In the plethora of fish keeping YT channels out there, this is definitely my favorite. You guys are knowledgeable and have a down to Earth demeanor that always makes your videos a pleasure to watch. Plus you both seem care just as much about the happiness of the fish you keep as you do with the esthetics of the tank and it's visual appeal. I currently have 20 fish under my care, including tetras, danios and most of all betta's, and every one of them has their own name, personality, likes (Prexus the Danio likes to play in the sand, Helios the Betta will only rest on live plants) dislikes (Morpheus the Betta won't eat dried worms, Astraeus the Betta only likes New Life Spectrum pellets) and mean as much to me as all of my air breathing pets do. So many fish keepers on YT talk about 'oh I ordered a bag of 40 fish and 20 died en route, oh well' as if those 20 little individual souls didn't even matter, and it makes me sick. You guys though really do seem to care about the fish you keep, and that is conveyed in every video of yours that I watch.

I say 4 Discus, 4 Bolivian Rams, 4 Zebra Plecos, and 8 Otocinclus. With black sand, spider driftwood, broadleaf anubias, and frogbit floaters. With a 400w titanium aquatop heater, and a seachem Tidal 110 filter filled to the top with bio rock media and an prefilter intake sponge. I call this the 40 gallon good bye wallet. Seriously though this would all do great for a 40 gallon breeder.

@@loganleeth413 What type of parrot fish? Blood parrots? If yes then I would suggest a semi aggressive South American 120g tank. Go with Oscars, Red Devils, Green Terrors, or Midas cichlids. Another possible mate could be large plecos such as sail fins, commons, or royals as they can take and give serious damage. JUST STAY AWAY FROM CENTRAL AMERICAN CICHLIDS! They are way more aggressive then their South American and African cousins. Also no wolf/dovii it’s to big.

So I was REALLY into the hobby from ages 10 to 18, then moved for college and work, casually got back into it at around age 24, and recently started getting back into it again seriously. I was pleasantly surprised to see how much more available “nano” fish are now readily available. Many of them were always “around” (ember tetras, some of the tiny rasboras, least killis, endlers etc) but they were often only in specialty stores and/or were very expensive for what they were. My point is: I’m glad to see that there’s a much larger variety of fish that can be kept in the 5.5 and 10 gallon tanks in a decent sized school. Neon tetras are great and a staple/classic, but getting to find even smaller fish that can be in a school with more individuals in a 10er just makes the aquarium feel more like it’s a snapshot of the wild. Plus, the tiny tiny fish like exclamation point rasboras and similar could easily be kept with adult cherry shrimp without worry.

I love Lisa's idea for the 29 gal tank. I also think that if u throw in a pair of Blue Rams with some cardinals it would look spectacular. 🤩🤩🤩 I like the small tanks but I can't deny that having one big tank like a 125 or 150 with some Discus or Cichlids in it (or an Oscar), would definitely be a show stopper/conversation starter.

    • @voluntaryismistheanswer

It DID look spectacular, till the rams succumbed to being gbrs lol. I was pretty upset. Oh well, it is pretty enough still full of cardinals and corys 😄 (paleatus, false julii, pygmys are being added from quarantine today, and I'm thinking long and hard about my lone scarlet badis, whom I have given up on looking for a wife, and seems sad in a 'species' tank quite alone).

I used to keep a nano tank with pigmy rasboras in and it was probably the smallest tank I had. They were absolutely lovely to keep (as I typically kept bettas while my other half loved getting lots of different and rare fish). If you can get them they're absolutely worth it. I don't recommend them in community tanks because of how small they are as they'll easily become food for other fish.

All fish were 3-5”. 4 - eheim 2213 and a 150 gallon eheim wet dry filter. Crazy amount of water changes but it’s hard to compare the Africans to other freshwater fish. If you by inches per gallon I was double to triple that amount.

I personally don't think you should keep any fish in a 5 gal that's over 1 cm in length. Tiny shrimp are cool. Snails. Brine shrimp (if you're into that). And the daniels as mentioned earlier. I wouldn't keep neon tetras in a 5 gal even though they're small because they love to swim around, same with guppies.

    • @kinglyzard
      @kinglyzard 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Not to mention the size of the schools Neons require to feel secure. 10 or more Neons in a 5g is overload.

@@kinglyzard exactly!! It's not rocket science. And some smaller fish produce more waste than some large fish, which is why if you're gonna have a nano tank you need to know which small aquatic life is sustainable in there and doesn't produce as much waste.

I had a 150 gallon with 4 Angels, 5 Bluespotted Sunfish (North American native fish), a breeding colony of Cory Catfish, Snails, a breeding colony of Swordtail-Platy hybrids, and lone fantail goldfish for snail control. I had to do a bit of creative decoration and the Sunfish kept to their area, and the Angels to their area (mostly). Every other interaction was peaceful, except babies getting munched.

