I disagree with a few things he said, but overall they're really solid tips and these are definitely the 4 most important plugins for voice recordings 👍
    Some advice I would offer:
-Do not treat the compressor like a volume knob. Adjust your volume on the audio itself first to get it in the general range you want and then finesse the compressor to smooth it out
-The limiter within the compressor plugin is not a True Peak limiter and I do not recommend relying on it. Use the separate limiter plugin.
-Much like color grading, the order you apply the plugins matters a lot. I recommend EQ -> compressor -> de-esser -> limiter (always put the limiter last)
-Various platforms have their own guidelines for target levels for audio. TH-cam's True Peak threshold is -1db, so that means you should set your compressor to -1db on the output level (I recommend -1.1). If your audio goes above this, TH-cam will normalize your audio to -1db, meaning everything gets turned down so the loudest sound is at that level. If you ever notice your youtube video being quieter than it sounds in Final Cut, this is why.

Regarding limiter might it be the difference between Peak vs RMS values being used?

A quesstion about Compression and volume is that you can adjust the volume first on the "track", increase the gain on input and then make up any lost "gain" on output or going back to the "track" and increasing it there to compensate for the new lower level. Always interested in hearing how others approach this and why.

By no means am I an audio engineer, but I have found this workflow gets me most of the way there especially for client viewings -sound is half the experience, I will definitely adjust the stacking order of the effects - Thanks for the suggestions Stuart!

@@seecraig I believe the limiter within the compressor is a sample peak limiter and not a true peak limiter. I definitely have seen micro transients get through the ceiling, which is why I recommend just sticking with the dedicated limiter in True Peak detection mode.

Pro audio engineer here. The EQ section of this is not very comprehensive and also unintentionally misleads. Sweeping EQ bands up with 20db of gain will make all kinds of things ring out and sound terrible that really don't. those giant -12db cuts are almost wholly unnecessary unless you have a frequency that's openly causing problems at normal levels - not +20db. No one is listening to your audio with every frequency +20db, and neither should you. Those big +8-10db boosts are also largely not needed. Understanding where the human voice actually sits and how EQ moves affect the rest of the spectrum is really important here. I find it interesting that he has an EQ inserted before a de-esser trying to correct that huge high-frequency boost he created in the EQ section. Try putting your De-esser first and getting rid of those frequencies before you EQ. Setting a compressor to kick in at -20db tells me you aren't correctly recording the audio. that's super quiet. You should be recording at -18 to -12db RMS on the way in. If you're in that range and your compressor kicks in at -20db you're compressing the entire signal. That's squashed. When you record that low and then introduce compression you can often end up hearing some hiss - that's the noise floor of your equipment. Try setting it so the peaks are being reduced a 2-4dbs and then increasing makeup gain. He has the auto gain in the compressor set to 0db and then a limiter set to -3. That audio is getting pumpy by the end of this.

Regarding the difference between a Compressor and a Limiter perhaps one might say, that the Compressor narrows the dynamic range, whereas the limiter focuses on the peaks.
Regarding Attack and Release it might be impacted by how fast one speaks and one's pronunciation. You don't want to be still releasing when it should be kicking back in for the next word. If you hear a kind of "pumping" or "breathing" you might have to adjust those numbers. Also, vowls vs consents and especially fricatives and plosives can have an impact. The hardest part is even when you understand the concepts can you hear the issues.

The limiter must be at the end of the audio effects chain because it's a "limiter". The compressor also creates peaks that are not being controlled.

INSTANTLY purchased this with your code. I've been looking for a more advanced FCPX course for a while. Thank you so much for sharing, and thanks Ludwig for making this. Can't believe this was only $150 with the code lmao. Would have paid way more. 🤣
