This was actually me yesterday, as I was playing around with Subculture and decided to use mustard yellow and deep plum in contrast with my super pale skin..... then I tried to fix it by adding the green shimmer. 😂😂 it was so bad!

I also definitely think companies are way too focused on how things swatch versus making a usable product, and I think it has a lot to do with social media. Good swatches get people’s attention initially, and many people will buy a product sorely based off that instead of waiting and seeing how the product performs.
Totally agree. Invthe early days of yuotube beauty videos, girls used to literally try every coliour on their lid and show a picture ir do it live. Much more accurare portrayal of how eyeshadow looks on eyelid skin applied with a brush.
OMG! YES! they should just name their palettes "FALLOUT" I have NEVER used a brand with this much mess!!
I found putting the shimmer shades on top of a glitter glue (I used NYX’s), there wasn’t much fallout and the intensity of the shadow was exactly what I wanted. Maybe you could try that if you decide to revisit this palette in the future
I personally think you shouldn't have to use other products to make something work if that price tag is attached to it. Happy that it works for you like that though!
Ashley I agree yes it should hold it's own, but if you can take a 2$ glitter glue to enhance/get the most of your product wouldn't that be worth it? I normally use glitter glue with shimmers, it take 30 seconds per eye and really enhances the shadow and increases the longevity, no matter if it's drugstore or highend. Wetting your brush can also help if you don't want to use another product☺
Ashley My lids are slightly hooded so if I don’t put a glitter glue down with almost any shimmer shadow, it transfers into my crease
Deanna Renee nyx is the worst glitter glue. Lit is onr of the best. Clear liquid mixing mediums is literally game changing
GKGMEOW S. I personally like Nyx glitter glue but I don’t use it for like actual loose glitters, just for metallic/glittery pressed shadows and it works for me

OKAY.... I literally posted a review on this and everyone was so mad at me because I literally zoomed in and showed where celestial has NO pigment. In the pan it looks AMAZING on the eye it has absolutely no pigment. The campaign pictures where norvinas eyeshadow is literally neon is NOTHING like this palette. Also my purple and pink “matte” shades were not matte they’re shimmery and it looks awful in my crease. Glad to see you’re having the same issues.

Yeah, I got this palette because I expected it to look like a pastel/neon dream and instead I looked like I’d got a double black eye by the time I was done and I felt as dazed and confused as if someone punched me to give me the two black eyes :/

I'm just going to say it. ABH palettes are too hard to work with. Yes the concepts are great, the colors are beautiful.. BUT I have all these colors randomly from Mac or ColourPop or MUFE. And it doesn't take me ten years to blend them out. And when I do blend, they turn to the color I expect, because they don't muddy or oxidize. The only ABH palette I like is Modern Renaissance. I don't understand why more people don't feel the same way. Side note: their single pans are glorious. HOW IS THAT POSSIBLE? No clue.
If you take out the purples it’s basically soft glam. I’m in the minority too, I’m not into this palette. Subculture was so wow and different and they’re past two palettes have been so, predictable.
I know right 😭 after Subculture I was so exited to throw my money at ABH for their creative palette stories but the last two I am forcing myself to like and see looks with while Subculture I fell hard in love and can still come up with endless looks
Same. I feel like the soft glam was practically a muted version of the MR and I figured that most of those shades I already have in other palettes. I'm gonna pass on this one as well and if I want to create a purple look, I'll get a colorful palette that has multiple colors or just get single purple shadows. This palette doesn't do it for me, considering there so many repeat shades from their previous palettes.

honestly i think the "soul" shade that everyone is obsessed with and has been using is one of the most unflattering colors in makeup. i feel like it looks like an off gray shade and like it wants to be blue but it really cant be. like it's not even a good periwinkle shade because i love those kind of almost watercolor type shades but this specific one is just.. off?

Shanae Green-I know.. It looks so pretty in the pan and swatches. But I don’t like any look I’ve seen on TH-cam that used this pallet... I was this close to ordering it the day it came out! Glad I didn’t.

