Oh yeah, the lip chain of Baekhyun was groundbreaking, Putting a chain on your face and looking mysterious became a thing after this, then in 2019 Baekhyun came back with a different face chain, nowadays they attached crystal, pearls, accessorizing it more . EXO made so many trends in K-pop, not just fashion trends but their music had much more effect on K-pop's present sound. Overdose, Growl, Call Me Baby, and Monster are basically songs that define today's K-pop sound.

Because you asked, let me explain what is thought to be happening in EXO's "What is Love" MV. In order to understand the story in this MV, as well as all of EXO's content, you have to know that it's all part of the group's concept, and every new piece that's introduced explains a little more of EXO's story. Each MV is like another chapter in SM Entertainment's SM Culture Universe storyline and it's all part of a larger story that also includes the majority of SM's other groups' and artists' storylines. It's like one giant graphic novel or mystery movie series.
EXO debuted back in 2012, and from the very beginning their concept is that they are aliens from Planet Exo who have come to Earth with superpowers to protect the Tree of Life from the Red Forces. And as otherworldly beings, each of the 12 members has a superpower that is unique to them.
Although "What is Love" is a love song, the MV really doesn't have a whole lot to do with the song. The storyline in the MV is all about EXO's origin story and it is showing the members as they first arrived here on Earth.
This was their very first pre-debut MV -- about 3 or 4 months before their debut with "Mama" -- so it is setting up EXO's storyline and it's showing the members. This was before most people really even knew who EXO were. In the EXO-K (Korean) version you only hear D.O. and Baekhyun singing. However, in the MV you see all 12 members. The rest of the members aren't singing the song, but they are helping to tell a story.
As you may have noticed, you see an eclipse is happening. The eclipse is what controls EXO's powers and it's where they get their power and strength from. So, that is why you see in most of their MVs that they focus on the moon or show an eclipse taking place, etc. EXO are aliens so staring at an eclipse or the sun doesn't affect them in the same way. After all, they come from Planet Exo, which has two suns. LOL
In the scenes were you see D.O and Baekhyun singing, that is thought to be showing clues to EXO's storyline, such as the light that is streaming through the holes in the walls is thought to be representing Baekhyun's superpower, which is the ability to control light, and the fact that the room they are in is kind of disheveled could be after D.O. used his power of force.
You also see scenes such as Chanyeol (a member of EXO-K) looking at a drawing of a unicorn and comparing it to a hieroglyph of a unicorn on a piece of rock, which is thought to be something to do with the fact that he is searching for Lay (an EXO-M -- Mandarin Chinese -- member). Lay's symbol is a unicorn, which represents his power of healing. I think the rocks are clues that may have been left on Earth or on Planet Exo from ancient times. (You will see these symbols all over the place in EXO content because each member has a symbol that represent them and their symbols are often used kind of like a call beacon. When one member is looking for another member, or they want to send a member a message, you will see a version of their symbol appear. It's a way to know who the message is coming from and it's designed to make everyone aware that it's something important that you need to pay attention to.) Think of the message on those rocks like Egyptian hieroglyphs.
Therefore, I see it as EXO has to find the clues that someone has left from the past. Just like in real life history, often ancient civilizations have left us clues to tell their story in order to make sure whatever happened to them doesn't get repeated. Therefore, I think someone has left EXO clues, just in case sometime in the future the Red Force was able to gain power once again. Hence, why in EXO's next pre-debut song "History" they talk about not wanting to allow whatever happened previously to repeat itself (i.e. they need to stop and prevent history from repeating itself. And they need to learn from history by discovering clues that will help them understand what happened in the past, in order to figure out a way to make sure the same mistakes aren't repeated, etc.)
And because it is thought that the EXO members can travel between time periods and dimensions, this could also mean that the clues could have possibly been left for them by their future selves. The future EXO members have traveled back in time to leave a message for the present day EXO members in order to help them figure out how to stop the Red Force and prevent whatever happened in the future from taking place, etc.
The clues I think are something they need in order to find the Tree of Life and to do whatever needs to be done in order to create peace in the world once again, and free humanity and EXO from the control of the Red Force. Which will allow the Tree of Life to be whole once again and be at peace, no longer being used as a potential weapon by the Red Force, etc.
In reality, I think the Red Force could be thought of as a symbol of all the things society is dealing with in the world and all the bad things that need to be fixed, such as war, hate, destruction of the environment, corruption, etc.
I interpret SM's wide-reaching message within their SM Cultured Universe and EXO's storyline as the dream of world peace. Therefore, I'm not sure we will ever see an official end to EXO's storyline or the SM Culture Universe story because World Peace is such a lofty goal that will never be accomplished fully. So in other words, EXO's story may be an open ended one that never gets solved.
I think the whole point of SM creating the SM Culture Universe storyline is because it's supposed to be a social commentary on what real life society needs to learn and do in order to create a better world. Think of everything in the SM Universe, and EXO's storyline, as a metaphor for what is happening all around us every day and what we have gone through in the past and will go through in the future if we don't learn from our mistakes, etc.
