  • Hi Guys, in this video I talk about what's going on with the Budget Automatic cars which have been going up and up for a few years now and unlike most of the sectors have not come down. We take a look at some recent auction content of cheap autos and what they are doing and I give my view on why this is happening currently in the UK and if prices will come down.

    I have drove manuals for years now got an auto and wouldn't go back to manual with all the traffic and congestion now. Its not about about being lazy they are just better in every way now just as fast and fuel efficient they have moved on leaps and bounds. I love autos have so much more concentration too.

      I switched to an auto when my left knee started to suffer from pressing a clutch pedal when commuting to and from work. My wife also started to get a sore left knee and that cleared up when she no longer had a clutch to press.

      I drive a P plate Toyota Starlet. It’s small, automatic, never gets cleaned, always passes its MOT. Was disappointed had to buy wiper blades for it last year. Only 148,000 on the clock. It’s a thirst beast mind
      I also use a an automatic A3. At 60+ would I go back to a manual, probably not, as I can’t see what advantage a manual has over an automatic. As eventually the Starlet will get stolen, and I will have to replace it. If the manual equivalent has a 20% price advantage then that might be a reason not to get another automatic.

      @johntate5050 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I disagree. After 40 years of driving manuals I craved an automatic because these days 95% of my driving is urban. I bought one and yes it was easy to drive but I quickly realised I prefer to be in control and balancing the throttle and clutch to my requirements. I kept it for 4 months before selling it and buying a manual city car which is superb. The gear change is so light it's no hindrance at all, in fact it's fun and keeps you alert. Each to their own though.

      What a lot of people don't realise though is that taking a test in an Auto makes your insurance a lot higher than if you pass your test in a manual, often 15-20% higher. That is both driving an Auto obviously and with all things being equal. I read an article from Admiral about it the other day.

    The old economic adage of supply vs demand Lee. Small auto's are always a minority of sales here in the UK ( though its expected in prestige models ) and we are all living longer so older folk want auto's that are not there so demand is up but supply remains static.
    In laws have a 16 plate i10 auto that the mother in law crashed. Everyone - including the insurers approved repairers - were asking would they sell rather than get it repaired. I advised not because whatever they took for it would not buy them a replacement outright now they are both retired. The trade were desperate to snag it because frankly it wasn't a difficult repair and wasn't written off so would not be a Cat car. They got it repaired.

    Lee, about the autos - back of the net there mate. I lived in SE-Asia from 2004 to 2013 and the take-up of automatic cars & pickups there was astounding as the Tiger economies recovered from the 1999 Asia crisis and car buying became a must. even trusty 100-125cc class scooters went from being mostly stepped manuals (a foot operated manual gear change with an automatic clutch) to fully automatic twist-and-go.
    much easier to pass an auto test but thats about it. cost of ownership is nasty and although not in all cases, fuel consumption is not so good.
    interesting to see your watermarking on the auction parts of the video. I'm guessing the cloners have been taking advantage...

    Lots of people are not bothering to do their tests in Manuals these days. New drivers with auto licences will fuel the demand for cheaper Autos. Wife prefers to drive automatic so we had my father's Nissan Note 1.6 Tekna auto which was OK to drive but poor quality as a car. I thought about a Ford S-Max but that's Powershift so no way I was going to own that gearbox. Bought a VW Tiguan auto because it is 6-speed torque convertor auto and not VW DSG which can create huge bills if they fail. Didn't much like the Tiguan so got what I really fancied which is Jaguar X-Type Sovereign 2.2 auto which is such an excellent car. Auto 'box is also in all Volvo Geartronics, most Peugeot automatics and lots of Suzukis so I would recommend thinking about those. Main thing with auto's: knock them into neutral if you're stationary in traffic for more than a few seconds. Have the fluid changed and serviced if it's possible to do it. Avoid Ford Powershift at all costs.

Great car, but I had to suffer the jibes about typical demographic haha. Been DCT since, which I prefer. Even had experience of an Up! auto in the family with its automated manual - a bit quirky and could be jerky tbh, I liked it, others not so keen, so little power, but a nice engine. Showing my age here but when I started driving most autos were 3 or 4 speed. Their performance and fuel economy was terrible and the people that drove them were either old, disabled or couldn't pass a manual driving test. I now own a DCT that shifts faster than I can blink and offers better economy than a manual so it's no wonder people don't want to shift cogs by themselves any more.