What I don't get, is why people are calling this a purple palette. There's TWO/THREE actual purple shades. As someone that loves purple(brown eyed gal here), I was left wanting more. I have this and I do love it, find it easy to use and love the 'soul' shade (sorry sam), but wish they had left out like 3 of the browns and actually made this a purple palette with a bright,deep,matte purple, a soft light shimmer (think MUG backlight), and a taupe grey purple. Hey, a gal can dream right?
Also, I think a lot of people are having issues with shades that they assume are matte that actually aren't a true matte. Love,soul,and base are not actually matte and I think it's throwing people off if that even makes sense. Bonus: this looks stunning with stila 'baci' and Mac whirl liner. Great review sam, much appreciated on the honesty, Thats why we all 💘 ya,girl. It's ok to not like purple, it gets a bit bruisey on most peepers.
You know what my view on this palette is and why I didn’t want to buy it.
Their photos.. they over edited their looks especially the looks Norvina did, she’s literally wearing this vibrant hot pink and purple eye look but once they released the palette to me it looked muted and “dull”
And THEN I saw reviews and I was like yep NEXT.

This was super helpful. I've watched a few videos now and I'm left with the impression that I just don't need it. I actually wanted a lot more purple out of this palette and there really, REALLY is not enough to make it unique. There is so many neutral shades in there that I can easily get from other palettes and I KNOW I already have those purples in another brand like INGLOT. Thanks for the review. :)
Honestly, I fricken love this palette. I got it for my birthday on Sunday and I’ve used it every day since and I’ve played around with it and have done several different looks with it. I have 5 ABH palettes and honestly this is my favorite. I’m obsessed with this palette so much 💜💜💜 I’ve found that Soul and Love work best when they’re not used together. I know they look like they should be complimentary colors, but I think they work and look best when you don’t use the two together. That was my only issue with the palette because I was so excited to use those two colors together. But I still love this so much and out of the 26 palettes I have, this is definitely a top five faves

Ya I have to agree with you about how colours that don’t seem like they would be weird to blend end up being weird to blend. Like when everyone had a problem with Subculture I didn’t see a difference between subculture and Modern Renaissance like I feel as tho all her eyeshadow palettes have the same issue with fall out and some being super patchy or super weird to blend certain colours together?? But I also really enjoy her palettes just I hate how some colours are iffy to work with and can’t blend into other colours
I loved the ‘two looks’ idea and the reasoning behind it! It was so good to see both the look that we are ‘expecting’ to see from the palette and the look the that you would usually do. Love it!
I sent the palette back...way to much fall out, and the color just didnt transfer the same on my eyes as the color looked in the pan...the soft glam is way better formula for sure

I've watched at least 5 youtubers review this...have trouble, and patchiness right in front of my eyes and,in a panic say"this would be a beautiful smokey eye, let's just add some black from another palette and smoke it out!" All the problems you had, I had too! I was so excited for this but it was terrible. I used at least 5 or 6 different shades on my eyes (blending, darker ones, and shimmers of course) and once I was done, it looked like all the same color! Didn’t blend well, shades were patchy, and it just didn’t work ☹️ I was really sad but I’m returning it.
I think you’re so right about companies trying to make shadows that swatch beautifully but don’t perform the same on the eye! I honestly don’t even pay attention to swatches without an eye look included anymore.
Both looks turned out so beautiful! I do have to say this palette is a purple lovers dream! I am excited to try this one out! I do with that they were pressed a little harder because the fallout can be such a waste! Always love your reviews

I’ve been eyeballing this palette for awhile but I don’t know, maybe it’s the color story putting me off? but at the same time I look at those mattes and go wow I can work with that. maybe I just have too many eyeshadow palettes to begin with and need to back off for a minute lmao I could always wait for it to be on sale for me to grab... hmmmmmm.

I'm on a tight budget at the moment, so when i saw the palette was being released and i wasnt gonna have the money i was pretty sad. Now that i watched this, i can definitely wait to get it!
i'm so glad that a larger beauty youtuber agrees that the shadows in the modern renaissance can be hard to blend and get real muddy. when i finally tried the palette for myself, i was so confused as to why everyone hyped it up for so long
I feel like there is a systemic way and specific order that i can use ABH shadows that allow them to blend together, but if I use them in a different order or use different shadows together, it looks like a damn shit show. That's discouraging when you're trying to get multiple looks out of a palette.

