@PushupsandSteps don't bro. Stuff happens, keep on bouncing, it's just sparring. Try to change styles, keep training. Every boxer had humbling experience
Tim great break down, seems like a lot of fighter's today forgot the art of "hit but don't get hit" and the " Philly Shell " is a great way to accomplish that goal ! You and Smokin Joe had different versions but equally effective! Thanks for another great lesson my grandson is learning a lot !
@@timwitherspoon1378 Holla champ. I just got into boxing, and given the bad history of my forehead, i've been lookin' into the cross guard and I realized you are the best at that defense. Sadly, you only covered the "Mayweather" Philly shell here. I will do anything to see a tutorial of that cross guard. We've all been asking. Pleaaaaseeee champ.

Heavy weight boxing wouldn’t be the what it is without Terrible Tim Witherspoon. You did your thing in the hardest era of heavy weight boxing history. It is an honour to subscribe to your channel as your knowledge and wisdom is invaluable and will be much appreciated forever, thank you brother Tim!, much love!, A true legend!!! ❤️❤️
Tim Whiterspoon's course on his legendary defense? It is a dream come true after spending so much time imitating it back in the day after watching those hw bouts.
Man Tim, where were you when I needed you? Great teaching video!!! Bill "Superfoot" Wallace used the "Shell" and his left hand and left leg to go Undefeated in his Pro Kickboxing Career. This defensive position and technique works GREAT for a Kickboxer and I used it a LOT! Thanks for this very effective technique.
Great details. This channel is going to blow up once the word gets out. One small thing I noticed that may help Roy is to hold a tennis ball to his lower throat/upper chest with his chin and that will help to tuck the chin. Also to have him stand with his back against a wall and just practice blocking head shots to get in the habit of not turning his head away from punches and exposing the side of his face/chin and back of his head. One of the hardest natural reactions to break is to not turn away from punches. Everybody does it in the beginning. You are a master Mr. Witherspoon and I loved watching you fight growing up. Please keep sharing your knowledge. I wish I was 25 years younger and had access to your teachings.
Tim is such a excellent coach. Great breakdown on the philly shell and foot work telling champ to get the right foot over more.. Mr witherspoon you definitely a legend and it always shows.. thank you for a excellent channel.. from Jay mosely dallas tx 1 luv
I notice when top lvl guys use the Cross Guard like Archie Moore, You, Max Baer, George Foreman, Marciano, Frazier, it really seems to help them keep control of the center of the ring and make the other guy have to move or come closer to you. I got in trouble during my 1st Amateur sparring expo for using it when smaller Heavyweights jumped on me and the ref said it was pushing.
This is one of the best and most intuitive TH-cam videos on the low left lead guard. Thanks champ for sharing your wisdom and posting such great content.
Champ looks great, he was in his 60s for this. Amazing Coaching job, the excitement the praise, checking on how they feel, the reinforcement, this is how it is done.
I think this is better than most popular channels because it covers the progression and potential mistakes instead of just showing off they know moves real quick to sell views 👍👍👍
Great instructions from the champ. Great personality and coaching. Roy is raw clay with potential he was at my gym a few times good kid with a nasty right hand. Now He’s under great tutelage. 👍🏾
Could you show some more videos on how to practice the philly shell? That drill you showed where you throw 6 punches and the boxer blocks them is really nice. What als do you do/recommend on how to practice this defence? Thank you
Thanks bro, cool channel! yea first time someone put it your way.... "It's a Shell..." I like using the Philly Shell in sparing, and I found that it's very natural to shift into 52 Blocks from it, which is exactly what you showed... Well Done. May d Force b With U
One of the most important part of the philly shell is keeping your chin tucked in the POCKET between your shoulders, super safe on the side once you master that

That's one interesting aspect of boxing a bunch of "old-school" boxing wasn't written down. Boxing hasn't evolved it's been lost to time in some ways.
