For everyone asking: this is played on PCSX2. Towards the end of the video at 9:54:30 , I try playing it on actual PS2 hardware. The resolution is much lower, but has less visual issues than we see in the emulator. The latency is also a bit better but still very noticeable.
I remember playing this a lot on PSP and I have beaten it many times and it was... very unpleasant, and I didn't knew this was running on American Wasteland engine which is a surprise for me. I always wondered what happened to Aurelius. I remember downloading the THP8 OST online and Hemlock ended up becoming one of my favorite tracks in the series. I'm sure you've heard this a lot Andy, but you really knocked it out of the park with your drum tracks. Recording music is the not easiest thing to do, so I give you props for kicking ass with what you had to work with.
It really trips me out that the sound effect used for THP8's menus is also the sound used for Dalek's firing their guns in Doctor Who lol (And of course because there's like 4 menus per goal, you hear it a lot...)

Yeah this was the first game where I realized that ps2 games were going to be awful compared to their next gen parent versions. The next game to confirm this for me was Guitar Hero World Tour
The frustration around 4:55:00 is real! I loved being able to switch to walk midair to cover extra distance. Had this game for years and still haven’t played it all the way through. Honestly my first real disappointment with this series, but I feel that the decline really started with THUG 2 even though the level design and gameplay were nearly at the top of their game so to speak.

The game actually looks much better if you play on a real PS2 using component (red, green, blue) video cables as well. Every Tony Hawk's game on PS2 from American Wasteland onwards supports 480p output over component cables for a significantly cleaner image. Using component cables is also how the Xbox THPS games were able to run at 720p all the way back in 2002!
This makes me feel a lot better about my Tony Hawk skills, I’m nowhere near the level of ANDY but it’s nice to see someone who can bust out 12 million point combos with no problem struggle on the same goals I did.
I played the psp version of project 8 so much I forgot the 360 version was open world! My only experience with the fully fledged version was playing multiplayer at my friends house. I love this and thug 2 remix for filling the void when I no longer had a GameCube or ps2
I grew up with thp8 on psp. Was a good port. Pretty much the ps2 port but with classic mode. The classic mode felt off tho. The classic thps levels felt scaled up
got this version for xmas when I was a kid. Was so hyped! Had seen the trailers and the nail a trick, but didn't know that what I was seeing was only for the next gen editions. Got the game, fired it up and played it for a day, then encountered a loading bug where the wheels would just spin forever on opening screen. The game just wouldn't work anymore. Sadly returned it haha.
Oh yeah they show afterimages so you dont have to remember the position of the arrows in the back of your mind when they dissapear. Some people hate it others love it.

If you're playing THP8 or THPG on actual hardware, *SAVE TWICE* One as a main and one as a backup. Sometimes it will crash during saving and you'll lose all your progress!

It’s very painful how in the Shaba Games version how you can do manuals with the flip trick button while on the ground, but it’s also the same button used to talk to someone. That was also the case with Disney’s Extreme Skate Adventure when not using pro controls.
I remember getting this on the original Xbox and felt like "this isn't even close to the game that was advertised" (Neversoft's version) and it felt like a downgrade after THAW. Was also confused that, well open world games existed before this, so I was unsure why they couldn't make this version open world even in a kinda janky THAW way. Also that first grinding around the curb thing in Suburbia, that is one of the first apparent issues. Like the level geometry was built for the physics of Neversoft's version.

I’ve been trying and trying to figure out how they go from having everything figured out To this mess. This is the version that I played growing up and I don’t remember it being this difficult but I played the PS3 version and it’s entirely different but just as tedious. I just watched your THPS3 100% play through and that game is pretty much perfect. Five games later this is where we are. I don’t know why they have those chain objects together combo goals so specific. You have to do exactly what it says, when, in other games, simply touching, the object would usually satisfy the requirement.

I just replayed THP8 on PS2 and even completed it on 100%. In 2006, when I was 14, I actually did not notice what a downstep the ps2 version was. In europe the PS3 wasn't released at this time so I bought the ps2 version and it doesn't even feel like a complete game, just a bunch of levels with no connection and a few goals. No I watched some ps3 gameplay and think I competely missed one major part of the tony hawk series, I definitely have to replay project 8 on ps3...

Atleast the gamebreaking glitch didn't happen to you in funpark that happened to me that litterally save locks you both in the ground, and goal locks you and prevents you from exiting the level and you have to both reset the console, and start all over if you used the same save slot the entire play through. It has to do with the flags system in goal manager that for some reason disables most of the start menu and goal locks you too. Highschool has a similar glitch but it doesn't goal lock you but for what ever reason they made the item placer in funpark lock out half the menus and all the other goals if you don't meet the right conditions, and you will be stuck in a realm of both stuck in ground and not able to complete any goals while it also saves. I posted how to do it many many years ago and that video didn't survive the many mass youtube purges. I think I was one of the few people whom actually tried cataloging all the glitches in the game, no I wasn't in bgoat and no I wasn't trying to be in it. I also did the samething to the portable games, and downhill jam.

I should play this again because I don't remember it being this broken. I grew up with this version. I really didn't like the way it gives out goals. The progression is the best part of the whole game, despite the ending just being "you did it! Now get to top 1!"
As someone who grew up with ratchet and clank size matters (one of the worst games in the franchise) it's honestly just cuz you were young and had poor taste (like all kids). Going from the PS3 version of P8 to the PS2 is like drinking coke then being given watered down Pepsi with ecoli in it
having swapped from an emulator to dragging my old ps2 out of the garage (still works great!), its been SLIGHTLY better, but some weird jank with the physics still happens on native hardware, like the weird backwards jumps from the swing. i should just find the x360 version now that i have one

@Andy. Component instead of Composite makes the PS2 look a ton better. Its the HD of that era before HDMI and thats what makes progressive scan work.

I’ve found there’s a glitch in Suburbia where you can go passed the fence and you can see all the untextured houses.
The only fun I had in this game was getting to the top of the maps and bailing out.

The square button being the input is actually due to the psp port having no room for the regular manual triggering

NS developed on 360s and had a small group of guys focused on porting builds to PS3
