be great! Joyce, I'm always happy! One of my friends calls me "Pollyanna". I had no idea of what he meant and asked him what that meant. so Mark...what are a few of your favorite ways to eat your tomatoes...what are a few of your recipes w/ cooking them? I love tomatoes pretty much anyway you prepare or use them w/ exception of making them sweet.

    • @marksgardenlife5971
      @marksgardenlife5971  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Mike!
Actually, I mostly eat so many in the garden that for me, they almost lose appeal when cooked.
I prefer to "cook" with grape tomatoes most of all. They are very meaty and have a shape that holds well in different cuisine without falling apart or turning to mush.
My aunt told me just the other day... Boiled spaghetti, throw in some chunks of fresh tomato while the pasta is still hot, toss with olive oil, Salt, Pepper and serve. "Maybe a little basil if you're feeling adventurous"...
      Perfect quick summer dinner.
I love canning tomatoes and eating them straight from the jar. More often than not, I'll eat a whole quart jar in a single sitting.
And who can resist caprese salad???
I guess I've become sort of complacent with not adding much to a good tomato... they are just sooo good on their own, adding things doesn't always add up for me.
If you have some neat recipes, please post them!
I would like to venture out of my shell a bit.
      Thanks!

After much deliberation, I’m going with the Ananas Noire, Galaxy, Golden Jubilee, Green Giant, Oaxan Jewel, Virginia Sweets and White Tomesol (never tried a white before and now I’m curious). Lord help me lol. I’m thinking if I only do one plant of each variety then I’ll be able to get them all in my garden 😂.

I'm in the Sand Hills, which produces tall Longleaf pine, magnolias, azaleas and boxwood. The infrequent rain goes right through the sand; but it's so easy digging without Maryland clay underneath. George Washington called the Sand Hills some of the most worthless land in America!! @@marksgardenlife5971 I been trying to get up to Frederick since Covid started. I still have some property there that needs attention. Maybe this Fall I can make it. I may shoot over there to Harford County and see your nursery operation. Frederick is still nice, but really over developed. Aiken SC is like in 1970, its wonderful!!, but there are signs of that changing with new housing popping up. Still, a lot of the land is given over to horses and agribusiness and unlike so many SC small towns, Aiken's downtown is still alive with shops, restaurants and very few empty storefronts, kind of similar to Frederick in that way.
So, yes, put me on that spreadsheet of places you might want to visit. Aiken is at its best in March and April with azaleas blooming and horses running! Here's the local chamber of commerce video. www.visitaikensc.com/ It's not typical of South Carolina, which is nice. Also, Costa Farms has a big nursery operation in Trenton, SC, near Aiken. Might be something to see. There's also the RA Dudley nursery west of Augusta Ga across the Savannah River. www.radudley.com/ It's a big family run wholesale operation. And, yes, it's just as hot here in summer as in Maryland. Afternoons are always sleepy time, sitting by a fan in the shade trying not to stir!

Awesome tomato video!! I heard one wow & 2 other, two winners, maybe 3. Like the ending…could tell which were green & prolific. I picked the Ananas Noire, Oaxacan Jewel, Virginia Sweets & Green Giant. Where do you get most of your seeds? I see lots of BLT’s with pesto in the making! Best vid yet…keep getting better!

There was a paper written on tomato flavor and they found that the varieties with the green shoulders had a better flavor profile than those that ripen uniformly. What they found was that the "uniform ripening" gene disables two other genes responsible for adding to the flavor profile of tomatoes.

      Hi Max!
One of the things I decided I didn't want to do when I started was endorsing anyone because than viewers think I am getting something from that company and that may possibly hurt my credibility. If I say I like a certain variety, I want people to know that truly is how I feel and not because I am receiving something on the back end. I am starting a seed company next year and will carry all the varieties that I grow or have grown that I have found worth growing and a hefty percentage of the profits will go to a charitable trust I am setting up to benefit dogs/cats. Animal welfare is a huge thing to me and I really want to make a huge difference if I can. Sorry for that long explanation and I really do appreciate you asking. I know some viewers will read this and offer suggestions to you. Max, thank you for watching/commenting!

Rareseeds: Ananas Noire and Green Giant.
Edenbrothers: Aunt Ruby’s German Green and Golden Jubilee
Gaiaorganics (not a dot com, but a dot ca): Galaxy
Thecoeurdalenecoop: Oaxacan Jewel (Joya de Oaxaca is the name too) and White Tomesol
      Anniesheirloomseeds: Virginia Sweets
Hope this helps! Many blessings to you and yours! 🙏🏻💞🙌🏻
