Love Gunsmoke!!! Still watch it in reruns. I always think of the characters as my family lol. My mom had a big crush on Matt Dillon. Thanks for sharing.

#2, Bill Conrad WAS Marshal Dillon, On the Radio. He had no screen presence though. #3, J. Wayne said J. Arness was too tall to be His co-actor in westerns, suggesting Arness do his own thing. #9 Arness is brother to Peter Graves [Mission Impossible]. #17. Sam the bartender is also seen in the opening as the gunslinger in the prime duel.

Watched it on Saturday, and then Monday nights. Have the complete series on VHS, and wore them out watching. But the list is just as long for Bonanza, except for the number of episodes and years run. Enjoyed your 20 amazing facts.

Matt Dillon killed more men on GunSmoke than Paladin ever did on Have Gun-Will Travel. At least he tried to settle conflicts peacefully before he absolutely had to use his gun as a last resort.

Matt Dillion shot 407 people 😳In one season maybe. There are 635 episodes and I’ve watched them all twice and he usually shoots three or four people an episode. He almost always usually shoots at least one person per show. I’d be willing to debate that! I think it’s higher!!!

It does seem like it should be much higher, doesn't it?

@@TVYesteryear Yes like I said I’m pretty sure they’re 635 episodes. That would mean in 228 episodes, Marshal Dillon never shot anyone. That would also mean that he only shot one person per episode. Have you ever watched the show? I have watched countless shows where he shot multiple people. Maybe he’s killed 407 people that makes more sense?

While it is true that Jim Arness was in every episode of Gunsmoke, there were a good many episodes where he only made an appearance for a minute or two, either at the beginning or the end of the show. There was a good reason for this. In 1968 he fell in love with flying and got his pilot's license. He would then make a habit of persuading the show's writers to come up with scripts that would send his character away from Dodge, leaving Festus and Newly to carry the load in his absence for the remainder of the story.

Are you sure Matt only shot 407 people? It had to be 800 plus.
    Who counted?

I know, right? Seemed like a few every episode. Someone (it wasn't us) must've had a lot of time on their hands to watch 635 episodes and keep count.

I used to listen to the Lone Ranger on radio. Before tv. Before ac.
It would get so hot in my upstairs bedroom I’d be drenched in sweat by the end.
Didn’t William Conrad star in the Lone Ranger too?

I never knew James Arness was a natural blonde. I can't picture him that way. 🙁

William Conrad was better on radio then Arness was in TV.