In the MV for "What Is Love," you see clips from some of their pre-debut teaser videos. All the clips in the MV are special clips that were originally released one at a time on their own to introduce EXO to the world, before the group's official debut. Before EXO debuted, SM released 23 teaser videos over a 3 month period and the videos showcased the members and their talents, such as Kai's special dance clips and Tao's martial arts skills, as well as told a story about EXO who are on a quest to find each other and to find clues to locate the Tree of Life, etc. Kai was the member that was featured in the most teasers -- somewhere around 10 videos. The "What is Love" MV takes clips from those teaser videos and puts them together to make the MV.
Months and years later, we have also discovered that the teasers also were teasers to EXO's discography of songs. At the time, when the teasers were released, we had no idea the significance of the songs that you hear in the teasers. But now, over the years, we have discovered that the majority of the songs that were featured in EXO's pre-debut teasers were also meant to be teasers to songs that would be released as some of the main tracks of EXO's albums.
All the teasers are still on SM's TH-cam channel if you want to check them out. If you watch the teasers, you will see how planned out everything EXO is involved in actually is. Most of the songs that they released even years after debut were songs that were teased to in their pre-debut teaser videos. That just goes to show you why we say that everything EXO does comes back to their storyline. :D Absolutely everything has been planned out down to the most minute detail for years in advance and for years to come.

EXO's "Monster" was released in 2016, so there are 9 members in this MV. Like everything EXO does, the story in the MV is another chapter in EXO's storyline and it explains a little more of what EXO is doing here on Earth.
As the English lines in "Monster" say ... They're "Creeping, Creeping Creeping .... Creeping in your heart babe" "You can call me Monster (because) I'm creeping in your heart babe." "She got me goin' crazy." The song's called "Monster," so the words are about acting like a monster: "Don't be afraid, love is the way ... I'm sorry, you make me sooo craaaazzzy, you know you dooooo."
Therefore, the floating watch and the car that is on fire in reverse, etc., I think -- on top of being a metaphor in the story -- also was supposed to be the members using their superpowers. And the snake, like a monster, mirrors the beat of the song, which kind of slithers like a snake as a metaphor for the way the guy slithers in and out of the relationship stealing warmth and affection from the girl, but in the end, leaving her cold and alone like a cold-blooded snake, etc. The snake is also red, which means that it most likely represents something to do with the the Red Force.

However, if you look up the English translation of the lyrics, you will see in the song, the members are talking about a girl and they are telling the girl that "You can call me Monster" because I know I am bad for you and I will ruin you. I know that when we are over that I will have destroyed everything that is good about you, but I don't care because I want you so much that it doesn't matter to me. Which could be a metaphor for EXO's connection to the heart of the Tree of LIfe.
The woman in EXO's songs is often thought to be a metaphor and physical representation of the Tree of Life. That is why the members are always trying to save the girl or protect her, or they talk about being controlled by the power of the woman or they are worried about their passion destroying her, etc. It's EXO's job to protect the Tree of Life from the Red Force. EXO was sent to Earth on a mission to find the two halves of the tree and reunite them in order to restore peace in the world. The two halves of the tree -- EXO-K (Korean) represents one half and EXO-M (Mandarin Chinese) represents the other half -- were originally separated in order to keep the Red Force from gaining control. However, now, in order to fix all the things that are going wrong in the world, EXO needs to defeat the Red Force and find where the two halves of the tree have been hidden.
Therefore, the story in the "Monster" is all about EXO's origin story and about how they are trying to stop the Red Force from corrupting humanity, while also trying to find clues to where the Tree of Life is located.
Also, the majority of the choreography for "Monster" has to do with the members using their powers, so when/if you watch the dance practice and/or a live performance, if you know what you are looking for, you will see that each move is done for a very specific reason. The X they make to represent EXO is only the beginning of the story in their choreography.
For example, D.O. has the power of super strength, so during his part in the song and choreography you will see that he waves his hands and the other members are pushed away from him or pulled toward him. When you see Suho in the middle of the group and they have a hold of his arms, he rotates his body around like swirling water because Suho has the power to control water. Xiumin has the power to control snow/ice/frost, so during one part of the choreography you will see that each of the members pause as if frozen as he moves in front of them. You see Kai slide backward and forward into the center of the group while waving his arms to represent him teleporting. And when Chanyeol jumps over Lay, Sehun and Xiumin, this could be him using his phoenix fire wings to fly, or it could be showing him leaping over flames because his power is the ability to control fire. Sehun has the power to control wind, so during his parts, you will see the other members shuffle around him as if they are creating a windstorm. And when they sit on the ground with their one knee in the air and rotate their bodies, it's supposed to represent a sundial -- EXO gets their power from the eclipse and their powers are affected by planetary and solar phenomenon, so the sundial is meant to represent the passing of time and their connection to the sun. (Even some of EXO's comebacks were released on days when we had a real eclipse or other planetary phenomenon, etc.)
