    "The highest tribute to Ayn Rand, is that her critics must distort everything she stood for in order to attack her. She advocated reason,
    not force; the individual’s rights to freedom of action, speech, and association; self-responsibility, NOT self-indulgence; and a
    live-and-let-live society in which each individual is treated as an END, not the MEANS of others’ ends. How many critics would dare
    honestly state these ideas and say, ” . . .and that’s what I reject”? --Barbara Branden

      "... society in which each individual is treated as an END, not the MEANS of others’ ends." Well well, if she didn't steal that from Kant, and then distort what _he_ had to say in order to attack him. Sounds strangely familiar.

      John what’s the difference between “ self interest “ and selfish? Isn’t objectivism believing people are basically good? I believe in critical thinking and I agree with free speech but I don’t think conservatism has anything to do with people being basically good, Politics don’t change people. Reason can’t make people good. Happiness is a goal? A goal to what?

    • @Scum8ag
      @Scum8ag 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      No. You just have to watch her interview from 1959 with Mike Wallace to realize how ruthless her thinking was. She was a victim of extreme collectivism: communism. Her response was to go to the other end of the spectrum: the extreme individualism.
      Altruism is evil she says. Most people are not worthy of love. LOVE! An objectivist fetishizing pure reason speaks about love, a completely irational, emotional phenomenon.
      Ayn Rand is a joke when it comes to moral philosophy. She is a bit less of a joke in economical theory but there she has not brought in anything new.

      @@Scum8ag don't worry, pal! You are an absolute joke in every field you are trying to reason.

      Gerardo Leon... Look into the possibilities of Minarchy at the Federal Level (Protection of life, liberty and the pursuit of property), but at the State and lower levels, Subsidiarity forms of government. With this model, states would become in direct competition with each other to form the BEST possible ideas, simply because they would try to attract businesses and citizens to their state over others. People can vote with their feet. This form of state government is preferable because states do not have the ability to create money out of thin air like the Fed does.

      He slams Trumps trade ambitions in 2016, but now we can see the effects of Trumps trade deals. More jobs and pay rises for Americans. China be damned if they want to militarize the south china sea and run massive trade surpluses with the US because the US is determined to be free traders and do nothing.
      Free trade is freedom to do deals with whoever you want. It's not some magical market that we all trade on, like the stock market is made out to be.
      If you want a job, you have to make a deal with an employer, and vice versa. If government ignores the power dynamic involved, between individual employees and the huge companies they work for, and lets huge companies collude against all individuals, you lose individualism in your society.
      Corporate power is just as bad as government power IMO. Not in degree, but certainly in kind.

      It was mostly caused the Federal Reserve's cheap money policies. This fueled the greed of the banks, and given that banks knew they'd be bailed out if it all goes to hell, why wouldn't they make risky loans to people they knew would default, and then bundle / sell that debt away?
      When you combine the fuel of cheap money with the guaranteed government safety net, you get an explosion. Who would have thunk it.

      The narrative you've been buying into is what is "backwards". It was actually the "community reinvestment act" which coerced and encouraged banks to lend/give mortgages to unqualified borrowers. Glass Steagall really has very little to do with what happened. Government regulations fueled an asset bubble by encouraging banks to give out mortgages like candies. The crash was 30 years in the making

    Many of you that seem to be implying that Ayn Rand was a Libertarian and I'd like to point out that she was very opposed to the Libertarians. Unlike just about everyone in today's political arena, Ayn Rand's political ideas were DEEPLY rooted in more fundamental philosophy (metaphysics, epistemology, ethics). She realized that the ONLY way to properly support Capitalism is by having the right ideas on those antecedent branches of philosophy. The Libertarians, by and large, ignore or shun philosophy and support liberty "for liberty's sake" in a vacuum. Perhaps they give lip service to the "non-aggression principal" without articulating the fundamental philosophical ideas that prove aggression to be wrong (and often failing to discern between initiated aggression and retaliatory aggression i.e. pacifist foreign policy). It's crucial to understand that, for Ayn Rand, ideas were connected and hierarchical and there were no shortcuts. Although many of her political ideas aligned with Libertarians, her method of arriving at those ideas was very different.

I'm surprised that you can see the chaos within the political left as they attempt to divide society into ever smaller minority groups, while attacking each other in an ideological purity spiral, and come to this conclusion. I don't know how you can watch this video and still think collectivism has any merits. Why bother breaking society up into ever smaller minorities, the multitude of which is potentially infinite, with everyone potentially belonging to a near infinite number of different minority groups simultaneously, when we can just go straight to the smallest minority, the individual?