    I'm glad you shared your thoughts on why small automatics are so popular as I have never understood it. I always thought that small cars should have a manual box with a nice light clutch and automatic boxes are better suited to big lazy cruisers. Maybe however I'm remembering Metro 1.0s with the AP 3 speed auto box. 30mph and that's you in top already😅 I have 2 autos, a petrol Saab 93 and diesel Rover 75. They are lovely and relaxing to drive but I think large autos are never going to be as popular due to the relatively high road tax and higher fuel consumption.
    So I guess I'm happy to leave the small autos to those that need or want one!

    Small Auto's with low mileage have "always" been scarce and made seriously good money, more so if japanese, korean, VW polo etc, throw in some high spec and you'll pay over book ..... they just do😢, nothing unusual here, except more than just elderly drivers looking for them now as young drivers also enter the fray 😮

    If you're buying a £40,000 car then overpaying by 10% or 15% - £4,000 to £6,000 - is a biggish deal. But adding that to a £1,500 car - £150 - especially if you're a private buyer or you're a trader with a buyer in their pocket, it really doesn't matter in the great scheme of things.

    I’m a dyed in the wool manual driver but spent several years in north London and eventually went automatic because of the constant queues. If I found myself doing that kind of driving again I’d reluctantly go for an auto.
    Trouble is these days, you’re just as likely to be queuing on a motorway.

    I’m not surprised. Generations getting older who don’t have the dexterity for using a clutch and gearbox. Traffic has gotten worse, more traffic jams. I moved away from a manual to a auto due to getting fed up with doing the left leg workout 😉 Plus if you buy a car such as a VW group etc.. They come with Auto as standard to cope with power delivery. Only manual I have is in a pure top down where autos don’t work well.

    You do not have a FULL UK driving licence if you don't pass in a manual. Most jobs that require some sort of driving will only be open to those with a FULL licence. Otherwise it's handy for hiring vans etc but of little use. I've switched to automatic but I could jump into a manual if I needed to.

    • @gravemind6536
      @gravemind6536 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I can jump in any vehicle except a motorbike. Anything from a smart car to an articulated lorry or bus with trailer. I love hiring cars or getting courtesy cars always get a look and then questions when they see the back of my license filled up.

      An auto licence is still a full driving licence, it just excluded manuals. there's a shortage of drivers for driving jobs. it wouldn't be wise for a company to buy manual vans or trucks. When some people can't drive them or don't want to drive them

    Most premium cars tend to auto only, with said cars you usually have 8 gears, in some cars 10 speed, so would you want a manual anyway, Mercedes for example as a brand that do list manual gearboxs but as most people know Mercedes manual gearboxs are crap,plus there are certain premium model cars that don't even list a manual because it would effect the resale value, I drive a Volvo XC90 and a manual gearbox would be unthinkable, so Auto the onlw ahead, as for small auto cars, such as shown in the video clips tend to be gutless, most being CVT which are truly awful, unreliable & mega expensive when they go wrong, as ever a great video, I do like to see the auction reviews, are very interesting. 👍

    During Covid our daughter gave birth to twins and decided to start taking driving lessons at the age of 52 when the first lockdown ended,thinking everything would be back to normal lol. I started to learn to drive in a manual,had a total of 38 hours at £26 per hour but unknown to me on my lessons the instructor was pressing the clutch down when he thought I was going to stall (I had no previous lessons full stop) on my test I couldn’t even start the car (not fully engaging the clutch) I eventually stalled in the middle of a busy junction (being beeped at is an understatement) the examiner said I’d be best suited to an automatic and after taking a couple of days to think about it I decided on auto lessons. In total I had 11 lessons in an automatic A class over a period of three months and passed. But I’m actually back in a manual instructor car again at the age of 56 and my test is at the end of March (I must be a glutton for punishment) My first car and still own is a 2003 Honda CRV MK2 2.0i petrol Auto and I’ve covered over 20k miles in just under 2 years and love it.

Am I crazy or something but no with traffic 5pm slow gear shiftings just a nightmare on roads around my way plus the big tyre non low profile stuff helps in pot holed roads. Nice to hear your thinking on why you don’t buy this and and make a quick £1000.

    My girlfriend was a late learner driver started in a manual but soon realised an auto would be better and quicker to pass her test, especially taking into account the cost of driving lessons etc. bought a 10 plate Citroen C4 hatch that was tidy and 70k miles for £1950 but was not convinced if it would be reliable and sold it for what we paid. A few months of looking and paid top money for a 12 plate Auris 1.6 auto but it seems a good car. Probably holding it's money better than my A5!

    Hyundai coupe was my solution for a cheap automatic(find one from a grand), I know it's not really classed as small but insurance is cheap for us it's £260 ISH but we're 50 something, our other car is Dacia Sandero(not auto) the only factory LPG so saves on fuel, both cars good budget motoring examples
