Pigeons are animals who create strong bonds... I have a pigeon loft with lots of them.. You can just keep a pigeon somewhere for a couple weeks with proper care, feeding and shelter and it'll make it it's home and most likely won't ever leave
You left out one of the biggest differences: THEY AREN'T LOUD! Parrots YELL. They SCREECH. If you can't do noise, or if you live in a situation where noise is not tolerated, but still want a bird, pigeons and doves are perfect.
Worked at a ice cream shop where we made our own waffle cones, and we would save the broken bits in a tub labeled "for Bartholomew" Bartholomew was a pigeon that came to us in the back alley for help after being attacked by a cat and had all his tail feathers ripped out. He was so patient and sweet, always on time to get his snacks before hiding for the day. He eventually healed enough to make it out on his own, but we would catch glimpses of him stopping by for a quick "coo" E: can't believe I forgot to clarify I took it upon myself to feed him millet and sunflower after a couple of weeks of visitation, when he made it obvious he was there to stay (for the short run) 🥴
i worked in a seafront ice cream place and we had a regular pigeon with one foot called stumpy - he also enjoyed the occasional snack and came by every day at around 5pm
Pigeons are social animals and are not naturally afraid of humans, unlike other animals. They are very quiet too, even the sound they make is not loud. Getting them to trust you is exceptionally easy. The pigeon's proper name is Rock Dove.
When I was a kid, we found a pigeon trapped under a large rock. We took it home and nursed it back to health. Became a wonderful pet that bonded with my dad and spent his time following him everywhere. Sweet, sweet, pet.
I live in a downtown area and have the most beautiful flock of pigeons that live in the big building down the street. There's a few that are almost as white as a doves with cream colored patches. When it's raining or snowing they make walking the Dog so much more enjoyable because they're so tranquil and beautiful to watch especially on a quiet afternoon or early morning!
Yep. I’m considering getting a pigeon cuz a parrot is too loud for my household and definitely requires a bit more attention/effort. But I do still love parrots.
Once i raised a baby pigeon when she was grew up she always follows me wherever i went ❤and always kissing my fingers❤then she becomes sick and died RIP
we used to have this lovely pair of pigeons visit our balcony. we called them mr and mrs because they took care of each so much. they would sit quietly, wait for a feed and just be so calm and relaxed with us. when it rained, they used our balcony for shelter and protected each other. they brought their little ones until the little ones were old enough to 'leave the nest' so to speak. mr and mrs were such lovely pigeons, i'll never forget them.
Also: whereas larger parrots can live upwards of 40-60 years, pigeons have about the same lifespan of a cat at 15. You'll worry less about making a near lifelong commitment. Another thing: pigeons are quiet. If you live in an apartment, your neighbors won't even know you have a bird. And: pigeons are very cute. ❤
I have nothing against them, but pigeons are not quiet. I can't compare to other pet birds but i have some experience with domesticated pigeons and those mfs are vocal af
@@cookienoodles True, that can be a pro or a con I guess. Like me for example, I'm still young, have no idea what my life is going to look like in 35+ years, and I wouldn't want to risk having to rehome a parrot because I couldn't forsee major lifestyle changes. BUT if I had a pretty good idea of what I'd be doing up until the bird's death, the long lifespan would be great.
My parents hate pigeons (the wild ones) and I somewhat agree with them. I do believe if you train/love and nurture a pigeon enough that they will make great pets! I’ve handled a few fancy pigeons before and they were pretty pleasant to be around 😊
Wild ones only flock around humans eating cause they're smart enough to remember and recognize the paterns of people occasionally throwing them a morsel, so they keep coming back A monster of our own creation, but most just blame the animal for seizing the best opportunity to survive and thrive We, as a species do much worse on the daily to achieve the same
@@439801RSExactly, they are just trying to survive after their homes were taken from them. The ones living in the city aren't as clean but it's only because cities are disgusting and there's not much places for them to safely hide and sleep.
nah.most house cats aren't even domesticated.(you can't fact check if you're doubting me) the only domesticated cats are the very modern breeds that's quite expensive
it's true, pigeons were first domesticated nearly 10,000 years ago. however they were originally for eating, not necessarily as pets. Then we found out about their homing instincts and used them for mail!
