    Come on guys, you have to remember the era he grew up and learned in. My teacher was a student of his and had a similar vibrato style. Though I didn't prefer that style, it was his. That style does lean towards the violin vibrato. With the Saxophone, it's a lot more sensitive to minute changes in embouchire. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but I wouldn't let that detract from his legacy. Gosh, how many pieces do we have in our repertoire do we have because of him (written for him)?!
    I don't know about all of you, but I would hope my technique could measure up to his. Besides, I have a dream. Do any of you think there should be a Saxophone section in the standard orchestra? That was what Marcel Mule should have enabled for all of us. My inspiration in this regard comes from George Gershwin. Have a listen to the recording of Rhapsody In Blue from the original concert with the Paul Whiteman band. See if you don't agree with me about the potential that I see.
    As far as altissimo is concerned. It doesn't surprise me one bit. It wasn't the use that was thought of as wrong, it was the overuse that was. Paul Brodie (my teacher) included it as a staple of technique.

      I know it's much later now, but I really do feel saxophone wouldn't work in the orchestra. It's very difficult to blend with a saxophone. From personal experience, my band director's hand is constantly on my head in that "be quiet" way. And I'm playing as soft as I can. In reference to rhapsody in blue, that piece was jazz oriented, which enabled the saxophones to have a part. I need to do a lot more research, and gain experience as a player, but simply from the nature of the saxophone, I really feel it doesn't have a place in the orchestra.

    • @gavinm9249
      @gavinm9249 5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      your school band experience is probably not the best place to cite evidence for the saxophone being unable to blend, it’s capable of both extreme sorts and louds, and when played properly doesn’t sound reedy or harsh, but just like pure tone. The best classical saxophone sounds almost don’t even sound like a “saxophone should sound”

    • @jacobbass6226
      @jacobbass6226 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Adam Applegate the entire purpose of the saxophone was to blend with any member of the orchestra. It’s is utterly wrong to suggest otherwise. And I’m sorry you weren’t good enough of a player to blend.

      @@calesthenics_noob Unfortunately for the vast majority of saxophonists, this is true. In part because of the modern saxophonists lack of ability, and in part due to the vast changes to modern saxophones from their earlier designs. The saxophone was so brilliantly designed to blend so seamlessly with the orchestra. And it is entirely possible to do so. If you listen to the Ibert concerto as performed by Mr. Rascher or by John Kelly, or the likes you will hear a completely different approach to saxophone playing.

    @CatFlashBlue I think the saxophone is the wind instrument that has the best tone quality. Its like a violin but it has a lot more power. He's a legend of the saxophone,of course, but I wouldn't suggest you to listen to him because his vibrato is too exagerated, go listen other classical saxophonist.

  • @thisisnotdom

    @CatFlashBlue Did you just say bassoon, strings and flute beat the sax for jazz? Are you crazy?? Have you ever heard jazz before?
    The reason the sax doesn't feature very much in classical music is because it's a new instrument... Classical saxophone can sound amazing. Listen to the "fuzzy bird sonata" and tell me that doesn't sound amazing!

    @CatFlashBlue The saxophone has a lot to offer more than any other intrument including violin, clarinet, oboe, etc. It can not only be in jazz, but also in classical and other types of music. For exemple, the violin is only good at one thing, classical, but saxophone is excellent at everything. It's sad that nobody payed attention to the saxophone in its begining. And it's people like you that aren't open to anything, but their instrument that didn't make it happen.

    Are you sure this is actually Marcel Mule playing this? I was always under the impression that he hated altissimo and I hear it in both spots in this movement (as opposed to Rascher who pioneered altissimo).

    • @jacobbass6226
      @jacobbass6226 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      At 1:52 that part is supposed to be an octave up. In the other two instances the altissimo is actually easier than jumping down the octave.

    • @JustiaFiat
      @JustiaFiat 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also Raschers Altissimo was one of the best I've ever heard.. and this is really poorly executed which would fit to Mule as he disliked the usage of altissimo

    • @calesthenics_noob

      Why exactly did Mule hate altissimo? If he took a more violin like approach, shouldn't he have been really comfortable with it?

    @CatFlashBlue Ugly tone quality? Interesting.... Saxophone is the wind instrument that most closely resembles the human voice. I find it really weird that you would say something like this. I can't imagine that you're a musician if you would make a statement as ignorant as that.

  • @sglasssssss
    @sglasssssss 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    PS double checked he def hits BOTH high A's and Fs in both movements so anyone saying he did not has no ears. He took the octaves jumps. The man helped initiate the use of Saxophone altissimo soooo. Yeah. Get your sheet music and follow along.

    • @carternaughton6643
      @carternaughton6643 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Well, the piece was written in 1935 in France and jazz was growing rapidly there at the time. Ibert wrote this peace how he heard jazz, so this is jazz to him. The "being chased" is just what I think.