    Thanks Dave for having Yaron Brook on your show. I've read all of Ayn Rand and Leonard Peikoff's books. I have many of their audio and video lectures from the Ford Hall Forum. The one thing that has helped me throughout my entire life since being introduced to Objectivism some 20 years ago is to think in essentials. Unfortunately, we live in a world that Yaron has described with decades of bad education and the worship of emotion. Dealing with most people has become a challenge and has also made me skeptical for humanities future. Perhaps with shows like yours there may be a chance. I hope so for my children and grandchildren's sake.

    Man I love this show I've been watching it so much It's really help me find my principles but also made me expand my political view I've become more tolerant of other views That are different from my own. I'm 18, I'm African American and I've always considered myself a democrat. But since I've been watching this show for about 3-4 months I've found my political footing I am a classical liberal just like Rubin. But I've definitely leaned a lot more conservative than I would've thought. It's ironic considering that I'm black so most assume I'm for the left but really they are disgusting and vile people. I'm for limited government but also believe in public education roads and parks. I'm for gun rights, freedom of speech, less government spending and a freer market. I hope all who see this whether you a agree or not just at the very least just be able to discuss other ideas. Be tolerant. Just spread peace, liberty, and tolerance. I hope we can get more shows like this to become mainstream. Because this show and shows like this are the only way to preserve American principles.

You should be able to listen to people that hold different views to you no matter in what proportion. The only way to understand your own position is to have it tested by opposing views, that is why it is so valuable because you may better understand your own beliefs through conversation, whether or not you change your mind. At the end of the day ideas cannot hurt you. Doing a great job Dave providing a platform for a variety of speakers and views.

    I was a firm supporter of authoritarianism for the longest part of my life, because I thought that the intellectual elite becomes politicians and they'd be the best people to guide the less intelligent.
    living in germany I had to witness over the last years how detached from reality most politicians are and how frivolous they spent our tax money.
    I am forced to pay for so much which I would never pay for if I had the choice.
    I see people relying on the state to help them out even (our especially) when they make bad choices in life.
    I see how the state neglects his main role, to protect the moral people from the immoral, just for the sake of an ideology.

    The modern rational mind is a voice in the the wilderness. This is so very refreshing! I may not agree on every point, but from my observations of society, I share the pain of watching emotionalism overtake rational thought. It is not easy being an actual scientist these days. Thank you, Dave and Yaron. I will offer one caveat: consider what it takes to be effective. There are a number of practical compromises. Being too idealistic loses the flexibility to be effective.

  • @fedorpakhomov1054
    @fedorpakhomov1054 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    First, I want to say that it is very good to hear a discussion of major questions rather than the current political situation.
    On the other hand, I have the same impression from Yaron Brook as I had before from libertarians. I mostly agree with their declared intention but their answers to incredibly complex problems are strikingly simplistic.
    Take for example his reasoning on minimum wage. He correctly observes that increased minimum wage would lead to the fact that the people which work cost less than the minimum wage will not be able to find job. It is true, but if one stops here, the all complex effects on economy of raising minimum wage would be left unnoticed: the profit that an employee gives to an employer is determined not only by the employee abilities but rather both the employee abilities and the economical situation (and the situation would change if minimum wage would be raised); the large amount of low qualification employees would be still needed even if employers would need to pay more; the jobs that would be lost due to automation isn't necessary a bad thing overall, the automation will create good jobs in technology and the development of new technology will reduces the cost of life in long run. I don't claim that I have done full overview of the situation, clearly there are effects that I haven't mentioned and I don't know exactly how would they interplay. I wanted to show that the issue of the minimum wage is complicated and should be a subject of deep investigation and discussion rather than simplistic rejection or acceptance.
    The love of Greek philosophy and the opinion that scientific method was discovered by Aristotle were also telling. The Aristotle philosophy largely could be described as a philosophy of common sense, i.e. it difference from science is that the considerable part of Aristotle works is about describing how things look like from a rational perspective at the first glance and science is mostly about gaining deeper rational understanding of things (coming closer to what things really are). Also, in the same pattern falls the rejection Kant and (almost?) all post-Kantian philosophy. Really why would people that like only simple solutions be interested in say Kant's sophisticated attempt to rescue objectivity from the solipsism critique, if they could just postulate objectivity?

