Wild seeing DK show up in a WF of this caliber. Almost 25 years since Melee released, but seeing a top DK player is like suddenly having a new character patched into the game.
The unique thing about Mang0 in his almost 20 years of competitive Melee is he has fought the top players of wacky characters nobody really uses several times aMSa (Yoshi), Axe (Pikachu), Hbox (puff), Abate (Luigi), Armada (Peach), etc.. so it makes sense a top level DK isn’t going to break him easily like a lot of the other new gen less experienced players. Great match
mang0 has never played against June or really any top level DK before besides i believe Quang at TBH last year. But yeah he and Armada we're always amazing at destroying low to mid tiers and he's seemingly only become better at it with every year.
k so i havent watched melee in a hot minute, so my apologies for not being up to date on this stuff, but wtf is dk doing in winners finals at a tournament as stacked as supernova? 😂 huge props to junebug for pushing this character to the limit and beyond man
We all thinkjng the same thing. A few months ago junebug busted out the DK and beat magi I think, and ever since he’s been on an insane tear. First axe winning a supermajor, then Aklo taking names like kodorin with his link, then Amsa and his yoshi being top 2 in the world, now DK. Even now I’m thinking about how chudat was top 2 a few years ago
So basically in the past year and a half DK has gone from low tier to in discussion of being Samus / Luigi level due to a mix of an underground DK optimisation project in the mid 2010's, Slippy and DK gaining actual reps with 3 of them being top 50 players. Of note the DK's have: Bullied every marth player expect zain Beaten serveral top 20 level players to win regionals Created the biggest seeding upset in the history of the game (bing vs cody) Forced some players to counterswap DK to try and win Overcome serveral seemingly horrible matchups (Sheik is the problem rn). Were kinda waiting on the "super DK" to be born but Junebug is provding impressive results.
It must've been emotional for Junebug, to be playing the best player thus far in Melee, the Goat, the Kid, and having the audience cheer more for HIM than the king of melee, in his own region, at one of the biggest supermajors in the world. That MEANS something yk.
I think if u give the masses some time; this tournament may represent a huge change for mango. His play this tournament was different than it has ever been imo. He was…. More methodical? More tight? More strict? More oppressive? More understanding? More knowledgeable? I dunno, you could look to individual things like his tight ledgeplay and mixups or sum like that; but overall, i feel like something has changed. He still looks like a ‘feeling’ player, but now theres a new, cold, logical level. His gamin’ this tournament was the most excellent I think Ive ever seen him play. It feels like every decision he made all tournament had a purpose. What a spectacle from the man who we though showed us everything he had to offer; and everything we thought there was to love abt him. What a cool guy
While I definitely was cheering for Junebug, I definitely could see that too. Mango played extremely calm and confident. He clearly studied up hard on DK and all his opponents. This finals was definitely a showing of skill but more-so a showing of preperation. Mango put in the work before it even came to this and because of that he won. I definitely think Junebug is an amazing player and I really hope they keep working on it because DK definitely has huge potential and he does too.
imo saying “he was sweating” is an overstatement. Junebug is taking DK places don’t get me wrong but winning 3-1 I don’t think you can say mang0 sweat, plus he not having a single DK match since 2015 and looking how j has improved that meta it just shows how top players adapt to matches, but I do agree mang0 was locked in, the pressure of “I cannot loose to a low tier char”

its the player that crafts the character junes dk has such potential still, what this feels like is 2 players of immense skills, but one has the most well crafted character and the other something thats still in progress.
The craziest thing to me is that the concept of Junebug taking a set off of Mango before he picked up DK was pretty much unthinkable. Easy win for Mango every time. The odds are obviously still stacked against June, but I can definitely see a world where he wins a set like this. Mind blowing!
A major, yes, a supermajor? Never. Aklo has won a major with Link, but he'll never win a supermajor either. The characters in that sect of the tier list just have too many weaknesses. If Melee SD Remix replaced Melee, we'd see those characters win regularly, cuz the mod fixes the areas those characters struggle in neutral against the top tiers.
@@nahor88 People said the same thing about Yoshi. Be a non-believer all you'd like, but the time of the Apes is here and I don't think anybody truly knows how high they can fly.
