I recall Rapso which was conscious Calypso or Soca. Bob Marley did it with reggae, a message over major chords eg Talkin Blues. From what I've heard Marley was influenced by the message In Calypso when he was starting out. It can be done in Soca but it's the balance.
Big up Kes the band-it's really cool to hear the production level in their music.

Stop only focusing on the Soca music that deal with Carnival and party themes. Listen to some Blaxx.. Remove yourself and Hulk Bunji Garlin... Vampire. Freetown Collective Music. Voice. Ras Shorty I, the man who created the thing.... Who God bless. David Rudder have a huge set of conscious social and political commentary check it out. It has already been done but more artiste need to get on board

@@shotteebwoi1O2 Shadow. Poverty is hell.. Explainer... Heros . And the list is endless. What happened is some of the leading Soca Artiste especially those attached to bands focused more on the party scene like Machel Montano.
Their repertoire would of mainly been wine and jam, jump and wave. So that type of Soca brand became more popular over the years because of the Money it generated. But that crap, truly does not define what Soca is. And many of the new Soca Artiste just like the new dance hall Artiste don't know the history. They just in the now moment. They were not properly schooled in the Artforms but they have a voice. Sadly because of their lack of knowledge they mislead many.
Now Machel is a Yogi he is talking conscious. We will see what he brings in the future.

Ravi B did one of the very 1st collabs with Jahllano, Rum in Meh Veins. I really don't think there was anyone else at that time, that was in 2021. Please correct me if I am wrong. We were still in some C0v!& restrictions, and the song's lyrics were about things we love, rum, love and having a good time. Normal lyrics for soca and soca chutney. I personally like the collabs. But there is a stigma attached to the Trinibad genre because of its origins and the background of the artists. Life creates life so it is inevitable that we will experience the emergence of such a genre. The collabs this 2025 are fire! Hot! Yeah and interestingly they have a slower groovy pace, which we all know is a fave for Soca lovers and fete goers. Ofc we will have the Power Soca collabs too. Looking forward to it. Love from T&T!

Its sad that the interviewers didn't do their history on Soca and even Calypso , when Reggae and dancehall artists go to Trinidad our interviewers are well informed and researched about the genre, and they don't go off the present day hype, the conversations are usually depth and wholesome. I hope you guys bring Kes and more soca artists back and do the research before having conversations, and not be biased or judgemental ..We are One Caribbean , without Calypso there would be no Reggae!

There was a time in Panamanian history when Calypso was popular music. There were panamanian Calypsonians at a competitive level. During the late 70's and 80's Calypso and Reggae was prohibited on the radio and in the nightclubs, ee could not even sing in english, and i know that the world doesn't know about this, but Panamanian young musicians started singing Calypso and Reggae in spanish. That's how spanish Reggae was born. Please don't talk to me about Reggaeton because i am panamanian, not puertorican.
