I am glad you acknowledged James McCaffrey's work in this game. Such an underrated actor. Despite the fact that I love this game, I really liked this review and the detail you went into. Great Work!
Man, I just have to say that your reviews are fantastic. Where as most journalists and reviewers are little more than payed advertisement now of days who simply talk about what they did in a game or how it offended them, you actually talk about the game itself, its development, the teams that worked on it, the history of the franchise, the ports, everything. It's what other people who do these reviews should strive for. I'm getting more than just an opinion, but somebody who has taken the time and effort to understand what he is talking about. Anyways, looking forward to watching more of your videos!
I missed your reviews! Hadn't seen one in a while, was awesome to not only see a new review from you, but on this game specifically! Thanks for another great review, I love them when they're on the longer side, so this was perfect!
Thank you :D for a wile I'll be working on shorter reviews as they take less time to make, but it wont be long before another series catches my eye to review ;)
as always, very nice job michael, bet that was a relief closing the book on this series for now! congrats on the finale, well done. looking forward to more :)
Playnation Games I know this comment is old, but do you mind selling me a copy on the Ps3? I actually like this game and can't find one near me for some odd reason. :P
The epic finale of the Alone in the Dark Review saga, ;). It was really good man. It seems like a sad ending for a series that started so well and inspired a whole genre. As usual it was a very thorough and fun review to watch. This was really worth the wait man! :)
Thank you shawn :D It was a shame to end this series on a sad ending, but maybe the story isn't finished yet? Again thank you for watching and i'm glad you enjoyed this video :)
One can always hope. I f nothing else Im sure there will be spiritual successors to carry on the torch. It really depends who will keep the rights to the IP and what they will do with it.
Great review like usual~was nice you covered all the ports as well so you had more input to offer then say the review by Pro Jared (which most people may be familiar with)
i think pro jared did a solid review on just the game it's self and nothing else. but i felt not including this games, or the series history is like telling half a story.
Really enjoyed that sir, as always. It's a crying shame about this one as I really enjoyed New Nightmare following your last review. Here's hoping you enjoy the next game series you tackle. Perhaps Parasite Eve??
Another good review! I never played this game(or any of the other AitD games for that matter) but I guess I dodged a bullet there. It's both funny and sad how a company would lash out when gaming journalism sites give their game bad reviews. It just makes things worst on their behalf. If they don't want their product to receive bad reviews, then don't make a bad game! Simple as that, hehe!
you are spot on ;) if you don't want a bad review then don't make a bad game, it's the reason why company's try to make good games to avoid bad press. attacking the press is a quick way to lose all goodwill, or in Atari's case bankruptcy lol Thank You :D
as they say each to there own ;) i think it's great some people dig this game, but i find it strange that most people hate it with a passion :S i think the game's biggest fault is it gives a bad first impression that's hard to over come.
What I like in this game: James McCaffrey as Edward Carnby The music The concept The monsters References of the original games What I dislike about this game: The character development Most of the characters Edward’s constant swearing, as that’s out of character from his original appearances. And needlessly harsh. Graphical glitches and gameplay issues The endings Not being able to state it’s a reboot, a continuation or both. And also... That F@%KING CAR CHASE!
Good job on the review, I for one however wouldn't mind a few more newish game/series reviews like Legacy of Kain or Deus Ex but do what you want and enjoy ofcourse.
Well, now I need to do some sort of review of this game from a different perspective since I truly enjoyed that game and played through it several times.
the remake was so over the top that i wounder, who was Eden games making it for? at least with the lo key remake it would of done better with a smaller more specific audience :) Thank you
The ps2 version had a lot of small little details that were removed in the ps3 version. It felt more "real" with checking your ammo by looking at the clip, the aiming didnt had that laser pointer and the car searching sequences felt more detailed ;)
To some degree I feel like Alan Wake became what this game was intended to be as the two ended being fairly similar in style. In a way I consider Alan Wake a spiritual successor to Alone in the Dark even if it wasn't.
Love the review mike. Tbh i kinda felt the same at first. The mechanics were awkward and took time to break in which is probably what threw a ot of people away, especially the driving segments. Oh god the driving segments. But other than that i thought the game play was pretty damn solid. I didnt get the whole first person perspective at all they could have easily done a 3rd person shooting mechanic easily. But the story, the locations, the art design and soundtrack were spot on in my opinion a greatly under rated game. Just had a few issues that needed ironing out. A few more months of tweaking and this would have been a great commercially
