    I didn't watch the video yet, but the answer is yes. Yes we can.
    Humanity can achieve anything. Don't get cynical, stay realistic, and be optimistic.

      Natural changes may occur but wouldn't be on this scale without releasing all methane in the see floor... one of the tings predicted to occur if we keep compounding, what I believe is a problem.
      Since we can and do terraform it's quite pointless to decide whether we should, I say keeping weather in a comfortable range will avoid one of the worst possible scenarios.
      PS. I was thinking back to the industrial revolution, that happened no 2 centuries ago and assuming 25+ years per generation and most of the globe taking time to industrialise that's how much effort I see, has been put towards carbon realise.

    I work from home, which means very little commuting for work except for rare occasions. I also live within walking distance (long walk) of several convenience stores. I can go several weeks without a car. In general, I think more walkable neighborhoods would go a long way towards reducing greenhouse gases not to mention aggravating commuting times, as well.

    As much as people think the Ozone degrading propellants and refrigerants are phased out, there still developing countries that have huge number of legacy refrigeration equipment that represent a market for those who still produce those chemicals, also the uncontrolled disposal of out of commission compresors causing their content to be released outside the atmosphere, even here in the USA how many people care about calling the 311 number to have them send technicians remove the compresor before final disposal?

    As someone who covers news and gives political commentary on my channel its always good to get the perspective of actual climate scientist. that said i don't think this was a great speech. We are way beyond the point of trying to give simplified explanations on the history of climate change. Scientist continue to publish dire reports warning that if we don't get to 0 emissions in 10 years we'll pass the tipping point and the most cataclysmic events will become inevitable. We need to be talking about serious solutions and raise awareness that there's a real possibility that we're going to wipe out all life on the planet not wasting informative talks giving grade school analysis on the history of climate change

    • @gasdive
      @gasdive 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes.
      Ozone/CFC isn't a great comparison. Once you stop producing ozone depleting chemicals, there are no more ozone depleting chemicals being emitted. That's in stark contrast to CO2 where human emissions stimulate natural emissions.

    • @Unapologetic
      @Unapologetic 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @Awakened2Truth - Disciple of Jesus the Christ the premise of your whole argument is that CO2 is useful so there's no way it can possible be bad. water is useful. it is responsible for literally all life on the planet. if every inch of the planet was under water that would be very bad. most things on the planet would die. Your juvenile ignorant argument has been debunked

      @Awakened2Truth - Disciple of Jesus the Christ I'm conservative. I also agree that a lot more research needs to be done on this issue. Especially since people are so one-sided about it. However, before you start calling yourself an intellectual, or anything like that, you should stop telling people that they are horrible people to convince them that you're right. You should also stop talking about red herrings like socialism and leftism, which have absolutely nothing to do with climate change. Even though I agree that more research needs to be done before jumping to conclusions, I also agree that your understanding of how the carbon cycle works isn't completely accurate. Just stop making this issue so black-and-white. It doesn't help. Listen to the opinions of others, and try to understand them, even when you don't agree. If you can't do that, there's no point in having a discussion, and there's no way you'll be able to find the truth of the matter.

      Maryssa Bizier i agree with you, although with climate change i still need to educate myself more with, but still human wastes cause animals wash up in the shore, i have personally have seen this when i was very young. There was so much waste on shore in my field trip that my classmates and i didnt even get 1/10 done but i managed to get shotgun shells plus fish nets and other materials off. Point is human activity affecting us and wildlife as well as other aspects of the planet i feel like its our responsibility to do something about it. Earth is mother to us all and we wouldn’t have the machines we have in our hands if it wasn’t because of it. Hey we dump trash in our home its our responsibility to pick it up

    All people's actions are on their own head. All of us can do something for protecting of our planet. For example, economy of fuel due to travelling by public transport instead of cars or maybe reduction of deforestation can help us to save our environment. Also we can more rarely use spray cans which damage ozone layer. You can save electricity by turning off all electrical items when you don't need them and perhaps humanity will use more alternative energy in near future. Using sunlight and wind power won't change our usual types of getting energy but can significantly reduce damage.

      if you say this, it shows that you know absolutely nothing about how the greenhouse effect works ...
      when you burn fossil fuels, you put carbon trapped in the ground for millions of years in the atmosphere and these gases cause less energy from the sun to be radiated to space, its the sun doing the work we are just puting extra blankets to trap the heat

  • @DavidSanchez-vx4bv
    @DavidSanchez-vx4bv 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    The problem is that risk and imminent risk are not the same. When was discovered that the Ozone Layer lost 3rd of itself well, was clear the rapid change and the imminent risk was perceived as real. The second problem is that the Solution was in the Industry that made CFCs NOT all the Humanity, Business, Civic Groups, etc. If someone can create, let's say a combustible equivalent to the gasoline/coal/oil that doesn't release CO2 and has the same average price ofthose, you can be sure the complete World will adapt it, with not problem.. But not, what has been asked is that we pay a "carbon Tax", reduce our consume, modify our behavior, buy things "greener" but expensive cars/trucks/tools.. etc.
    Also, what is being asked for several countries as India and China, that they stop or at least slow their development, due that the West countries burned for 150 years coal and there is a lot of CO2 in the atmosphere, the developing countries can NOT do the same.. what a peaty you were after those other countries...
    As you can see, the challenge is much more complex that just replace some substances for others, as happened with the CFCs...

