You don’t need to sneak. It’s the “Navy open house” right now. It’s plenty of museums are there this week.
At least he doesn't have to plan a heist to get a radome off a Ticonderoga.

one of those three ships is "off-limits" of allowing someone from the "active fleet" and museum ship organizations. The ex-USS Halybuton is currently on what is called "donation list" which means it , that private non-profit organization has put forward a plan to the US Navy to turn it into a museum ship. The US Navy has a three step or phase process it follows before it would be approved or not. So currently, no one , would be allowed by the US Navy to board the Halybuton to take -by hand , useable parts until the USN renders its decision.

Hello from Alberta. Been following this from the start. We also had Ryan and Libby do an online info session for cadet corps during covid. They did an amazing job.
I was on the Oliver H Perry 80-82, for all our deployments they only ever brought on 1 helo. We had some great times, caused a bit of trouble here and there. It was great seeing these ships during your video, Thanks.
USS Carr (FFG 52) was my dad's ship back in the late 80s. Sad to see her being broken up but I'm glad she can help out the New Jersey.

Served on USS Clifton Sprague (FFG-16) now in service with Turkey as TCG Gaziantep (F-490) and remains in active service. I am pleased to learn that a Perry class FFG may become a museum ship.
Man, I wish I could come out and see it, but I'm on the other side of the country. Only battleship I've ever been on was the USS North Carolina. At least the North Carolinas were the closest to the Iowas in terms of overall design (and shared some parts), just a bit smaller and lesser-armored. The South Dakotas were a very odd design; short and fat, designed to make them a smaller target and being able to cover more of the ship with their armored citadel. And as a consequence their machinery spaces were done rather strangely and they differ greatly from the Iowas and North Carolinas. They were also very cramped onboard, as well.
As someone who works at an air museum i can confirm that we do tow our aircraft to the boneyard to get parts periodically. You just have to make sure that you dont put to much on the plane on your way back otherwise you will lose the tow and the exhibit plane.
In all honesty tho is is amazing to see what you are doing. The operation of an air museum is certainty interesting, but i could never imagine having our entire building put on wheels and driven to the other end of the airport so they could paint the underside of the foundation. What you guys do over there is something else compared to our 30 thousand square foot operation in the midwest. I keep coming back to this channel because of all the amazing work you people do, keep it up and help preserve a that beautiful piece of history for future generations to awe at.
How much fun is Ryan having? The man lights up when he talks about these old hulks. Great to see the recycling and reusing efforts. Taxpayers should understand the entire lifecycle of their navy, and how much space is taken up by these policies.

Before you even mentioned it I was thinking the USS Arleigh Burke needs to be a museum ship not just as an honor to the exceptional class of ships but as an honor to the exceptional officer and man.
An Ohio Class sub would be cool to tour. I give it about a zero percent chance of ever happening, but one can dream.
You are right on both counts. I got to tour one with my dad in Georgia when I was about ten yrs old. Coolest memory. It seemed like a space ship! Spent like 10 minutes looking through the periscope, (left eye only, right side was the main scope and I think might have been classified).

I agree, SS United States deserves rescue also. I believe she still holds some speed and endurance records all these years later. With all the money our government squanders, I would think there should be a federal grant for such a historic vessel somewhere.

There’s nothing left to rescue. Those donors keeping her bills paid really ought to spend their money on more viable projects.
@@jimmiles33 many of the 'items' sold off are still in collections... Much of the remainder can be built back like movie sets because she will be forever welded to the dock, as they say. One idea was to make her into an entertainment destination; that won't require restoration since all new stuff will be needed for that use.

Former LCS-11 USS Sioux City should be made into a museum for military procurement practices, after having served less than 57 months from commissioning to decommissioning.
Haha so true. Sail it as far up the Potomac as it will go, so Congress can go visit it frequently.

Most will end up in foreign navies and probably still be in service for 30 years plus..I think Greece just bought 4 freedom class ones.
@@neilcarter77 I thought no one was going to take them second hand due to how expensive they are to maintain and the limited capabilities they offered. Much better frigate types available on the open market.
@@davec3400 once the gearing issue has been fixed they will be sold off. Plus the foreign navies will probably add other weaponry and such. Hell there are still Knox and Perry class frigates still in service.
We now know Ryan is envious of the hangers on the frigets and his master plan has become clear.
#1. Plan your dry dock on the two weeks the navy opens ships for salvage.
#2. Tell everyone this is for routine maintenance and even let them paint it, maybe give some dry dock tours for cover.
#3. Back your battleship into the drydock across the street from said frigets.
#4. Overnight magically a few bolts get loosened.
#5. A few dollars fall into the hand of the crane operator next to the dry dock.
#6. Wahla...in the morning you have aircraft hangers on the fantail of your battleship.