Thank you, also thanks for your input about this games story. I am glad there are people out there who like this game, as it would of been a shame if everyone hated it.
Did you but the base version of the game? Because my version came with the "IN THE" DLC already installed. You should download it and give Alone IN THE dark" another go.
Hey Michael! First of all: great video, as always! Love your videos in general! Have you heard that there is a new instalment in the series available? It's called "Alone in the Dark: Illumination" and it's basically a ripoff of the "Left 4 Dead" series. Mostly focussing on multiplayer, but also playable solo. Still... I'm somewhat puzzled why they've called it "Alone in the Dark" at all, seeing how it's got seemingly nothing to do with the franchise at all anymore...
OH God, those driving sections were horrific, I did the first one after that main building..so difficult! As for the skipping of the game, I only skipped the last part where you have to burn down all those trees with the force fields around them, such BS and padding.
Great review, I hope they do make a sequel, or a spiritual successor at least. Have you considered reviewing a game called Call of Cthulhu - Prisoner of Ice?
I picked up Alone in the dark: The new nightmare as a used game for PS 1 and loved it. Its open world gameplay, puzzles, atmosphere and especially the music were awesome to me. So, I got AITD 1 on Steam and found it interesting. 2 not so much, so when this last entry came out, I excitedly purchased it..and was soundly disappointed. The car sequences are srrictly on rails and confusing, the ending was odd, and my guy getting sucked into the ground was annoying and idiotic. I wish Darkworks had kept doing more entries in this series because Atari killed it. I hope someone tries a re boot again, it could be a great series once again I feel.
this review was pretty damn perfect and on point in every way... you did forget to ad that the healing feature in the game was a but of a mess.... ambitious but a mess... you ended up looking like you had lumps of bacon stuck to you outfit lol
you are spot on i did forget to mention that. i always meant to talk about that but kept forgetting to. i don't think the flesh cover thingy was too bad on the ps3 version :D
Michael's Retro Game Reviews I never did get to play the ps3 version... i have the 360 version, i got it when it came out.... i got to the part in the park where you have to keep burning all the plants..... i turned it off at the point and never went back to it.... it was just so boring.... but some of the graphics were pretty great.... but as the old saying goes, good graphics don't make a good game...
Gasoline bullets? I liked the phosphorous bullets of New Nightmare better. Who wouldn't want a triple barreled shotgun that could literally 'light up' a target. And what about that flashlight in NN? You see that sort of thing a lot now but at the time that was pretty rad. I wonder why they couldn't continue the New Nightmare story. Still, Inferno had some neat ideas. I think AitD's biggest downfall is the abandonment of the horror element. I never played Inferno, but it just dose not look at all scary. But since I have not played it I could be wrong. I'd like to see a full reboot starting with a remake of the original. Let's hope a miracle happens.
i find it fine that you reviewed the modern version of this game, But man if there is anything to take away from this its that Atari just keeps going further down hill ever since nolan bushnell left
I agree that the story was a bit of a mess... but the game itself was really fun. I liked that it was trying something different with the inventory and the fire physics. The puzzles were fun.
my biggest problem with the story was why did they release the devil? and what did anyone hope to gain by ending the world? at worse he was just a nuisance for humanity stuck inside edward.
Why!? Why didn't they continue the remake!? It would be perfect! It's exactly what I planned for Alone in the Dark! Start the saga all over again, put it back in the 20's or 30's, make a good job in marketing, and lower the prices on other Alone in the Darks!
cancelling the remake was such a mistake :( compared to the 2008 game it wouldn't of cost much to make, and would of been a great way to test the waters before trying something as big as this game. but yes!, having this series start over would of been a great idea :)
I really want to like this game. It's has some good things going on, though non of them are fully flushed out. I think someone should give it a try again. But don't try to "remake" it.
Yes, me to. Some scenes had been designed absolutly phantastic but the fights are a player´s nightmare. Regrettebly not a point for but against the title. Yes the way car driving had been designed was as bad as in MASS EFECT 1
A few days ago, Atari announced a reboot of Alone in the Dark, so there will be more! (Hopefully better than the last game...I bought the Wii version, as a fan of the older titles, and it's THE worst game I have ever played in my whole life)
i wouldn't say it's unfinished, but more based on an older build game of the game. i suspect this game was meant to come out in 2007, but went they decided to overhaul the game (360 &pc) they just released the ps2 and wii ports that were complete the year before, we well as the revamped xbox and pc versions.

