    Finally found someone that can communicate, how refreshing. Very good explanation. I knew nothing and now understand the game, some of the other videos are a lesson on how to get confused.

    I had trouble understanding this game at first but after a few practice games against the computer i figured it out. I have been missing out on playing this beautiful game all my life, I am 41 and finally decided to learn how to play this game last week. I have already had many amazing games with people online back and forth games and all. I really wish I had playing this long ago instead of just ignoring it on the inside of my chess/checkers boards all these years.

    I sat through 45 minutes of this to give y'all the recap:
    ♦ The board is always set up as it's shown at the start of this video.
    ♦ The object is to get all your pieces off the board, in the end slot. For red that's the slot next to point 1, for black it's the slot next to point 24. (Red moves clockwise, black moves counterclockwise.) You can't put any pieces in the end slot until all 15 of your color are in the last quadrant (the last 6 points before the slot).
    ♦ On your turn (except the first turn -- we'll get to this), roll your two dice. Each die is the number of moves allowed for one piece. You can use the same piece for the moves of both dice, as long as both moves are legal (we'll get to this too). So if you roll a 6 and a 5, you can move one piece 6 and a different piece 5, or you can use one piece for both moves, totaling 11. Doubles are special: you get double the movement. So if you roll two 6s, you actually get four moves of 6 instead of just two.
    ♦ The first turn is slightly different: each player rolls one die. Whoever rolls the higher number goes first, but they must use that combined roll as their turn. So if black rolls 6 and red rolls 2, black goes first, but he must use the 6 and 2 as his first moves.
    ♦ If your opponent has at least two pieces stacked on one point, you may not land on that point. This is where movement gets a bit tricky: rolling two 5s is not the same as "rolling 10" -- you may not move one piece all 10 spaces unless it lands safely with the first 5. If you roll different numbers, say 7 and 3, and you wish to move one piece 10 spaces, you have the option of the first move being 7 or 3, whichever allows for safe movement.
    ♦ If you land on a point where the opponent has only one piece, that one piece is "captured" and placed on the middle bar. If you have a piece on the bar, you cannot move any other piece until it's off. To get it off the bar, you use one of the dice from your roll on your turn to place it back at the beginning. If you use a 1, it goes on the very first point (farthest from the end), a 2 is the next point, etc. You can use the other die like normal. If your roll doesn't allow you to move the piece off the bar to a legal spot, you lose your turn.
    ♦ When you get all 15 pieces in the last quadrant, you can start taking them off the board. To take a piece off, you must move it the exact number it requires to get in the slot. So if you have a piece on the very last point, only a roll of 1 will allow you to take that piece off. There is one BIG exception to this, and it's a bit tricky too: if your roll is bigger than any of the spaces your pieces have to cover, you may use that roll for your farthest piece. For example, if you roll a 6, but your farthest piece is only 5 spaces away, you can use the 6 to deposit that farthest piece, but not any of the closer ones. (If your farthest piece is 4 spaces away, it will also score with a roll of 6 or 5, etc.)
    ♦ Deposit all your pieces first to win.
    Hope having it written out helps someone out there.

    Backgammon isn't a bad game, though I think it gets really technical if you want to really get into it, such as the moves, the scoring, like advanced chess players. And I hate anything to do with pip counting or the doubling cube. I have the idea that the game from the first move to the last could be viewed as simply one big bearing off game.

    I'm just learning and it seems board set up is never the same. The online game apps all have it set up differently. Not a big deal I guess, but I'd like to learn the correct way if there is one (?)

    • @PuzzlingGames
      @PuzzlingGames  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      the game board is set up the same. it really just depends on what side you are sitting on, as it one way has you plating clockwise, and the other is counter clockwise. i tell beginners to ask their opponent to allow it to be set up in a way that's easiest for the beginner.

      Slowing down is one thing. Not properly structuring and editing your video is another. He began to drone on about the set up which could've been explained concisely and thoroughly if he had written a basic script and mapped out the video from start to finish. Also the use of demonstration, text, and better music would've made it much better.

  • @malcolmplace1204
    @malcolmplace1204 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    sorry but tis is not easy for me or children, how can you state one minutes a piece cant move a 5 but when you talk about doubles you say a piece can move 5 then 5 then 5 then 5 again if you want. it cant move 5 if it lands on a point with 2 counters on, so you are confusing. its either 4 x 5 or 20 moves or 10 moves which is it. must be a better teacher out here.

    • @Cat-qo3ht
      @Cat-qo3ht 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You have to think of each die separately. If while moving your piece, the fifth point lands you on a point occupied by your opponent with two or more pieces. You're thinking of it in terms of moving the total sum of ten/or twenty, but that's not how it works in Backgammon. I'm using the two 5s as the example. I think if you watched that part again you might have an "aha" moment.