So, can you put a Betta in a 15 with a school of CPDs? (And one snail.)
The 15 in question is reportedly only 12.5 unless you do something kinda cringey to remove the rear filter compartment.

In my research, any tank or cage-based pet does better/best in the bigger sizes. Even if a 20gallon tank is suitable for a mouse or a pair, go bigger if you can manage to do so. Even if a betta can manage in a five gallon, if you can offer them a ten or twenty gallon, do so. They'll be much happier. If ya have a pet rabbit or guinea pigs, get them a nicely sized c and c cage rather then the awful tiny ones available at the chain pet stores. Use those awful tiny ones only as a bathroom or travel cage. That's about all they're good for. Conventional pet store hammy cages: toss them out! Use a large size terrarium, tank or custom make a hammy cage. (Or use small hammy cage as carrier to vet if needed or travel cage if needed but don't make them live in it 24/7!) Yeah, animals that spend their whole lives in a tank, cage, terrarium, etc should always have the biggest option you can provide for them. Sure, bare minimum is do-able but it's not the best. Would you want to live in a closet or bathroom your whole life? Or jail cell? I doubt it and that's often what these tiny options are for many animals. Researching the proper sized enclousure is always best too before getting any animal. Like with Axolotl's, I might have to out of necessity, go for a bare minimum 20 gal long initially, but I aim to eventually upgrade to a 55 gal. and then bigger again if I have the space and means to do it... that 20gal long might then be A) a grow-out tank for juvinile axolotl or B) maybe I'd convert it into a feeder fish tank and raise a community fish tank of fishes axolotl's can feed on. C) isolation or quarrantine tank for sick axies or fishes to heal or be evaluated before they go into a different tank. The possibilities are many.
Then that 55gal, if I upgrade, could either house additional axolotl's (girls tank/boys tank) or I could put it to fish of one kind or another or community tank. I would just keep aiming to provide better for whatever aquatics I have, and when one gets an upgrade, the old tank will be cleaned and re-cycled and re-purposed to whatever I wanted to have in it next. Maybe have a few gecko's or lizards or something in one of them eventually. Dunno. I'm just really into the reptiles, amphibians and fish lately since my allergies to dogs and cats are an annoyance I live with.

I love this video! Funny thing, every time either one of you put your elbows on or moved them on your desk, it sounded like the man who owns the property behind my house being vindictive again and throwing logs around in an attempt to get me out of the house. I wear headphones and nice ones at that, so I tend to hear lots of hidden sounds. I had to keep pausing your video to check my security cameras and verify that he was not trespassing again, and I would not see him anywhere. I go back to watching your video, hear the noises, and say to myself, "What is all this banging? I know I am not crazy, " although some would beg to differ. Then I realize *_it is the two of you!_* HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!

It depends if you want a Pet fish (personality based fish) or more of a nature schooling fish.
    Personality
    1. Pea Puffer x1 ( have to feed them small snails for their teeth and de parasite them)
    2. Betta
    3. Kuhli Loach
    4. Clown Killifish
    5. Pigmy Corys
    Schooling nature fish
    1. Neon Tetra
    2. Zebra danio
    3. Endlers
    4. Platys (I prefer the blue ones)
    5. (Tie) Dalmatian Mollys
    (Tie) Guppies

I think I might need a larger tank in the next year or 2. Turtles got me into it, cichlids got me in love with fish lol. Out of all of my cichlids the zebra ones are definitely the most aggressive

I have had much better experience doing 6 female betta in a 30 gallon with guppies and endlers than I did with 5 females in a 20 long. I had lots of hiding places, territories and dither fish in both tanks. Both came from established sororities too
I find 75s and 125s are great for African cichlids but I also find 125s and 150s are good for a mix of some American cichlids like Jack Dempsey, Oscar, Saum/Green Terror. A 150 is also a good size for a lone Jaguar cichlid with river rocks holding down a long piece of driftwood if you’re a minimalist. You could breed jaguars in a 150 too
My favourite mbuna mix for a 75 is an even number of yellow labs and mix color zebras like blue and red zebras like 5 yellow labs, 2 reds, 3 blues

Separate into a new tank? Or upgrade them to the next larger size or two? Sell off some (if you can)? Or offer them as food for some other fish/animals (if suitable and safe for said animals). Some of the smaller tanks I'm planning on starting would be intended for any young (at least some) to become live food for my future axolotls. I'm still in the research and planning stage though so I don't have any set up tanks yet. I'm just thinking that for the axolotls, I'd rather raise their food myself especially as I collect more of the various morphs the axolotls come in and gear up for potentially breeding lotl's. More cost effective to have tanks and bins to raise worms, shrimps, and small fish suitable as feeders for the axolotls.
