    I first picked up a bass thirty years ago. Dropped it after a year out of boredom because I had no roadmap. Bought another one two years ago, haven't bothered learning anything. It's not the instrument, I love bass. It's that I don't know where to go with it. This video is the first, of hundreds I have watched, that really clarified composition for me. Now I can see practicing scales in a different light. Very motivational.

    Nice lesson! Thankyou for the tabs to.
    If anyone wants to know an easy way to remember the modes just remember this
    Phrase "I Don't Particularly Like Modes A Lot"
    The first letter of each word in this phrase is related to the number and name of the mode and In this case in the key of F Major it's as follows:-
    MODE 1 - I - Ionian (F)
    MODE 2 - Don't - Dorian (G)
    MODE 3- Particularly - Phyrygian (A)
    MODE 4 -Like - Lydian (A#/Bb)
    MODE 5 - Modes - Mixolydian (C)
    MODE 6 - A- Aeolian (D)
    MODE 7 - Lot - Locrian (E)

    I like your style of bass playing and the way you explaining the bass playing concept. I truly enjoyed watching your bass tutorial videos. Can you do a video showing how diminished, augmented and suspended bass notes can be applied the major pentatonic and the minor pentatonic scales on a 5 string bass guitar chromatically? Excellent video. Thanks.

    Excellent video Dan, thanks for bringing it all together. Next level would be what to do when there is/are chords which do not fit in the key eg a major chord where the key says minor. Any tips Dan?

    I like the strange ancient Greek names of the modes. I occasionally thought; where does this come from? You're wonderful presentation answered that. Great videos. And you always refresh my memory, there's a lot to learn from you.

      Hi Dan' I was hoping maybe you would help me. I have the sheet music to Jaco Pastorius "Donna Lee".....,,,,
      The problem I'm having is with bars 45, 46,47,and 48. The pattern is B flat7 to B flat m7 to E flat7. The first two bars are eighth notes with a Triplett pattern starting on the fourth beat of bar 46 continuing through bars 47 and 48. Jaco uses frets 12 to 20. I can see the idea the problem is I can't figure out the fingering, would you help me?
      Thank You!

      You might be on your own with that one 😂 I haven’t checked that out in years. I’m a little busy right now to take a look - it took me ages to figure it out back in the day!

    Dan, often bass lines have anticipations. In the example you used in this video, you don't do that: the root note of the new chord comes in on the one. Can you give some rules of thumb when it is worth considering and when it is a bad idea to use an anticipation? Thanks!

    • @OnlineBassCourses
      @OnlineBassCourses  ปีที่แล้ว

      Can you let me know what an anticipation is? If you mean a chord coming in half a beat earlier (or being ‘pushed’) then that’s to do with the composition and how the chords are played rhythmically.
      You follow the rhythms, basically.
      In this example, it’s all straight so that requires playing on beat one.

    • @fudgesauce
      @fudgesauce ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@OnlineBassCourses -- Yes, exactly, coming in on the new chord say on the four-and instead of the one. Is it something the bass can do unilaterally? Or does it work only if the other instruments also come in early (which seems likely, but I've not really paid enough attention to know). Looking through some of the bass transcriptions I have downloaded, for example Jamerson's bassline on "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" does it frequently.

    • @fudgesauce
      @fudgesauce ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ... and a little bit more. "You follow the rhythms, basically". I mean, syncopations and triplets are exciting because they violate the simple quarter note or eighth note scheme. Is an anticipation in a similar category where a bassist can do it ala a syncopation to add some push and pull to the rhythm, or is it something that must be coordinated between the parts to sound good (eg, the guitars and keys must all be doing it too?)

    • @OnlineBassCourses
      @OnlineBassCourses  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@fudgesauce it’s very common and down - ultimately - to what fits and what sounds good.

    • @OnlineBassCourses
      @OnlineBassCourses  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@fudgesauce it’s a bit of both. Sometimes it’s obvious that you follow the other instruments and other times it feels like the right thing to do. Listen to loads of great bass players, see what they do and then steal the best ideas! That’s the way to do it.

    Hi Dan, Matteo from Italy here... love you videos, very useful. I'm thinking to enroll one of yout structured course. I'm playing since 2 years, with a bass teacher. do you reccomend "from beginning to bassist" or would it be too basic for me? Otherwise I'll go for "Funk Basss". Thank you!

    • @OnlineBassCourses
      @OnlineBassCourses  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi, Matteo! The best thing to do would be go to the From Beginner To Bassist sales page and scroll down. Every lesson is listed. If they look easy, it’s not for you. If you don’t know a lot of it, it might be. The Funk Course is a decent challenge for a beginner - lots of groove and rhythm practice as well as the introduction of a couple of modes and some fretboard knowledge lessons. Depends what you’re looking for right now. Check out those From Beginner To Bassist lessons first.

    Hi Dan! I really love your lessons. You are a great bass player and great teacher and I really have learnt a lot from your videos and materials and I am so thankful for that. I have been playing bass for 16 years now but I still come back to your videos to upgrade my vocabulary and to learn something new I missed in the past and you really do help me, brother in bass! Why don't you do some lessons on extreme metal playing like black metal, death metal etc., some technique stuff like tapping or other cool techniques and some lessons with learning rock and metal songs and/or riffs and do few tempos in your videos and show the tabs because one thing that lacks in your videos is playing from slower tempos to faster tempos and showing the tabs on screen so you can play to that and it would be cool if you consider that, Dan! It would make your lessons much more approachable for beginners and be comfortable also for more advanced players like me, and not only black metal and death metal but some country, soul, jazz and prog rock would be cool if you explained the genre, explained what is used the most there, show us some riffs and basslines and teach us a song with tabs on screen. It would be freakin' cool, mane! I love your lessons and I know it would upgrade your lessons 666%, Dan. Think about it. And think about the ideas I gave you with the genre stuff, songs learning stuff, tabs on screen and tempos from slow to fast, technique lessons witch more advanced stuff like tapping and it would be cool if you explained some things slower and not go so fast because sometimes I feel that you just play your improvisation and we can't follow that and sometimes I don't understand the reason why you play something in that scale/mode and why you play like this and what you play because you play too fast and you don't show tabs on screen. Really think about it, my friend. I love your lessons but it would really be awesome if you would do it and if you would consider my lessons ideas. I recommend your channel and website to all my friends that learn bass and now my girlfriend, well, fiance, will start her bass adventure and journey so guess what I will show her? onlinebasscourses with my favourite Dan Hawkins!!!!!!!! Love you, mane. Keep it going! And consider my ideas and things what I said about making your lessons better and easier and maybe no one ever told you that so I will be the one who told you about these problems. But don't think I don't appreciate what you do. Yo do a great effort and you keep us busy. THANK YOU FOR THAT!!!!!