I wonder if Michael will resurface for the Alone in the Dark remake?
I am glad you acknowledged James McCaffrey's work in this game. Such an underrated actor.
Despite the fact that I love this game, I really liked this review and the detail you went into. Great Work!
me to I like this game & love the review
The same way Viper was an underated tv show.
Would love to hear a review on the new 2024 game. I personally really enjoyed it.
You missed the train wreck "Alone In The Dark: Illumination"...the real last game of the series. X_x
Your videos are really detailed, well produced and well researched. Pity they come out every 6 years (it feels!).
True and now no more videos unfortunately
I feel like I've been waiting my entire life for this.
Brilliant job, absolutely loved the video
Thank you so much :D

Playnation Games I know this comment is old, but do you mind selling me a copy on the Ps3? I actually like this game and can't find one near me for some odd reason. :P
It turns out it isn't the last Alone in the Dark game though, Alone in the Dark: Illumination has been released for PC... and it's way worse
We don't talk about that game...
it was playable......yea thats it you could play it far far worse
The epic finale of the Alone in the Dark Review saga, ;). It was really good man. It seems like a sad ending for a series that started so well and inspired a whole genre. As usual it was a very thorough and fun review to watch. This was really worth the wait man! :)

It took you some time but you finally did it. It's a good thing you took your time because it's a great review...as always of course.
Thank you :D This was a very challenging review to make, but comments like yours are the reason why i make these longer epic reviews.
Michael's Retro Game Reviews

The vocal music reminds me of a so g from from Stephen Kings The Mist soundtrack
another great video :) I have always been interested in this game so its good to see such a detailed video about it.

i'm not sure what game series i'll tackle next, but i have a few in mind ;) Thank you
This game aswell as Haze had so much potential. Those two games should have been classics!
Haze sucking was one of the reasons we have no Timesplitters anymore.
Oh god haze I remember that it was absolutely good times for me😁
Another good review!

Thanks for the awesome review Michael
What I like in this game:
James McCaffrey as Edward Carnby
The music
The concept
The monsters
References of the original games
What I dislike about this game:
The character development
Most of the characters
Edward’s constant swearing, as that’s out of character from his original appearances. And needlessly harsh.
Graphical glitches and gameplay issues
The endings
Not being able to state it’s a reboot, a continuation or both.
And also...
That F@%KING CAR CHASE!
and the subway boss fight
Never noticed Edward's voice actor was actually James McCaffery in this.
i didn't either until i did some research into it :O
Michael's Retro Game Reviews Maybe u should do the Max Payne trilogy. That would be awesome.
Good job on the review, I for one however wouldn't mind a few more newish game/series reviews like Legacy of Kain or Deus Ex but do what you want and enjoy ofcourse.
A retrospective on Legacy of Kain would be sweet!
*****
Exactly, the first game Blood Omen is still one of my all time favorite games. And the first Soul Reaver was a technical prowess for the time.
A retrospective on Legacy of Kain would be great. I personally would love to see one on the Gex series.
You should also cover 2Dark. The new Horror project by FREDERICK RAYNAL.
Well, now I need to do some sort of review of this game from a different perspective since I truly enjoyed that game and played through it several times.
Just subscribed yesterday. Good channel
Great review! and my sentiments exactly I would have preferred that myself the lo-key remake as opposed to what we got in the 5th one.
the remake was so over the top that i wounder, who was Eden games making it for? at least with the lo key remake it would of done better with a smaller more specific audience :) Thank you

There is a "Alone in the Dark" game on the GameBoy Advance.
I demand you to review it. Close the circle.
I played the 360 version like the day it came out. I loved it :) I really didn't run into many issues.
i wished i played your copy as mine must of faulty :) hehe
Great video. I honestly loved this game :)

This game wasn't bad... HOWEVER! Don't play the PS2 version.
What is the go to? 360?
James Daniel Massey The driving motion controls in the Wii version of this game are pure garbage.
I like the reviews whether they're retro or modern.
Thanks ;) i will always enjoy a well made review, but i do have a sort spot for retro reviews

