What a bountiful, beautiful stack! I am hoping someone in my family gifts me the Stephanie McCarter Ovid translation for Christmas because I really really want to read it! East of Eden is my favorite Steinbeck. The Yearling is a heart tugger. It’s beautiful and sad and maddening. I need to read Daniel D again, it has been MANY years. Emma was my favorite Austen when I was young. Now it’s moved down the line😂 Herodotus Histories is in my ‘24 list. I am always up for a reread of Jane - I love it so 🥰❣️ You’ll be hooked with Cather’s writing. Antonia is my favorite of the 3 “plains” books. I have One of Ours (her award winner) on my ‘24 list.
I really really want Emily Wilson's translation of The Iliad! ❤️ I must read Cather, Steinbeck AND The Yearling next year. It's a must! Thank you, as always, for the lovely comment, Deea!
I really, really love Daniel Deronda--pretty much as much as I love Middlemarch, honestly. And Emma is my favorite Austen, on most days, and Austen is one of my very favorite authors. And Grapes of Wrath! What an astonishingly wonderful stack, Shelly. If you choose to pick up The Makioka SIsters, I promise to join you! Personally, I think you should read My Antonia for Dec 7th 2023--Willa Cather's 150th birthday.
I'm definitely going to read My Antonia on December 7th of this year. Or at least start it on that day. I'm surprised Emma beats out Pride and Prejudice. And now I cannot wait to read Daniel Deronda. Thank you, Hannah!
Having read all Jane Austen's noveks, my favourite will always be Price and Prejudice. As for George Eliot, why not Middlemarch ? Just curious. If the Steinbeck books, my favourite ones are Grapes of Wrath and East of Eden; did not like Mice of Men one little bit. Good Luck !🙂
I can tell I've landed among my own people with videos like this. I, too, play with my books as therapy when I feel overwhelmed or upset. My processing of the war in Israel over the last few weeks has definitely involved making lists of books I need to read, looking up books to put on hold later, etc. I've also been known to completely reorganize my books when dealing with way too much crud in my personal life.
I thought I was the only person who used the phrase play with my books 😮. I should have known better. When I get upset I put a bunch of books out and read the backs of them. It also works with looking through my kindle at books I forgot I had. It makes me happy.
@@DebMcDonald I have never used the phrase, but since I can remember I would always go and spend time in front of my shelves. Even as a little kid going to the library and staring at the possibilities always made my mood soar.
That is a great list, and it’s good that you recognize that some books may drop out in favor of other classics. Because sometime next year, in your mind’s ear, you may hear the clippity clop of Don Quixote riding up on Rocinante, followed by Sancho Panza on his faithful donkey, saying, “Don’t forget about us!” 😀
I had to stop the video at 12.05 to just shout "YES!" to Far from the Madding Crowd. I read this for the first time this year, and just can't believe, at my age, I hadn't read it earlier, but, my oh my, what an absolute joy that book is.
I really loved East of Eden... it's long but it moves very fast. It's a re-telling of the book of Genesis, which I''m not super familiar with but I thought about reading that too just to draw the comparisons. My Antonia is phenomenal! It's very warm and cozy - the perfect winter read. It's a coming-of-age story and there is a line at the end that is so beautiful and heartbreaking. You'll love it.
Oh my gosh.. to be able to read East of Eden for the first time again.. ur in for a treat. You should watch the James Dean Movie after reading it! It’s just as beautiful.
Since I have only read 7 books from my list of 23 books to read in 2023, I was thinking to not bother with at 2024 list. Watching your video has convinced me to go ahead and have fun making an impossible list, and see if I can do better than I did this year.
My 2024 TBR list has 25 books less than 550 pages and the remaining 21 books are brickbooks ,as I call them, and not one of them is shorter than 772 pages; the longest over 1124 ! H...E...L...P ! 😊 Regards from GB. PS: Read all Agatha Christie books and re-read them twice more ! Mind you, I started reading them when I was 14 years old l
Your videos always bring me so much joy. I love the approach of selecting a list in the moment and still reading whatever you want when the time comes. Yes!
My Antonia is lovely. I had to read it for a summer reading assignment in high school, and put it off for a long time before finally picking it up. When I finally started it I stayed up all night to finish it, and loved it. The Forsyte Saga is really good, and I enjoyed watching the miniseries alongside reading the book. The BBC series of Daniel Deronda is also pretty good. Wneh I read longer classics I also look up images, music and other media that tie in with the book as I read. I also often find audiobooks so I can listen while doing dishes or crochet, when I want to continue the story but need a break from reading the text.