It's great that the Navy openly supports museum ships where there is a really good bi-partisan arrangement.
SS United States is definitely my top pick for a ship that needs to be turned into a museum.

I work for Lockheed Martin in Moorestown, NJ, and was lucky enough for myself and my recently relocated family to get onboard the USS Donald Cook when it was at Penns Landing for her commissioning. They had a family day for LM employees, and I have pictures of my two sons (who were 4 and 5 at the time) in the captains chair on the bridge! We were on the USS New Jersey for one of the early Scout nights, and I remember comparing the equipment to what we were used to at work. We've also been to Battleship Cover several times. Would really love to see an Arleigh Burke destroyer as a museum ship sometime in my coming retirement.
I'd sure like to see a Tico class missile cruiser turned into a museum ship. always liked them since I had the chance to visit USS Ticonderoga when she accompanied USS Iowa on a visit to my home town, very many years ago.
I was on all of those FFgs in the 80s, Halyburton has the most storied history. Great crew and ship!
I want to see one of the modern super carriers saved, they're absolutely amazing.
Unpopular pick: a tender, maybe a GOMPERS class destroyer tender. Big and ugly, but so many things to check out. They were floating factories, with huge repair divisions that even included a foundry.
My dad spent some time on a Destroyer Tender in Vietnam, he'd love to see that and so would I!

Same here. I was hoping he was going to insert a picture or vid clip of their haul of neat, vintage Navy ship parts. Hopefully, a future video will document that.

I commissioned the last of the Perry Class, USS Ingraham FFG-61. Never did get my plank when Ingraham was decommissioned.
It'd be nice to turn the FFG USS Samuel B. Roberts into a museum. She has a real legendary accomplishment to go along with her predecessor.
Too late, she was towed from Philadelphia to Brownsville TX in 2022 for scrapping. :(

So glad to learn of the disposition of the Halyburton. I last saw her coming into the Boston Navy Yard many years ago while touring the Fletcher class Destroyer Cassin Young. She tied up behind the Destroyer as I recall and I still have a couple of photo's of her there. I hope this group from Erie is able to get the ship. And congratulations on your obtaining more spares for New Jersey while in the neighborhood. New Jersey looks great and I look forward to seeing her back in Camden.

Ryan, You forgot to mention that Naval Surface Warfare Center Philadelphia is in League Island and has approximately 2000 scientists and engineers that currently support the navy’s ship propulsion systems. They are also part of NAVSEA.
I choose to believe that an Iowa Class Battleship is the zenith of museum ship curation. Although, it's great that there is always a next goal line to reach for personal development.
The Spruances would have made good museum ships to teach the public about all of their revolutionary systems and capabilities. They are nearly all gone now. The Perry's follow this revolution and take up less dock space, some of them like Halyburton are combat veterans of multiple conflicts. Knox class FF would have been cool as would be old SSNs.
I would love to see more merchant ships turned into museums. Ships such as the SS Jeremiah OBrien, SS Red Oak Victory, Queen Mary etc.
Next minute there is a second ship being towed back to Camden with that beautiful hanger space
As a former Perry class frigate sailor I’m glad that their parts will live on in another ship. I also hope the Halliburton succeeds in being a museum ship
USS Liberty should have been made a museum.
I would like to see an Ohio Class Submarine turned into a museum ship. They will start decommissioning them soon. The only US Nuclear Sub which is a museum ship is the USS Nautilus SSN 571.

@@captiannemo1587 The French accomplished it. French submarine Redoutable (S611) They even opened the Engine room something the US has failed to do on USS Nautilus regardless that it was prepped for display when converted to a museum boat.
Nautilus is also a crap museum. Subs make bad museums in the first place, the location is terrible, and it's so restricted you get a quick 20-minute walk and done

I wish the Halyburton folks the very best in their efforts. There had been an effort to save a Spruance class DD but that fell through and with the exception of ex-DD 964 Paul Foster they're all gone now. The Navy wasted zero time in either sending them to the breakers or sinking them. Like the F-14s of that age, none were held in reserve for any appreciable time even as parts "donors" for the Aegis cruisers which share the same hull, electronics and powerplants.

i worked in the base museum at Beale AFB Ca and we had a standing invitation to the Suisun Bay Reserve operations for non-destructive stripping of about a dozen different ships. we could take anything we wanted, as long as we didnt compromise the hull.
we had collected 100s of WWII era navigation charts, dozens of WWII M1 helmets (ive got one in dark gray with fixed bales with a correct fiber liner). we got lots and lots of other small bits and pieces.
dont finish all of the work too quickly! im coming out next saturday (18 May)!!!