Last summer a stray pigeon randomly showed up at my house on our truck (we live in a more rural suburb) and seemed to immediately get attached to me. It would constantly follow me around as I did yard chores and would try and hop up on me if I knelt down. If I went back inside it’d go back to the truck. If I came out, it’d fly back towards me. It was… strangely endearing. I wish I took it in now. I didn’t at the time because we’ve got cats and dogs and I had no clue if this bird was already someone’s pet or where to even begin in terms of pigeon care. So I just gave it some seed and left it outside, looked for any missing pigeon notices online. My mom eventually needed to use the truck and slowly drove until the pigeon flew off. A couple days later, I find a bunch of familiar colored feathers and a severed bird leg in the backyard. I’m confident it was that bird since I haven’t seen it around all through winter. I’m still bummed about it.
My mom and I rescued a baby pigeon when I was little. I think it's leg was broken. We set it free when it grew up and could fly. Some weeks later, we saw the same one again on a roof, snuggled up with a new friend
Oh that's so sweet 😭😭 I remember when I was about 7, my mom's friend found a baby pigeon that had an injury and couldn't fly back to it's parents, so she picked it up and put it in a little box and brought it home. I was younger then so I cannot remember what else happened clearly
I had doves growing up. They were legitimately the sweetest little peas! Now I have a nesting pair of mourning doves on my balcony and I get to see them raise their little babies every season! Every time I see pigeons I get so happy. They’re all very, very sweet and often under-appreciated animals!
Same. I always loved birds and wanted a pet one. Pigeons are the best choice in my opinion, because they're not as loud as parrots. I also have a cat, and she would probably try to kill the pigeon, so I'll get one when I move out
Definitely easily entertained 😂 I've got 5 doves (practically the same as pigeons haha) and their favorite thing in the world is shredded newspaper and a good bath now and then
Me and my family used to have a dove and a few pigeons, we found the dove in our backyard with an injured wing because someone shot it, and my family decided to adopt pigeons so the dove wasn't lonely, unfortunately the dove passed away 2 year ago and the pigeons were released due to food aggression
I had the pleasure of getting to know a pigeon that my birth mom had. He took to me almost immediately when I stayed with her for a few days, and he was my absolute best friend the entire time. Wanted to snuggle against me, play with me, and be in my business constantly. Whatever I was doing, he wanted to be a part of it. Such a bright little soul! A real character. They're lovely birds.
ik this is prolly gonna sound dumb af but when I used to have budgie birds as pets, they shit like a lot so I'm genuinely curious. do pigeons shit a lot too? lmao cuz bird's poop is a lil hard to clean from surfaces that aren't smooth, like bed sheets an all. but still, I love pigeons and I think that out of all the pets I've done research about, pigeons just seem to click to me.
A pigeon used to live in our balcony my grandma would feed her baby when they hatch haha! Unfortunately both my grandma and pegions are gone forever now. They were such a sweet memories.
So true! I worked at a pet shop for years and highly recommend pigeons and doves for children! They're so sweet, cuddly, and have a beautiful quiet coo as the noise they make!
I rescued a young pigeon that coudn't fly and was extremly hurt, she was all bloody and had severe injuries, i could literally see her insides, i managed to heal them all in a month with food, water medicine and baths but my mom forced me to give her to my dad and a month later or something like that he got tired of the pigeon because it was still scared, coudn't walk properly or fly because her wing was broken and wasn't properly healed but he wouldn't pay a surgery either so he killed her and told me she magically "died" :/
I about 1 year ago found an injured pigeon on the sidewalk, its wing was torn, so i brought it to my home and treated the wing, we had him home for about 12 days, in which we treated his wing, fed and played with him - when we released him we barely got him to fly off and even now, about a year afterwards every so often he lands at our apartment's window and we give him some bread.
@@mel999.Wet bread is fine to give to birds like pigeons, ducks, and chickens occasionally as treats. they're also very cute and when my back hurt, mine would lie down on that area on his own and warm it up with his mega body heat. hahahaha, he was super cute and I liked when he would dance to music he liked, there were only a few songs he liked with fiddles that he would dance to. one of his favorite snacks was peas. depending on where you live, rock doves ("feral" domestic pigeons) are free to be kept! theyre kinda like "feral" housecats here, invasive species that you can catch and keep. also, theyre thought to be direct descendents of war pigeons, just a lil fun fact! but if you want a fancy pigeon, theres plenty of pigeon breeders all over the world. just read into those if youre interested and learn what each breed is like. good luck!

Worked at a ice cream shop where we made our own waffle cones, and we would save the broken bits in a tub labeled "for Bartholomew"
Bartholomew was a pigeon that came to us in the back alley for help after being attacked by a cat and had all his tail feathers ripped out. He was so patient and sweet, always on time to get his snacks before hiding for the day. He eventually healed enough to make it out on his own, but we would catch glimpses of him stopping by for a quick "coo"

---Here birdy birdy
