Sierra & Billy you guys are true professionals. It really makes me happy to watch the two of you working on a boat, any boat, only because you really get stuff done. Projects like you just completed in 8 months would take most couples years to do. Now, when is that catamaran going to be ready? Any idea when you'll pick it up and where you'll take delivery and commission the boat?

Alameda! I recently lived there! Make a trip to “scolaris” on “Park street” awesome burgers and chicken sandwiches. Also there is a great breakfast spot “Mosley’s” on the canal. Last there is a huge kiteboarding presence at Robert crown beach/park on the west side of alameda! Enjoy!

You two did a great job fixing up that boat. I do get the marina wanting photos of a boat that is older as they do get so many sort of homeless people who are just going to be a big hassle to get rid of . Now that your boat is all fixed up looking at least I do not think any marina is going to turn you down if they have an open spot for your boat now . I hope to see you sailing the world on your new boat soon but I would sure like to see a few little clips of whoever buys that boat going around doing whatever they plan on doing with her

    Going north in winter?
Beware Crab Traps along the coasts this time of year.
Glad you returned to trawler life.
Although I appreciated my Grand Banks, the hype them being the " Gold Standard" in trawler yachts just does not hold water. Your boat I believe is more then on par. More preferable to seasoned boaters.
My largest boat, a wooden 1942 built Ed Monk 50ft ( Kept in Olympia Wa) was very capable although not a trawler was my main boat until I downsized to the GB.

Fun to see you guys in our home turf. Curious what you think about radar now that you have cruised the left coast? We upgraded our NT42 with a new 12kw open array from Ray Marine. Along with AIS and Axiom12 displays. To be fair, I can get most places we go with an iPhone. But iPhones are prone to annoying "updates" that just shut everything down until you take care of them. iPhones are difficult to use when it gets rough. Boat Beacon needs a cell signal. AND we are old. If it gets dark, or foggy, or cruddy weather comes in, having good dedicated equipment is really nice. When I was sailing in the 80's I relied heavily on my eyes and ears and a depth finder. Not really adequate for the kind of voyage you guys just made. So? Opinion on radar now??

It just struck me: should I flip my life, find a worn-down wooden boat, move to Napa Valley Marina and embark on a not-so-not impossible mission? Or how can I bear the void after so many yrs with first the Salt & Tar's, then the Basic's, then the Tula's and lastly the Alluring's in that cool and invigorating yard?

Excellent! Stoked y’all found a little spot. I’m in Berkeley and had so much trouble when I first came in with my trawler. I have Catalina 38 now and can go anywhere but it’s tough to get a spot unless your part of a yacht club which I am here in Berkeley and it’s awesome/I’m able to sail to any yacht club dock and stay. I love the yacht club. Y’all could get a membership at your local yacht club or in Berkeley or somewhere around here for cheap and then you can go to different yacht clubs and stay on the dock pretty much as long as you want for free pretty much all up and down the coast. So stoked for y’all though. Epic and I’m pretty sure I seen y’all out there (I was out there on my buddies catalina 38 around that time).

  • @scottwiesemann4876
    @scottwiesemann4876 ปีที่แล้ว

I hope you guys have researched cruising the west coast. You will be going uphill against the California Current and the prevailing winds. A rule of thumb that many use is any winds over 15 knots and wave intervals of less then 10 seconds is a no go unless you like roller coasters. The closer to shore the higher the swells.
Some folks travel farther offshore and at night the wind dies down, the swells are lower, and no crab pots. The downside of this approach is when it’s time for fuel you turn and the swells are on your port side for a couple of hours of rock and roll.
Speaking of fuel stops. they are few and far between. And most require a bar crossing. It would be a good idea to have paper charts for the harbors. Don’t forget to check the Notice to Mariners. I hope you get a good radar you will be close to shipping lanes and depending on the time of year plenty of coastal fog at all those bar crossings.
When you depart the SF Bay hug the north side of the golden gate. You have more wind protection. Try to get under the bridge during slack tide after you pass under the bridge you’ll be going over the bar which can get nasty on an ebb tide.
Good luck and enjoy the ride!

It might be a good idea to add some catalyst to the diesel fuel to help oxidize any carbon glaze build up on cylinder walls and heads--a good hard run over a few hours will see big improvements in compression and economy and a lot less diesel fumes and blow by.
I also made up a lip of PVC to catch the drips from the propeller shaft seal and deposit them into a plastic storage box, in which sat a bilge pump and a float switch with the pump outflow directed overboard with the outlet well above waterline and a siphon breaker. I am a huge fan of dry bilges. Shaft stuffing boxes need to drip one a second minimum..

A few years ago, I bought a complete marine electronics package that was only a couple old. The guy I bought them from upgraded all the electronics on his 3 year old boat. The shop that did the work cut up most of the cables removing them and they did not comes with them and the manufacturer was nuts when it came to the prices of the ones they did have in stock. I ended up ordering all of the connectors and making the cables myself, which cost me under $200. I found the diagrams to make them in all of the manuals.

If you're coming northwest you will wish you have a working radar unit. The fog going up the coast from the bay area north to Washington and the straits inland to the Puget Sound you will be running into foggy and rough sea conditions not to be taken lightly. Good luck on your passage north.

I really enjoy seeing you two work together so well. You try to do everything correct.
I did see something that concerns me though. When you wired up your three batteries you allowed the negative cable to lay heavily on the positive cables. I would hate to see a dead short occur if the insulation becomes thin as the cables heat up . I figured when you put the positive cables on you would be looping the negative the other way and was concerned right away.
Keep up the great work on your "Master Piece"

been following you since the real early days. great to see this trawler going! havnt watched in a while, but this popped up. west coast, near and off shore, is a completely different animal. I am sure you have looked into it, but you cannot just hug the coast on the way up. shelter can be far between, and unavailable in storms. I would recomend the radar and all devices working. And when you come into any rivers and if you make it up to puget sound/san juan/gulf islands, you need to post watch for floating and dead head logs. this doesnt exist in the waters you have sailed, same with the hypothermia. looking forward to following the journey up the coast!
