    Thanks, Steve! An old aircraft maintenance trick that accomplishes the same thing is to use a piece of chamois to filter the gasoline. Water stays in the chamois, gasoline passes through. Did this far too many times in Northern Ontario. Stay well!

    I recommended Mr. Funnel to you several years ago. I have a complete set of Mr. Funnels and love all of them. I fill a 5-gal No-Spill Poly Gas Can with Premium Unleaded gas at the filling station and then when I get back to my place, I pour 5-gallons from my plastic can into one of my 4 high-tech 5-gallon steel cans using Mr. Funnel. I then add Sta-bil and Lucus fuel treatment and then fill up a 2.5-gallon No-Spill Poly Gas Can again using Mr. Funnel for use in my equipment using un-mixed gas. I also fill up a 2.5-gallon No-Spill Poly Gas Can filtered again with Mr. Funnel and then add Stihl Synthetic mixed oil in a 40 to 1 ratio. I never have any gas problems in my lawn mower, snow blower, string trimmer, lawn edger, chain saw, etc.

    They work, but alcohol mixed with water will pass through, still very good tool to have. I've been cleaning the screen by pouring good fuel in backwards, and you can pour some water in first, to get it to the lower part of the screen. They say to just bang it out, but that will lead to damage.

  • @drizler

    Mr Funnel works like a CHAMPION. I’ve got the next bigger size from the one in the video. I store mine inside a gallon zip lock baggy. Fantastic for lawn mowers, outboards ect. My advice is If using for farm tractors large boats ect spend the cash buy the biggest one . It has two of those towers and should work at closer to the speed of a regular funnel. The singles are really slow for pouring from a 5 gallon can ect. Well worth the money and in my experience last a lifetime , 15 years and counting. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻😻
    I even used mine to salvage some old dirty rusty fuel oil to burn in my tractor.. NOTHING showed up in my clear bottle tests and clear prefilter. I did run it through twice to be sure and diluted it with a lot of new oil before running it but no problems at all. I can’t recommend these enough just don’t go cheap with a small one or you’ll be getting tired of holding that gas can really fast

    Steve, it is because of your tube videos that I learned how to properly maintain my first Still chainsaw. Needless to say, when I recently bought a MS360 that had only been run about 15 min, it was your video on how to start a flooded chainsaw by holding the throttle and pulling the hell out of it to get it going. I got a steal on the saw as nobody had been able to start it.

    • @JohnSmith-tv5ep
      @JohnSmith-tv5ep 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Thinking Impaired, can you really separate the water from ethanol fuel to truly make non-ethanol fuel? I have seen a few videos of this, but really don't know.

    • @thinkingimpaired5663
      @thinkingimpaired5663 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@JohnSmith-tv5ep yes it's easy because ethanol loves water. And gasoline hates water. Get a glass cup or bottle add half gas and add about 20% water. The fluids will separate much like oil and vinegar separate in salad dressing.
      Water ethanol will be on the bottom. Some people add food coloring to make it easy to tell the difference.
      So if you design a container that you can drain off what's on the bottom of the mix you'll remove the ethanol water mix.

    I'd been useing Outerwear products funnel pre-filter screen for years before seeing, then buying the Hoppy product. They all seem to work well, but with the Outwears product, you simply slip them over the top of your existing funnel plus being right out on top, inside the funnel, it's easy to wipe any goo that came out your old fuel jug with a paper towel. When I purchased mine years back, I got a pre-filter for my 2 quart and one for a 4 quart funnel for bigger jobs. Use my little Hoppy funnel for the small stuff, but because of it's less surface area, it doesn't filter as rapidly as the big Outerwear pre-filters do. But they are all effective for "wringing" water out of your fuel. Despite ALWAYS filling up at a station with a pump marked "No Alchohol" (sorry, Steve, no offense ;^), but invariably funnels will occasionally still pull water out, do to fuel jugs taking on some humidity because sometimes wildly varying temperatures (ie like a cold one sweating on a humid day- here's to you Steve) causes the fuel inside the jug, even with its lid and vent on, to still occasionally draw moisture.

    Off the Mr funnel site: Q. Will the filter work on mixed fuel with 2-cycle oil in it?
    A. Yes, but if your 2-cycle oil has a detergent base the detergents can break down molecules of water and some water might pass the screen. Usually only a drop or two but if you are concerned, filter the fuel a second time because unless the sump is full of water, it is not possible that any water passed the filter.

  • @Shubsru

    I got educated about water in avgas years ago as a new airplane pilot. Many general aviation airplanes have fuel caps on the top of the wing that go bad and allow water in or sometimes water condensates in the tank itself. A pre-flight item was to always check for water in the fuel tanks (sumping the tanks). Jet fuel has an additive to overcome water in jet fuel. No worries there. No sumping needed.

    They work great, as long as the water is not emulsified in the fuel. They also don't work so well if you shake or agitate the fuel can that has water in it before using the funnel, as it temporarily bonds with the fuel and it passes through the coated screen with the fuel, and will soon separate back out of suspension and you will then have water in your equipment's fuel tank anyway.

      I only buy premium unleaded with no ethanol for my equipment and so the only water I'm straining out is from the water in the bottom of the 10,000-gallon tank at the filling station. The water sits in my gas can for 10 minutes before I transfer it into my steel gas can. I've conducted a few tests with a granulated test tube and after the ethanol and water are shaken, it only takes a few minutes for the water to precipitate out of the solution. My gas station gas has negligible water in it.

He was tight as a ducks arsehole and slack with maintenance (he ruined chainsaw bars cutting up pallets ffs). Anyway, when he drained the fuel test tubes on the chopper he couldn't bear to throw away the >200cc of watery Avgas, so, he'd put it in his ride on mower.. A ride on mower he used to tow the helicopter in and out the hanger on its rolling platform. The poor old Briggs didn't much like running on a mix of petrol, water and aviation fuel and refused to start one day meaning he couldn't go collect Van Morrison from Bristol airport. Allegedly the Belfast Cowboy was well pissed off and sued him for loss of earnings..

    The funnel looks like a good addition to the equipment shed if you mix a gallon of 2 stroke gas at a time from 5 gallon cans. Otherwise, my Wright ZK mower holds 15 gallons of gas, I empty at least two 5 gallon cans when I fuel it with cans, so all of my 5 gallon cans get emptied completely before I go fill them back up. There's not much chance of collecting condensation in them that way either, and storing them inside keeps rainwater out of the cans also. .

I always have drop of water with bits of dirt grass and leaves, from who knows where in my containers, and like all of us sometimes need to get the last drop of fuel out, and either end up with water or bits in the tank, or more often pouring away the last bit of stored fuel. I'd like to find a big funnel like the one that you had. Are they available at tractor supply companies?

    My problem is that there is a reservoir in the bottom of the funnel that never drains. That leaves an ounce of ?? that I have to deal with

    Hey those funnels work great! I got onto using them few years ago after a fly in fishing trip talked to the pilot they use them in aircraft because the fuel would freeze at high altitudes if any water present in the fuel after they started to use those funnels no more issues
