    • @Vontux

      You can use information theory to determine if their vocalizations contain meaning even if we can't decode what that meaning is. If some sounds occur more often than others and when you graph the average use of each sound they make if a 45 degree angle appears on the graph, you have detected something that contains meaning. Apply this to your script, to dolphin noises, you name it the principle is the same.

    I can't believe you fine folks neglected to mention the other side effect of the gelada's digestion: They are spectacularly flatulent. Constantly blasting the bumhorn. Their existence is an utter cacophony not just of strange cries and wobbles, but of gaseous eruptions, like a roaming volcano of noisome emissions. Magnificent animals.

      Bloating from grazing vegetation. Methanogen bacteria breaks down cellulose (indigestible matter) releasing methane in the process = tooooot

    • @ValentinoB
      @ValentinoB ปีที่แล้ว +37

      It makes sense given that the gut microbiota metabolize the vegetation and the gaseous waste products produce the glorious -cacaphony- cacophony** that is seen to a lesser extent -unfortunately?- by their less hairy cousins, us humans.
      btw, "spectacularly flatulent" is a term that I will be now including in my everyday vernacular, thank you very much. However, I will admit that I am less fond of bumhorn, and more partial to the colloquial, "toot-flute".
      "Their existence is an utter cacophony not just of strange cries and wobbles, but of gaseous eruptions, like a roaming volcano of noisome emissions." - pure poetry!

      It really is uncanny sometimes how primate faces can make us instantly think of human emotions. Sometimes, even accurately, and sometimes not - to the detriment of the primate and the human both. Like how with us, smiling is a good thing - but clearly for the Gelada, showing the teeth isn't necessarily a happy face! But I agree, those eyebrows seem so expressive, even more so than a dog's eyes. Have to wonder what kind of deep thoughts they might have, up on their cliffs looking over the world.