You should also make note that "Lotto" is a prequel to "Monster," so when you watch their "Lotto" MV, just keep in mind that what you saw happen in "Monster" is what is going to take place after or in conjunction with the events in "Lotto".
How "Monster" and "Lotto" tie into EXOs larger storyline is a little open ended, but because "Lotto" is thought to be the prequel to "Monster," I think the story starts out in "Lotto" where the members have somehow infiltrated this big gambling ring and are undercover as they work to uncover a clue or something they need in order to accomplish their tasks here on Earth. I think the underground gambling establishment is run by a gang of bad guys who are probably members of the Red Force.
"Lotto" is where we are introduced to a girl who is being held captive. And ultimately, I think what EXO are trying to do is rescue the girl from the Red Force, but they are trying to do it without blowing their cover or being found out. So, that's why you see in "Lotto," and continued in "Monster," the members are fighting against the police because the police have come in to take down the gambling ring and rescue the girl, which is also what EXO are trying to do. However, the members of EXO don't want to be discovered, so they play along as if they are part of the bad guys. EXO are supposed to be going about their tasks here on Earth incognito, and humanity is never supposed to find out about EXO, so they are trying to keep a low profile.
As we see in the end of "Monster," Baekhyun disguises himself as one of the police and helps the other members escape from the back of the police van before they are taken to jail and/or captured by the Red Force, etc. (However, if you look closely, the members who are in the back of the police van are dressed in red, so the ones who Baekhyun rescued may be X-EXO -- EXO's alter ego clones -- and not EXO like we originally thought. Although I'm not sure whether at this point Baekhyun realizes these aren't the EXO members. Or maybe Baekhyun is also a member of X-EXO. Just another giant mystery we have yet to solve.)
You also see Lay, EXO's Chinese member, crouched in the middle of what looks like a pile of people -- I'm not sure whether these are the FBI agents, or if these are members of the Red Force -- and I think he is checking to make sure they are OK and possibly trying to use his power of healing to fix things and heal the injured.
Because some theories believe that EXO are traveling between time periods and dimensions, I think in "Monster" they also might be showing how some of the members are arriving on scene at different moments in the timeline of events that are taking place in the MV -- the members don't necessarily arrive at the location together -- as explained in their Pathcode teaser videos leading up to their "Call Me Baby" comeback. For instance, in "Monster" you also see Kai standing on or near a giant pile of people as well, and he seems to be standing over them. Some have pointed to this as possibly showing evil X-EXO Kai, who has done something bad, but I think this may be showing good EXO Kai, who has just shown up at that moment, observing what has taken place. Because Kai has the power of teleportation, he is the one that is in charge of bringing the members together and traveling between time and space, so I think he has shown up from a different time or place and is now trying to figure out what has happened, etc.
In EXO's "Obsession" MV the members in the bright colored clothing with the crazy makeup and hair are supposed to be X-EXO -- EXO's alter ego clones who have been created by the Red Force -- and the ones in the black or dark colored clothing are supposed to be EXO -- the good guys. So, in the parts where they are dressed in all black in "Monster" I think this is showing EXO, and where you see them in the clothing with red accents, this might by showing X-EXO. At the time when "Monster" was first released, we had no idea about X-EXO's existence, but since "Obsession" -- which is one of EXO's more recent releases -- we have started to go back and reanalyze some of their older MVs, and it appears that what we thought was always EXO, may have been in fact X-EXO some of the time.
As you can see, EXO's story is always evolving and changing, and just when you think you have one part understood, SM introduces a new piece of the story and changes the direction of the narrative.
Also, in EXO's MVs when you see red light or red objects this is thought to be where the Red Force has control, and when you see blue light or blue objects this is thought to be where EXO has the upperhand. However, if you see purple or red and blue in the same scene this is when EXO and the Red Force are battling for control -- red and blue mixed together make purple.
Unfortunately, as you can see, what makes EXO's storyline even more difficult to follow is the fact that nothing is ever in chronological order. So you really have to pay close attention to every detail, to even begin to make connections.

EXO originally had 12 members, 6 EXO-K members and 6 EXO-M members. In "Call Me Baby," you see 10 members because this MV was the first MV after Kris and Luhan left the group and it was the last MV where we see Tao. In the beginning, each of EXO's sub-units had the same number of members. Each member in EXO-K also has a partner in EXO-M that fills the same role in their respective group. For example, Baekhyun is the main vocalist in EXO-K and Chen is the main vocalist in EXO-M; D.O. is the other main vocalist in K and Luhan was the other "main" vocalist in M; Chanyeol is the main rapper in K and Kris was the main rapper in M; Sehun is the lead rapper in K and Xiumin is the lead rapper in M; Kai is the main dancer in K and Lay is the main dancer in M; and then it's Suho is a lead vocalist in K and Tao was a rapper/vocalist in M, (I'm not sure how these two really work together because Tao is more of a rapper and Suho is a vocalist, but because they are the last two they are put together.)
