Thanks Brett for these awesome videos! I too, am brand new to the instrument, so this is very helpful. The tough part for me right now is training my brain to pick out and back. My hand keeps switching back to out, out, out! I'll get there! I'm not movin on , till I DO! Thanks again!

Thanks for the dulcimer lesson. I started playing dulcimer back in the 1990's, but never got too far along. I'm retired now and would love to pick it up again, but there are very few dulcimer players in my area now. Could I ask you what brand of dulcimer you're playing. Very nice sound and looks. The only one I have is a hand-made dulcimer by a retired school teacher who is now deceased. Sounds ok, but a little crude. Thought about getting a McSpadden , but not sure if they are even making dulcimers now. Thanks!

Thanks for this, Brett - it is really going to keep me busy haha! So strange how thinking of it as “joy to the world” somehow made it easier for me to follow the movements for some reason

Glad you are enjoying it! And yes, there is actually a whole idea of putting notes to words that make it easier to play! Thank you for taking the time to comment!

Great video. Have been messing with the mountain dulcimer for years. Little music background (good choir singer) but have been attending dulcimer festivals for years taking varied classes. At the time I bought my dulcimer, youtube was just beginning and no local mountain dulcimer teacher. Can see how this has handicapped me. It's the case of you don't know what you don't know. Others with more music knowledge in the dulcimer club I'm in have said B on bass string is the same as an open middle string. If I had seen your video years ago I would have known that. Would be interested in learning more!

I do notice that when I pick back and forth on the base string, my pick often hits the side of the dulcimer. I try to anchor my pinky on the side, which helps, but sometimes I just give up on the back stroke on the base string.