    Good talk and good analogy. But it does break down on two main points. Cutting CFCs out of our lives was VERY easy compared to the prospect of cutting out fossil fuels. CFCs were much less critical to our lifestyle. They also posed a more clear and present danger to human beings. Keep using them and people *will* die a painful death from skin cancer. With climate change, in the minds of many people, the costs are much higher in making a change and the dangers seem less clear and, for human beings, anyway, less urgent.

      @neverlostforwords 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Everyone should commit to supporting a tree - that is, keeping it alive. All you have to do is spread a 3 or 4 inch layer of wood chips / bush mulch around the trunk all the way up to the canopy line (where the branches end) once every six months. The timber contains water and that will help water the soil and roots beneath. Worms and fungi break down the wood chips gradually, providing nutrients to the soil and roots. Leaves fall and break down as well, providing minerals to soil and roots. If there is no rain, sprinkle a bottle or two of water (tap water will do if that is all you have) over your chosen tree's mulch once a week or once a month if you don't have enough time. The water will be better than nothing. The wood chips will protect the tree roots from exposure to nasty chemicals from various sources of pollution. They will also prevent evaporation from the soil. Twice a year you can also sprinkle on the mulch a container of organic native fertiliser pellets (see Australian product "Bush Tucker" online to see something generally applicable to all trees then find the equivalent in your area).

    Like this so that everyone sees this. I have an Idea for a Magnet Motor that works with magnets and superconductors nothing else ,It wouldn’t spin forever (so its not a perpetual motion machine) because magnets loose its power after like 300-400 years ,if this would work we could built a lot of these magnet motors to produce enough energy and destroy all coal-fire-stations so we have 0 emissions : )
    The only problem is that I don’t know if this could actually work and I can’t Build it to Test it because I don’t have enough time... :/

    He's right but the comparison with ozone is wrong on the most essential point: fossil fuels still create huge revenues and are supported by enormous lobbies. The products destroying the ozone weren't as much.
    Some countries would even lose more than 80% of their economy by stopping extraction and burning of fossil fuels.
    Not all people want a change (see in France where a small tax increase on petrol created 3 months of weekly strikes and riots so far... as of today). For most people, the end of the month is more important than an increase in freak storms, global warming or pollution which effects are not immediately seen. More people that you'd think do not care at all about future generations and you'd be surprised to see many of these people being parents.
    Conclusion: with most people not wanting a change and the wealthiest companies and lobbies blocking everything, don't expect a change anytime soon!

    Carbon dioxide is a trace gas present at 430 ppm in our atmosphere. It consists of a carbon atom and two oxygen atoms ... hence it is called carbon dioxide. It is not called carbon by anyone who knows even a bit about science. Carbon Dioxide is a greenhouse gas. It absorbs longwave radiation at 2.3, 4.7, and 15 micrometers. Carbon Dioxide has a slow emissivity ... it doesn't have time to radiate energy and instead it gives off heat when it expands according to the gas law and collides, transferring heat by convection, with millions of oxygen and nitrogen molecules. The earth radiates heat across the entire longwave radiation spectrum ... the amount of energy available at Carbon Dioxide's absorption spectrum is limited. The effect of CO2 as a greenhouse gas is logarithmic; its going to cause most of the warming at lower concentrations and not so much at higher concentrations. Some studies suggest the greenhouse gas effect is close to saturation ... so if you double (860 ppm) or even triple (1290 ppm) the amount of carbon dioxide you won't get much more warming effect. The best estimate of warming by increased Carbon Dioxide thought to have originated from human activity amounts to about 1.7 watts per meter squared ... or about 1% of the energy radiated by the earth in any given quantum of time. This is just one of many different atmospheric processes that affect the heat budget. There is no way to determine how much if any of the recent modest warming (0,8C since 1880) can be attributed to rising levels of CO2.
    Climate Change is a natural cycle driven by the sun and moderated by ocean currents. There is nothing you can do about climate change except to adapt.

    We MUST elect politicians that will act to fix this crisis. We can accept nothing less. Climate action must be the defining issue of our day. It will require fundamental change, far larger than any group of individuals can enact (although individuals need to act also). We need governments to force the necessary changes onto the companies that are the root of the cause. As AOC recently said climate delayers are the new climate deniers . We have no time left to delay.

    One thing that bothers me about this whole issue is that the major environmental problem facing the world in the long run clearly is overpopulation. Yeah that's a third rail nobody will touch due to politically correct reasons.
    What needs to be done immediately is to establish a maximum population density per square mile or per square kilometer and to tax every country that exceeds it to the extent it exceeds it until they reduce their population density level to a reasonable sustainable level.

      Also moving funding from unnecessary things (at lest in the US case - about 1/2 the military budget) to education, science, and infrastructure .

    • @lasarith2
      @lasarith2 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tespri which is exactly why I said (begin ) and small incremental percentages over time, of years, not in one giant go - but a minimum limit of (%) must be reached by a certain timeframe, ((Example - ( you ) must save 2-3% on there next years electric bill, - that’s not a lot over an entire year, ))
      remember this is for multi million/billion Dollar companies, and smaller ones get help from government to reach it, while it would only effect (wherever) this is where the likes of NATO and such would have to come into play to try and help the less fortunate countries into reaching certain goals (again not instantly but again 1-2% should not be hard over say 2 years or some (other workable number )