-Your example at 17:41- is not a valid point, because that event is programmed to trigger when you climb to the bottom of the rope.
You didn't talk about the Favorites feature of the inventory.
have you played alone in the dark illumination ?
26:14 this is why inferno is the best port
this review was pretty damn perfect and on point in every way... you did forget to ad that the healing feature in the game was a but of a mess.... ambitious but a mess... you ended up looking like you had lumps of bacon stuck to you outfit lol

Weirdly enough, The Evil Within feels like a proper Alone in the Dark game if you ask me.
Gasoline bullets? I liked the phosphorous bullets of New Nightmare better. Who wouldn't want a triple barreled shotgun that could literally 'light up' a target. And what about that flashlight in NN? What about the newest alone in the dark - illumination
I played the demo of this game and I can buy it quite cheap for like £2-£4. Is it worth?
Taxi Rider Though kinda late, I personally really enjoyed the game except for the "hunt the roots" part... but then again, I love bad games :V
I would love if they released the AinD remake game one day!
maybe with the Atari VHS?
Lol
@@neil7090 Oh wow that comment did not age well over the last few years XD
PS2/Wii versions are indeed completely different games. Basically a scaled-down remake, if you will. Produced by an different company.
Why!? Why didn't they continue the remake!? It would be perfect! It's exactly what I planned for Alone in the Dark! Start the saga all over again, put it back in the 20's or 30's, make a good job in marketing, and lower the prices on other Alone in the Darks!

I loved the game on PC. Too bad we never got the PS3 improvements on the other platforms.
can you review some other survival horror, such as evil within.
A few days ago, Atari announced a reboot of Alone in the Dark, so there will be more!
(Hopefully better than the last game...I bought the Wii version, as a fan of the older titles, and it's THE worst game I have ever played in my whole life)
The PS2 Alone In The Dark game felt unfinished to me too.
i wouldn't say it's unfinished, but more based on an older build game of the game. i suspect this game was meant to come out in 2007, but went they decided to overhaul the game (360 &pc) they just released the ps2 and wii ports that were complete the year before, we well as the revamped xbox and pc versions.
Not once did you mention Jack in the Dark the little gadien game released around number 2
I thought this had SO MUCH going for it, but boy it also had such bad crap on the other end of things that made it a chore.
i think if this game had come out when it was meant to, people could of forgiven it's issues. But when they delayed it to re work the game, people just lost all patience when the end product was no better.
Would be a crime to remake the first one. Leave it as is please! Don't butcher it.
This game series being French, the voice acting is better in French than in English
oh puuuuuleeeeessseeee... make a review of Silent Hill series, i love them!!!!
They just need to remake New Nightmare, that's the only one that's actually worth playing.
whats with 0:48 ... morton manor from 2001 new nightmare, yet labeled 1936...this game is crap..
What is a notingk?
wow! shout for King Game Review X D
If this was a depressing note to end the series on, then Alone in the Dark: Illumination was the ugly dead twitch no one wanted to see.
Alan Wake did the same DVD-style thing.
yes it did! but i felt alan wake did a better of it, but i'm a sucker for anythink inspired by twin peaks :) lol so there go's my objectivity
Michael's Retro Game Reviews Have you played Deadly Premonition? I LOVE that game. That's one of the few games that Miles and I can actually agree on. It's one of my favorites and is heavily inspired by Twin Peaks.

well wish somewhat granted ther is another Alone in the dark game; Alone In The Dark Illumination... though its well... bad.
Reminds me of driver 3, and the scandal that they went through with the publisher trying to spin the game as being really good when it wan't...take the time to make the games good instead of yelling about it when sites review it and it get's shit canned. то есть Atari виноваты в провале игры?
Actually they were different games all together
29 people are NOT THE FUCKING UNIVERSE
alone in the dark illumination
All characters look very unapealing. And overall visual design is very ugly.
i bought a ps2 just for this game and was so dissapointed when i played it nothing like the inferno games before it.
Well by this point it isnt the last titel and not even the worst XD
review the new Alone in the Dark. :)
I love the PS free!
not the last entry of the series.....
A great game , horrible ending
PS FREE....FREE-60.
I respect your opinion but I don't agree with you.
I really liked this game and I think it is the best in the Alone in the Dark series.
there is a problem...its wrong on too many levels and doesnt feel like alone in the dark...so yeah...as a stand alone game..you may like it..but as an aitd fan..nope nope nipe
sandro ilpelato Weird, absolutely baffling.
