    I have a Sony KDL-32V2000 from ~2007 that is still going strong. Gets 10-15 hours of use per week. First thing I did when I purchased it was set the backlight brightness well below 100%.
    I'm convinced if people dialed the backlight brightness back a bit they'd get a lot more life out of their TVs. Especially the cheaper units that seem to drive the LEDs real hard.
    Of course saying that the TV will probably explode when I turn it on tonight : /

      @@jessede1970 don't have any and it would look even worse. There would be a color shift as new ones would be a totally different color as they have not aged. Then there is the headache aligning the lens over the led. Strips need to be removed to do it because the metal back will draw the heat away faster than you can heat it up to solder.

      Cool, couple of months ago got my sisters old Sony Bravia KDL-32D3000 LCD TV, also from 2007 and it's working just fine as well. First thing I looked through the brightness etc. settings, to make sure it's it's not set 100% brightness. Of course doesn't show HD channels, but lower resolution channels (cable) work just fine, and works as a display for videogame consoles as well.

    I'm trying to think when all this started to become the majority situation: Electronic goods made under license for a "manufacturer" in random different companies. E.g. (Apologies for using network technology as an example - because that's what I'm most familiar with nowadays) Cisco "made" a C3750G-48P-S Switch; some were made in China, some in the Philippines etc. Identical on the outside, ran on the same firmware/software but nothing inside was the same. I know it's kind of always been a thing, but when did it become the norm? Awareness of it sort of crept up on me in the 90's as I remember it.

    Good morning Dave.....now working on computers AND TV's......ya gotta work out the BUGS. At least it isn't an expensive elaborate paint job....just to have a friggin' FLY land and get stuck in the middle of a panel. Now, back on the subject of LED's....I took apart a LED light fixture which has about 60 tiny SMD LEDs per panel and found 3 of them to be defective. Since they are so small ( about 1/8th inch square ) how can I tell which polarity they have ? I looked at them under a scope and see no indicators. I will see if I can remove them with my hot air station and bridge the solder points. What is your scoop ?

    Those backlight LEDs are not that expensive as they were years ago, but it's sometimes hard to get the right ones (with about the same colour temp and brightness), you need quite a bunch of different ones in your drawers and still must be lucky. I always try to exchange them (with a heat gun), but for sure, those old TVs are not worth a dime.

      It's only worth keeping as a camera monitor. For that it looks fine. Even with 3 dead led it's watchable. I've had it running constantly since putting back together. The bug is now gone. Looks fine. I got it free and didn't have to spend a dime fixing it. I would never change LEDs. I have 2 other sets with a dead led and they look fine and have lasted no problem.

    When I was a young man many years ago there were TV repair shops. You don't see them anymore. The cost of labor has made their repair cost prohibited. I remember about twenty years ago I took my reel to reel into a shop for repair. The technician just looked at me and said we don't fix them. So, I gave it away along with new tape, and reels. It has become a common site to see them put out on the side of the road with the trash, along with washers, and dryers which use to last for years now only last until they're out of warranty. I've got a tube amplifier thats forty years old, and still working. If I sound like an old fart, it is because I am.

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes I am fully aware. 40 years ago I was just entering the repair business and it was a bad choice in life. I never really wanted to be a TV repair man, i wanted to be a TV cameraman or video editor. That is what i went to school for. I had played around with electronics from an early age and worked at a TV shop while in high school. I worked at a TV station for a couple of years both as an unpaid intern and a paid staffer doing master control but unfortunately i listened to my boss and did what i was told and when the shit hit the fan he covered his ass and threw me under the bus. That one mistake i made, removing a tape that had been eaten by a Panasonic umatic (the one i show on my logo unlacing) after my boss told me to carefully remove the tape cost me that job and got me blacklisted. I landed a job at Sony for a year and took their betamax training.
      Then ended up an at independent service center. In 1983 minimum wage was 3.15 an hour. Sony paid 9.50 and the independent shop offered me 10 an hour to start. Working in electronics repair threw up plenty of roadblocks. Try to get a mortgage and the banker tells you up front that they don't think you will be working long enough to pay it off so they declined. Mid 80 thought the 90s however proved to be money making years as VCRs needed lots of maintenence to keep them running. Around 2000 the decline started and I got out in 2003 as I could see the future was definitely not friendly. Many a colleague however told me i was crazy that these new flat panel TV's would be real moneymakers. I left and went to a totally different industry. I too have a vintage tube amp. An old McIntosh tube receiver. Worked the last time i tried it which was probably 12 years ago.

      @@12voltvids I wanted to be a computer technician when the big mainframes were still tubes, but because I was color blind, they wouldn't accept me into the school. I also remember them replacing the tubes after so many hours. They had two baskets. one full of new tubes, and an empty one. They would go cabinet to cabinet pulling tubes, and throwing them in the empty basket, and installing new tubes. There were hundreds of tubes. This computer filled a room 30X60 foot and the cabinets were cooled through the bottom of a raised floor. It took twenty tons of air conditioning to cool them. A couple months later the computer was replaced with a transistorized. Compute that was the size of a refrigerator, and twice as fast. They removed the old computer outside and left it there. I asked if I could remove some of the meters, and they let me. Oh, the good old days.

    Your soldering would improve if you used flux on the connections prior to trying to tin the jumper points. You could also use an eraser to clean the pads which removes the oxidation on the copper pads. That is an old school trick for cleaning leads and such on components. Thank you for taking the time to do this video :)

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Flux has got nothing to do with it it's called heat. These strips are aluminum backed and the PC is just a flex pc glued to the heat sync. Usually i crank the iron up to 850. I didn't this time. I had it at 700f and it takes time to transfer the heat to get the pad to flow temp. The solder has plenty of flux in it. Why do you think they call it rosin core. Flux has nothing to do with it. The land has to get to the melting temp for the solder before anything happens.

    • @dalevanderzee4086
      @dalevanderzee4086 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@12voltvids I beg to differ here, you are only partially right. Flux in the core of solder helps to clean the pads too. the problem arises when you try to solder where the back plane consumes much of the heat from the soldering iron. If the pads are not clean to start with it takes more heat to transfer heat into the pads. Extra flux does 2 things, it cleans the pads and also provides a mechanism to help transfer the heat into the pads. Instead of being smug about my helpful tip, maybe you ought to do some research on the topic. I have been soldering including micro soldering for over 40 years.

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't replace the strips. Not worth it. A single led that goes out you won't see. Even 3 on this one is barely noticeable and it's only going to be used for monitoring security cameras so no big deal. Changing strips is no more reliable because the new ones can fail just as easy as the old ones. LEDs normally don't fail unless they were defective in manufacture and you won't know if the new ones are defective till they fail. I don't want to have a set sitting apart for weeks awaiting parts and i certainly don't want to risk putting it together and then apart again when parts cone in. I've bypassed a bunch of them over the years and all still working fine.

    Hi, 12volt, I have a question about replacing the big capacitor in the power supply section of my 1986 20" Sharp Linytron set. The original capacitor is 620uf@200v. I've checked Digikey, Mouser, Newark and several other electronics parts retailers and I can't find any 620uf capacitors at any voltage in stock. The only in stock potential replacements I can find are either 560uf@200v and 680uf@200v. As long as the voltage of the replacement capacitor is 200v or above, can the replacement capacitor be either 560uf or 680uf and if the answer is yes, am I better off using a 560uf or 680uf capacitor, considering that the capacitance of the original cap is 620uf. That tv is total junk, the leds are pretty blue and were definitely overdriven.

      They are not that blue. The camera is color balanced for 3400k so naturally 6500k led will look blue. Color looks good. The bug appears to have found the way out.