Good for you for filming in a bad mood. I have never managed it 🤷♀️ chunkiness definitely plays into the books I pick for my 1001 TBR. East of Eden is my favorite Steinbeck 😍 Daniel deronda will be on my 2024 TBR if you want to do a buddy read! I also have Herodotus and am very intimidated by it. Look forward to seeing what you end up reading.😊
You've got a great year of reading planned! I'm just planning to read more books on my shelf. 😅 The Yearling is one of them that I hope to read as well.
the other thing about mood reading, too, and not letting length trump in 'logically' picking out certain books is that sometimes reading a longer book that you really want to read takes less time than a shorter book that you're not as interested in! The Bell Jar is my favorite book!
Awww the Count didn’t make your list! 😆 I’m mentally preparing to tackle it in Q1. If I could also get to Middlemarch and House of Mirth, that would be a huge success for me. We shall see! 🤞
I love your enthusiasm for classics. So glad perusing your bookshelves helped to lighten your mood. I love shopping my shelves and getting re-excited for my own books. I love John Steinbeck books but they're always so bleak. Grapes of Wrath is great but bleak. Moby Dick has good parts and for me, very clinical history book parts which I didn't enjoy. I use my Libby app for audiobooks to help me get through some classics. I am trying to read the 100 greatest books that are listed in a book I own. One of my reading goals next year is to finish up the female authors listed, the Shakespeare options (11 of them!). The classic calling to me the most right now is Crime and Punishment. I picked up a copy of a translation that was described as one I'd enjoy the most. Good luck with your reading!
Is it bad that I love moody Shelly? 😂😂😂 East of Eden is so amazing!! One of the few books I’ve read twice 🤩 And Far From the Madding Crowd!! Yes Shelly - 24 is the year for Hardy. Do it!!!
The Christies and East of Eden are definitely page turners. My Cousin Rachel is too but I became obsessed with it and read it again and watched all the adaptations I could find so the time spent was considerable. I could read it again right now. I re-read Wuthering Heights for Victober and found that I had misremembered several things. I was less horrified, more sad, and ended with hope. Good luck 💚!
I loved East of Eden and My Ántonia last year! I want to read more Steinbeck and Cather in 2024. I’ve wanted to read The Yearling for so long! Hopefully in 2024.
24 is ambitious. Good on you . I am slow reading when it comes to classics. I will be lucky if I get 12 in, but I will try to.do 24 along with you. I'm not sure which ones I will pick yet🙈🙉🙊 P.s. you are allowed to be in a mood ...I am in one too. 💩
@@Shellyish thanks :) The only one I know for sure Is Far from the Madding Crowd. It is one of only a few Hardy's i have left. Also, I want to re read the Cairo trilogy from Naguib Mahfouz . That is a favorite of mine and have not re read it in years. The rest is up in the air for now. I think i'll set up a seperate shelf on my book shelf for the classics I want to get to in 2024. xo
p.s....please do continue on with the Anne of Green Gables series...it just keeps getting better. I only discovered the books a few years ago (and i'm in my 50s) and i adore them. I am currently reading Anne of Avonlea and am having a ball with it .
The Forsyte saga is 🤔 I want to say 4 novels in one. So you can read the first “A Man of Property” and continue if you want. I do love Far from the Madding Crowd. I’m going to have to find A Naturalist buys an old Farm! I’m a big rereader. Looks like 2024 will be a great reading year. Good luck with your 24+.
I loved Thomas Hardys ‘return of the native’ but haven’t read any others of his…enjoyed the film version of ‘far from the madding crowd’ though so might pick it up myself! I’m currently reading E M forster’s ‘a room with a view’ and love his writing style ❤ my copies of ‘Jane Eyre’ and ‘Rebecca’ are definitely due a re-read, read them both in late teens/early twenties and that was a little while ago now 😅 hope you enjoy your classics!
Here's a joke that I hope will help lighten the mood. A conspiracy theorist walked into a library, he asked "Do you have any books about paranoia?" The librarian replied "They are right behind you".
I can totally relate to the whole having expectations on a book and then the totally missing the mark thing. I do that to myself all the time. And I always have to ask myself, "Was it really a bad book? Or was it just not what I was expecting it to be." Either way, I didn't like it, but now I'll never know....😕
I'm currently reading Murder on the Orient Express! I usually attempt a book per month and fall short. Lol Teaching is tough; so how do you find time to read all those CHUNKY books?lol
I've been meaning to read more of Willa Cather's works and My Antonia is one of those. I've read another of her's and loved it, so it's one I'm looking forward to reading....maybe in 2024. I've been attracted to too many shiny new releases this year on prize longlists and I think I'd like to move away from that a bit next year.
Any pile of possibilities that includes Steinbeck and Dame Agatha is wonderful!! Oooh, I loved My Cousin Rachel. Moby Dick, not so much... Hope they are all winners for you 🙂!
Gone are the merry days when modesty meant satisfaction upon completing a novel, or a book at your own pace.