Since a Flush Deck/4 Piper did not make it an OHP Frigate will be a great museum ship to represent the little appreciated " low on the totem pole" work horses of the navy!

Another thing about Oliver Perry Class - the amount of space they have after removing the crazy amount of torpedoes they used to carry.
If they ever award an Arleigh Burke Class ship as a museum, I'd love to work with Ryan on that project. Ryan is a wealth of information and would be an awesome guy to work with and hang around. I'm a history nerd, too.
I don't work in a Navy museum ship, but I am connected to two museum houses. My only connection to Navy ship museums is multiple trips to the USS Blueback Submarine and the USS Missouri, which I've been on twice.

My first ship was the USS OSCAR AUSTIN (DDG 79) out of Norfolk (currently being home port shifted to Rota). That would be fun to turn into a museum ship. DDG 79 was the first Flight IIA destroyer which means it was the first to have the two hanger bays. I think being a ‘special’ ship in the Arleigh Burke class would make it a fine candidate for a museum ship down the line

Ryan should go visit USS Pueblo. That's a museum ship with a lot of stories to tell. Might be hard to steal parts from it.

Hopefully when the Navy gets the USS Pueblo back from its current unfriendly users, it will be preserved as a museum ship. It has been through too much to let it be scrapped. Plus, there are no examples of a late 1960s US spy ship remaining intact.

The two Museum ships I would have loved would have been HMS Rodney in USS Alaska, but we're about 60-80 years to late for those
I think the USS New York has a good chance at becoming a museum ship one day. It'd be a long shot, but having the new USS New Jersey attack sub moored next to her namesake someday would be undeniably cool, there being very few post-WWII subs on display. The ship that I think most needs preservation today is SS United States.

Thank You for showing the Perry's. I have the opportunity to go aboard ships there in Philly for parts. I went aboard some ex Spruance Class destroyers. I served on 3 Perry;s. , a Spruance , Knox and a Burke Flight IIA, so any of those ships are worthy to me to become museums.
Id like to see more submarines saved as museum ships. That would be awesome. Ive only ever heard of a few of them.

I disagree. They're terrible museum ships. You walk fore to aft down the one corridor, have a look at some tiny cramped rooms, and leave. As a solo museum there's just nothing that attractive, but they're okay as part of a larger museum.
Shoutout to Battleship Alabama Museum Park, where the Drum's conning tower is open for visitors. Only sub museum with more than one level open.
My dad served on the USS Elrod, and I was on a dependents cruise during that time.
Having been on the Wisconsin when she was active in the 80’s ……. I am grateful these beautiful ships are being well maintained. But……. I can’t tell you how sad it is to see them missing the people and hearing the noises, feeling the vibrations and just experiencing a living combat ship that can be ready for battle in a short period of time.

Can we hear a bit more about the memorial side. Some of the stories behind those who served on the ship and gave the ultimate sacrifice.
As I am Australian, the ship I would like to see turn into a museum would be HMAS Collins or one of her sister ships.
One of the reasons I heard Halyburton was of interest as a museum hold was also her involvement with Maersk Alabama and Capt Phillips. Personally, I felt Sammy B should have been saved if not for material condition than her story and crew sacrifice, and the Navy's significant investment to fix her. Same for the Cole if we do get to save 51s.
Another OHP worth saving is Simpson, who is still at Philly. Operation Praying Mantis, last ship to in service to sink an enemy ship by direct fire.
Constitution has a ship-to-ship kill remember.
I hope they are able to save USS Cole given the historic nature of that ship.
Would be very cool to have an Arleigh Burke as a museum ship. Since the navy is decommissioning lcs I'd also love to see an independence class lcs as a museum ship
The often forgotten USS Blueback was launched in 1959 and is over as OSMI.
My 2nd ship was the USS OLIVER HAZARD PERRY FFG-7 that was actually stationed at the Philly Base. I remember seeing all the mothballed ships at Philly. This video brought back a lot of memories. Thanks!!
Surprising the RAN has not been there to take the Perry Class ships as they are - although we operated them until 2019, we are in need of a few more ships... Actually, after a later question, the whole RAN is a museum fleet.

Call me fortunate. A friend was on the last Elrod crew. I was able to attend as a guest at the decommissioning ceremony. With no power, we went through the whole ship at night with flashlights.
And I did the 4/27 N.J. dry dock tour.

This stripping by Museums has been going on for a long time; I was ina crew from the South Street Seaport Museum that spent a weekend aboard the Cruiser Macon getting a diesel generator and miles of dock lines off her in 1969. We even used a big chain hoist to move an even larger hoist. What an experience! TM retired but still likes old ships
Would love to see an LHA, they are awesome and unique in the mission and capabilities and are very underrated.
