- Waylon Jennings, American singer-songwriter and musician, discusses country music's history, the Outlaw Movement and his book “Waylon” on this episode of NPT’s original literary series A Word on Words with John Seigenthaler. In Nashville Public Television’s A Word on Words, renowned journalist John Seigenthaler held in-depth and informed discussions with writers, historians and others. Guests over the series’ 40-year run (1972 to 2013) is impressive and includes Ann Patchett, Billy Collins, Rep. John Lewis, astronaut Alan Shepard and Rodney Crowell.
The show’s host may have been its most fascinating subject, however. John Seigenthaler served as editor of The Tennessean, founding editor of USA Today, assistant to Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy, and chair of the selection committee for the Robert F. Kennedy Book Award. He was a passionate advocate of the First Amendment and founded the First Amendment Center at Vanderbilt University in 1991.

Waylon just radiates “cool”.
My mother loved Waylon and recruited me to go to one of his concerts when I was late in my teenage years. I was so embarrassed that I would not tell my friends. He was absolutely fantastic that night. Mom and I went to many of his concerts, and I just loved his booming voice. When I miss her, I play Waylon's music and sing and dance. Great interview!!!
Waylon was a REAL MAN. He possessed self- control, politeness, a sense of humor, good- heartedness, good-looks, and uncanny strength. What a role model!

Like a great many other's, I love Cash, Jones, Willie, both Hank's & The Hag, but there was just something about Waylon that made him my absolute favorite artist ever! The image, the way he carried himself, the love story of he & Jessie, hell the bromance between he & Willie as well! 😂
and of course his great-great music is the foundation of it all....

Miss you Waylon....
We Waylon fans forgive him for all his errors. He recognized what he did wrong and took to fixing the issue. And created some of the best music around, as a result. Shame he died so young, but we have his extensive music catalog to listen to the rest of our days.
I wish he and Tompall Glaser could have resolved their issues with each other before Waylon passed.
For one thing Waylon lived his life and didn't hide it...90percent of the artist was addicted but the difference is Waylon was the most honest about everything he did.. Waylon was the most honest person and always had his friends back..TomPaul stole a lot of money from Waylon so I am happy Waylon never let him come back..

My husband loved blues and played a guitar Avd a base guitar.
Such a humble and honest man.
Only in this interview I noticed his American Indian bloodlines and confirmed with reading about his life that like many famous talented people he indeed has the native dimension which gives him that fabulous edge to his disposition!
I did a Maxwell House Coffee tour with Jerry Reed and Waylon back in the early to mid 80’s. We had a duet with Waylon and Reed produced by Ric Hall...!! It must have charted in the teens to early 20s on the charts. Waylon and Jerry were great people to work for. Class acts all the way.
The name of the tune was an old SamAnd Dave hit titled “Hold on I’m Coming”.

Real country music is officially dead. Today's "country" music is pretentious and tries to convince you it's country by the singers introducing artificial twang or singing about trucks & tailgates, barbed wire, dirt roads, jean shorts, etc. Luckily my turntable doesn't know any better and I'm in control of what plays in my music room.
I saw Jamey Johnson in concert a few weeks ago. His name doesn’t need to be mentioned anywhere near Waylon. It’s an insult to Waylon and those few like him.

Johnny Cash died in 2003 or 2004, if it's his death year that you're asking about.
Both Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash passed away in 2003. June died from complications during heart surgery in May of 2003. Johnny died four months after June, in September of 2003.
