Hats off to you indeed, I wish more drivers had the attitude you did. Whilst I was a management trainee at Plymouth Citybus, I did a week with the cleaners/shunters, and it was by far and away the most valuable thing I did. A job you think would be simple and easy, was possibly the hardest work I've ever done in the bus industry. They work DAMN hard, and I could not keep up with them! I was totally and utterly knackered after my nights with them, but they were still there, happy to do more! Amazing people that as you rightly say, really aren't appreciated enough for what they do. I wish we could get more drivers to do similar to you, and indeed other members of management, just to open their eyes.

My dad owns a bus company in my local area, I’ve been shunting buses and parking them with supervision from my dad for years. I’m 16. Recently I’ve been doing it un-supervises for a few months and feel very comfortable squeezing a double deck scania into a tight space :)

Hey bud. Good on you for doing this wee video.
I myself was working at the Inverness stagecoach depot last year for near a year (until the stress was just too much to handle) I was mainly doing the parking although I had done everything else before that.
On week days when the schools were on there was around 90 buses to be done on that shift from 5pm to 1.30am.
I was the same as you about not confident enough to do the parking but had no choice and just take you're time when manoeuvring and dont hesitate to shout your head off at drivers that came in and abandoned a bus that will be in the way.
On a number of times I would be on my own until 9am to get buses washed and fuelled because of the other shunters (polish) buffered off home as the were stressed out themselves even though they were not doing the parking side of things. Had to stay because I couldn't have on my shoulders, leave unfuelled buses for the morning and leave absolute chaos for morning drivers. The place is a mess and really if you want a challenge then go there. I left because of major stress, not being appreciated by the bosses for the work I did and more pressure kept on being added even after I complained about the conditions. I always got appreciated by most of the drivers and the controllers and some would help at times when they could see the pressure I was going through whilst litterly running about cursing and near ripping my hair out. 50 busses is a walk in the park hahaha when I was there, there was a max of 5 shunters at times but usually only 3. Sorry for the long long rant but honestly it's great to see yourself actually recording a video of what can happen. Take care dude.

Good to see you guys hard at work. Our depot has about twice as many buses I think, if not more. After 8pm or so every night there's 3 lines of buses 5 or 6 deep just to go through the wash, not to mention all the ones already parked up!

Great vid, FCBD. It’s a similar thing with trains. The guys and gals do an amazing job, making them look (almost) new for the mornings early starts. The states they are left in at the end of the day are atrocious! I can imagine the same for buses. Hats off to the staff who transform the buses from scruffy to clean.
Great to show the public the stuff they won’t see and appreciate.

I did this for 3 months. At a well known bus firm that you worked for. From the bus coming in to entering the wash the sweeper has 3-6 minutes, depending on fuel load to sweep a 40-44ft bus off. I know the hardship. The regular shunters and cleaners are on £8.50p/h for a job that's very fast paced and physical.

The downside of parking them that tight is that if the "first" bus is broken and won't run, all other buses are pretty much screwed.. I can understand that the depo has limited parkingspace, but it's not a good idea to have them parked like that. If you ask me. :) But still, thanks for an interresting video. Keep it up.

Aren't you supposed to wear steel capped boots? Also regarding the smelly bus wash - The longer you don't use it the smellier it will become! It'll take a couple of washes to get rid of the smell.

Does every company have a different routine on how often the buses get cleaned? For example, once every week or month as opposed to once every night.
I was just wondering because, for the past month every bus I've got on to go to college has had rubbish still lying around, and the windows are almost impossible to see through with the amount of dirt on the windows.

Cold weather often prevents exterior wash due to freezing on the ground of the depot from water dripping off while parking

Hi mate, all companies do have different rules on how they clean!
as per the transport body, they must be in a respectable manner. We clean our buses every night to ensure they are ready for the next day!!