****Sam, I feel like I'm the attempt to be super pigmented shadows, ABH is kind of ruining them. There is such thing as too pigmented which is what I believe the problem is with these palettes. The kick up in the pan, the fallout, the muddiness and blending issues... These are problems that shouldn't accompany a higher end palette. If anything they should be blendable, buildable and pigmented without the dustyness. I'm over ABH palettes.***
O have 3 abh palettes and I hate them. I bought them all the same day. I have modern Renaissance, soft glam and Jackie Aina. I gave my makeup revolution dupes of the first two and I regret it bc I liked the formula a Lot more. The only abh palette I wanna buy is the mini norvina ones, because they're 9 pan which I LOVE, and they are nothing like typical abh formula. The original norvina palette has colours that I love and I'm tempted to buy it but I hate abh formula, I hate it.

I actually really loved the palette! Im sorry it didnt work out for you😟 My shimmers were a little crumbly as well but I found wetting the brush and applying the shadow worked for me really well!

It's almost like The Modern Renaissance palette was a fluke. Made us think all the eyeshadows there after would be amazing and we're all discovering with every palette release that, no, it's just bad eyeshadow. And now, we have better palettes and eyeshadow than even MR making it seem that MR was actually never that good.
Mandy G I agree with this 💯%!!! Not only are there better palettes, but there are better palettes that are much cheaper. For instance, you can get a Colourpop palette for under $20 that blends like a dream and has metallics that are super vibrant, buttery, and sparkly. It just doesn't make sense anymore to spend $40+ dollars for a subpar palette. The drugstore brands have really stepped up, and it's giving the high end brands a run for their money.
I disagree, the prism palette was amazing, some of the best and most bendable shadows I own, soft glam was also great and personally norvina has worked very well for me and others. It sucks that it didn't work out for sam, but most reviews I've seen have been positive and sam gave prism and soft glam great reviews, so I don't think it's fair to say MR was a fluke, especially since ABH single shadows are also considered some of the best

Purple is *basically* a neutral... I think maybe more so than the super warm reds, oranges, yellows:) buuuut I get that warm/neutrals look amazing on so many people and skin tones

ABH had such a good formula for Modern Ren so why would they change it 😫 don’t fix what’s not broken
Emily Catherine I believe that they’ve said that this formula is the same as MR, but certain colours are going to be trickier either way or need to be pressed differently for the same payoff. I think that’s why the colour Soul for instance has shimmer in it which I’ve seen people mention in their reviews. a bit of pearl helps shadows stay creamier, and I imagine Soul would have a lot of white pigment in it to get that periwinkle colour, white pigment makes it chalkier, which is where the shimmer comes into play. SO even if the formula is the same, small things like that based on the colours themselves are going to make them more finicky vs a brown shade for instance.
I think the purple look you did looked beautiful on you. As well as the neutral look you did. I just got my Norvina and I love it. To each their own.

Kathleen Klimek This is very old school but I go to my Makeup Geek singles and Colourpop Super Shock shadows for purples. Makeup Geek Mesmerized and Vintage, and Colourpop Bill and Issa are some of my favorite shades!

I've thought the same thing about brands formulating based on good swatches instead of considering more on how well it applies to lids. I think consumers & influencers have put swatches on too big of a pedestal. I dont care how it swatches, dont even need to see them tbh. I use to, but I've slowly realized they mean nothing. I want to see how it applies to eyes. So instead of brands doing live swatches or even clips of them on IG, how about start showing an artist applying it to an actual eye lid? Now that would get my attention. But arm swipes? Meh😐

I honestly don’t get the hype over Anastasia eyeshadow pallets. They’re not that pretty, pan size is tiny, there’s always fallout, the colors don’t blend together well or don’t go together concept wise, and the shimmers are so weak. It’s just frustrating to see so many people review this pallet and say it’s amazing when it’s just eh.

it’s fine i dont find any of that true for me at all. Its my favorite formula and i never have a problem. However i dont think its necessary to use 12 shades per eye lol
m b I think the fact that they’re also so inconsistent with pallet production is another problem we run into, where some people get “good” pallets and other get a “bad” batch. But everyone is different and will have different opinions on formula!

This palette looked so ugly to me. The colours just didn’t look like they would blend nicely together and for a purple toned palette there was a severe lack of purple... The only purple toned palette that has ever come close to having enough workable purple tones was the Inglot Keilidh palette, and that’s been discontinued 😒 Someone plz make a good purple palette

I couldn’t agree more about the ABH shadows, specifically the pinks. For years, I never understood how people used Modern Renaissance and it looked SO GOOD on them. I never use the red or pink shades because they fade INCREDIBLY fast and look like mud 15 minutes later.