      Think of how much better his intros would be if tempered by some of Rubin’s compatriots. I hope they give home feedback on how much an outlet should crow.
      To measure your output so a to not harp on about ‘how much we’re changing things’ or ‘isn’t it great? I can feel it in the air.” These are rookie thoughts to which he should apply a filter.
      If one would occasionally recognize their place in the timeline of awareness, one would aptly modulate deferential thoughts into their flag-posting monologues.
      Let me show some love as I’m typically on the same page that he espouses. And how conflicted he rolls...love it.

    This interview can be summed up in one word; BRILLIANT! This is what Libertarianism is all about, another single word explanation, FREEDOM, in all aspects. The one thing to note is that; one's freedom ends where another's begins.
    Smoke marijuana if you want to, but don't get behind the wheel and cause an accident, because you've just violated another's freedom to live. If you smoke it and it affects your job performance, then you violated the freedom of the employer to make more money by employing you because you are not as effective in your job, and should fire you. Simple reason, simply freedom.

(hence the tone of my comment) Some of what he says is just irreconcilable nonsense so I'm not sure that it matters to me whether it's malice or wilful ignorance. However, it's worth giving more thought so thanks.

    • @Kyrieru
      @Kyrieru 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Praktikool Well, it's always good to have people that take the time to fact check stuff rather than taking things at face value. Most people don't have the time to check up on subjects that aren't totally personally relevent. It's worth noting though that it's important where you get your facts, (raw data and studies vs articles, for example), since there are some subjects that are publicly dominated by incorrect narratives and false information, and you find yourself with an opposing view, but yet another need for fact checking.

As I read the book, it really showed me who I am and who I wanted to be. I just didn't know this because i'd never had a chance to learn about Ms Rand's philosophy.

He's going for a winning scenario on his side. it's up to the other side to get a winning scenario for their side. As for tariffs, no tariffs on our side HOPING (not reason, but emotion) that the other side "feels" some pressure to do the same is ridiculous. Why would China, a country which is constantly doing things to specifically hurt our country's economy, suddenly be OK with FREE TRADE with the USA? Also, why is it that, with NAFTA, which was a free trade agreement, MILLIONS of jobs and hundreds of businesses went to Mexico? How is that BENEFICIAL to our country. I believe Mr. Brook is looking at the GLOBAL economy when he talks about free trade and no tariffs. That benefits the global economy, but does not necessarily benefit our specific country. Using REASON AND LOGIC, it is clear that tariffs and trade deals ARE beneficial to our country and our economy. Just looking at the numbers, our economy has improved on a larger scale with the new trade deals President Trump has negotiated than with the free trade or previous trade deals. So, logically and using reason (which means going by the numbers which are unbiased), we can clearly see his policies are working for our country.

      That's rationalism, you need to have principles, tarrifs and sanctions are anti trade, they violate individual rights and also they are not even good for economy and definitely not good for indoviduals

    The best survey of Ayn Rand and Objectivism ever! I have always admired this amazing woman. I predict that she will eventually be recognized as one of the greatest philosophers who ever lived.
    In a more rational world, feminists would embrace Rand as one of their heroines.
    Kudos to Dave Rubin for inviting Yaron Brook!

    My Dad and Mom both liked Rand's books. As did I when I read them as a young man. They were both independent souls, Mom and Dad, and shared that despite divorce. It seeped into my life, that of my Brother and Sister, all for the better of it.

    Wow, again my eyes have been opened, forcing me to look at, and understand a different philosophy. Although knowing very little about either Ayn Rand or her views, I was usually dismissive of any notion I might have of actually finding them out.
    At first put off by his somewhat strained accent, after listening to Mr. Brook for a short while, I was fully engaged. I found his arguments lucid, easy to comprehend, and certainly worth consideration. Kudos to Dave for another great interview!

      I'm somewhat of an objectivist, and I'm perfectly fine with people never agreeing with everything Rand said. People don't have to believe everything she wrote: there's been thousands of philosophers, you agree with some, you disagree with others, but the fact is you disagree with their ideas, and think they are wrong.
      Rand is smeared so much, that you're almost led to believe that even trying to read what she actually wrote is more dangerous than the ideas out of Meim Kampf. It is funny, because, as Nassim Taleb has suggested, that if the left hadn't smeared Rand like it always does, one wonders if there would've ever been enough hype around the book to peek people's interests.

    A critique of Ayn Rand's philosophy swirls the gaps that exist in economic freedom and social thinkers' minds challenging us to rethink the beliefs we hold with regard to rationalism, capitalism, collectivism and morality while at the same time provoking us to embrace objectivism.
    The smallest minority in the world is the individual. I agree.
