What if the notion of God was too narrowly applied to Earth? What if God is how the Universe works, a Universe that harbors various seeds of life, not only on our planet. The Universe is converging to something, and that is God's plan. We, humans, are so low on the ladder of evolution we haven't even figured out too much about the Universe. We'll talk about the meaning of life once we get to understand more about what the Universe is converging, or emerging to. Today, what Humanity should focus on (and I think we do) is having a stable society which enables science expansion. This can sound solidly materialistic, but the low evolutionary level we are now at leaves humanity no choice but to try out being the do-ers. The alternative is we do get wiped out by the dying Sun.
Judging from the title of the video I was expecting some nihilistic, pseudo-intellectual polemics against teleological philosophies. Fortunately I was completely wrong, this interview was interesting and substantive. This guy is worth listening to. Thanks for the upload!
Life has no ultimate meaning. Group meaning can exist to the extent people share priorities. The meaning of life is that everyone must choose the answer to that question for themselves. No one can write your story for you.
I basically agree with Jean-Paul Sartre and existentialism. Life is far more absurd than we can grasp. But we have to grasp that absurdity by the horns and deal with it.
Meaning and axiology are intertwined. Since I know next to nothing about values, I know very little about meaning. I think this human being talking in the video is intelligent, more intelligent than most people are most of the time. Alexander Rosenberg is giving the scientistic account of this kind of metaethics.
no sure what he's saying, but if you believe we have choice (likely), then try to do something good with it. we are the current stewards of the earth, whether or not that matters long-term is hard to say, but in uncertainty try not to make the worst of the situation
Why is it 'likely' that we have a choice? Also if something is good in the short term does that mean its long term effects can be ignored (given a long enough time span)? Also your statement presupposes what is good. It also presupposes what 'making the most of something' is. How can you make something out of nothing? Can you demonstrate that nothing has become something?

Tartaglia didn't define his terms during this video, so I don't know whether I agree with him. I would agree that purposes are created by people, including how they were raised by their parents and by interactions with significant others. Tartaglia doesn't seem interested in exploring the degree to which there's consensus about purpose, or how to shape the purposes of other people, but perhaps that just didn't find its way into this interview. He seems too dismissive of materialism & determinism.
Actually, the idea of life itself having no meaning is beautiful. Because in that case humans can make life beautiful. Certain people should understand that life itself just exists, it has no purpose or meaning, it just 'is'. Of course, when you say that life has no meaning, those pepple will interpret it as if you mean that you think that human life, or nature has no meaning as in "value". But that is a mistake. Human life has value, we give meaning to our lives. So as for the rest of nature. But life itself just exists, as I mentioned before. Perhaps the religious way of think is still in de minds of.many people, were "God" would create the world, the universe, with a purpose, etc. It is a fairy tale. Life is beautiful, contains morality, is interesting and contains social structures without the need of a "purpose", "meaning" or "God". I will say it directly: grow up and learn about our planet, and about the universe.
"Certain people should understand that life itself just exists, it has no purpose or meaning, it just 'is'." Unsubstantiated arrogant claim. How the f do you know that?
Nihilism has a multitude of meanings. A rejection of moral principles, a belief there is no meaning to life, etc. Not just a rejection of a religious concept of life. Therefore nihilism is not usually beneficial to others or society and so should not be acceptable as it is danahing and selfish.
I would suggest that lack of meaning doesn’t work for a lot of people. Many of my friends in their 40’s who share nihilistic worldviews are the same friends who suffer depression. I think physicalism has created a false dicotomy in people’s minds that you either believe in flying spegetti monsters or you believe life has no meaning. I don’t think this is true - I have zero belief in theistic notions yet I get enormous joy and meaning out of studying philosophy & practing Zen. My point being: you can have deep meaning without having to deny rationalism or science!

Nice chap. I agree that determinism isn't true. Not in a absolute sense anyway. If everything was completely determined I doubt evolution would ever have led to the evolvement of neural systems.
Mr. Tartaglia demonstrates convincingly that life has no meaning by talking for fifteen minutes without saying anything remotely meaningful. Pseudo-philosophy at its finest.
A look at a life lived with meaning and morals, one can recognize the self sacrifice it takes to build, grow, make something worthy of one’s life and be good to one’s neighbor. A look at a life lived with no regard for meaning or morals, one can recognize a psychopath, liar, murderer. A society that recognizes human rights and laws is a meaningful society. A society devoid of human rights and laws is a war zone.

Make your own meaning. My, what an optimistic thought!
Good luck you'll need it.

This guy doesn't suck.
Definitions, definitions, definitions.
“Meaning” itself means too many things to be a useful term
Define furniture? Words have no meaning in themselves. Meaning must be sussed out from the context.

I stopped watching at His opinion on determinism.
