- We spoke to three Masons at the United Grand Lodge of England, the governing body of Freemasonry in England. The United Grand Lodge of England has around 200,000 members meeting in over 7,000 Lodges throughout the country. We asked the three Masons about how they were introduced to the secretive society, what their initiation ceremonies were like, and what perks they receive as members.

Decades ago, my innocent husband once saw a quick ad on our TV telling Free Mason’s about a local picnic.
He was sure it was our builder, who just happened to have the last name, “Mason”. I had to laugh my ass off before I explained who the Free Mason’s were. We still laugh about it now.
My uncle was once a freemason. In 1950 or thereabouts he emigrated to Canada and when he got himself settled down he introduced himself to the lodge. However, he was told that he would have to go through the whole ritual again, because of coming from another sovereign state.
He told the lodge, in no uncertain terms, that he didn't travel thousands of miles across the pond just to play their stupid games. From that moment on until his death in 1984, he had nothing more to do with them. Was probably better off as a result.

So the initiation was something that was involved and complex and maybe unsettling? Because if these initiations are so wonderfully memorable, he probably didn't enjoy the part we don't hear about.
The rituals and introductions were probably not necessarily for him, as much as for the members in the lodge. He may have known about freemasonry, but the members did not know about him. By going through those introductory activities, he could get to know the members on a more personal level and they could get to know about him. Moreover, they likely had little way of authenticating his level of activity in membership in another group. They may have had people come up on a regular basis saying they were such and such from such and such a group, and back then before the internet they had little way of authenticating that claim. So they likely wanted him to go through their own Lodge initiation so that they could both learn about him as well as authenticate his knowledge and proficiency. It was probably less about humiliation than getting to know each other better and authenticating him.

My Dad had an accountant who was a mason, and he stole my dads savings. He was eventually arrested by the police whose inspector was a mason. The prosecuting counsel was a mason and the judge was a mason. The accountant was found guilty and was ordered to pay my father back and walk free. The accountant was penniless as the money had been invested overseas. You can guess what my opinion of these merchants is.

I'm a freemason in the U.S. it is done a little differently here, but at the core the organizations are covering the same ground. These kinds of things are always entertaining to me, because the semi-dark music plays, and there's talk about mysticism and deep secrets, etc. People get hung up on the mysticism. You know what masonry is? A bunch of guys who enjoy being together, who enjoy the beautiful symbology of the fraternity, which helps them be humble, decent citizens, who take on efforts within their communities and regions to help make things better for others.
My dad used to hint that he wanted me to join the fraternity, and I perpetually blew it off, zero interest. Then I moved to a new location, there was a lodge in town, I got curious, so I joined. And the first time I met the guys, I immediately felt I had just made a group of friends, because I had. It isn't a group that will dig its clutches into you. The gentlemen you saw putting on all the regalia, they've decided to get more deeply involved, so more of a time commitment than others. Many members never take on an officer role. You can go neck deep in charitable work, you can go ankle deep, same with learning/memorizing/studying ritual work. It is up to you. For me, my decision was if I was going to do this, I wasn't going to live on the periphery of it, clinging barely to it in a social way, I was going to do it. Be an active participant. Why not?
The men you meet are fascinating. We have doctors, business owners, 2nd shift workers, military officers, cable installers, financial planners, people involved with film production, etc., involved in our lodge. We would never have otherwise met, yet we are friends, all on the same level, and it is thanks to this fraternity. We don't go around bumping our super-secret rings into each other with a nod and a wink and surreptitiously open doors for one another professionally. We're just like-minded men who are curious, thoughtful, and introspective, who enjoy connecting in this great fraternity. The secrets that are made so much of are really just secrets of rituals, primarily the ones associated with bringing new brothers of the fraternity through those three initiation ceremonies the gent touched on at the very end of the video. If there weren't a few secrets of ritual, there would be zero intrigue, and that's no fun. But I will tell you this as an absolute. There is absolutely no hazing, hurting, humiliating, no harm of any kind that falls to a man in masonry. Does not happen. I would not be a member if it did. I'd have pitched it a long time ago. You are among friends, immediately and always.
So, what do we do? Well, we do reinforce the little life lessons found in the rituals for sure. Sometimes through ceremony, sometimes through a speaker. If you are interested in public speaking, want to present on a topic, there's always an opportunity. I've gotten pretty good at public speaking. Lodges also support charitable acts in their communities - raising money for scholarships, supporting little league teams, providing funds to food banks, etc. Our Lodge has a program that has grown enormously, providing loaves of bread to food pantries across an enormous geographic region. Will you see a square and compass on some kids' soccer uniform? Maybe. But the thing is, masons don't go around thumping their chest over their works. It is usually done pretty quietly. We've got a group of young professionals who have been joining our lodge lately, they are seeing it as a platform through which to give back into the community in which they live, that has supported them.
The primary beef about the fraternity I hear is religious-based, and that's because the Bible is used within ritual, and the fraternity has its basis in some of the story elements found there. Most masons would probably describe themselves as Christian, but that is not a mandate by any stretch. There are Jewish and muslim brothers. There are members who simply believe there is a higher power. The fraternity is not intended to serve as a religion nor a substitute for one, and in fact, members are encouraged to be steadfast in the faith of their choosing. There is a universality of respect toward the religious belief systems of the world. I am a Christian - I am a mason. I do NOT take my religious teachings from my lodge.
Once in a great, great while I'll respond to a post about masonry, but usually don't because the responses get kind of out there. I'm happy to answer questions, but no, I'm not going to compromise any of our ritual stuff because that's the secret sauce, right? But usually there are people responding who've seen one too many documentaries with sinister music on the history channel, and they come at this with swords drawn, and I just do not have the patience for it. So, if you have some questions, I'm happy to respond, but if you start trying to tie me into the design of the dollar bill, or the layout of Washington D.C., or how awful it is to use the Bible to make a promise, or how terrible it is to make use of the Bible period, or to acknowledge that there are good people out there who may come from different religions, or you think my association with the fraternity makes me an automatic expert on the Morgan Affair, or I know the secret nose-twitch of Harry Truman or anything else like that, I'm probably not going to have much to say. Well....I take that back, I can be pretty clever.

I’m curious though because my great grandfather was a mason and it’s drawn me to the Brotherhood and I’ve been wanting to join but I’m having trust issues which might sound silly but you could understand with all the negative portrayals the brotherhood gets. I read everything you said but I need more info to get me out of this doubt. @@johnstewart8825 Fire away and I'll answer as best I can. My dad and grandfather were both masons, not sure about my great grandfather. There are a few areas where you could have some trust issues with this, so I'll take a shot even in advance of your questions. One would be about the ritual stuff. Really, the only ritual stuff that happens of consequence is when somebody is joining a lodge or advancing through the degrees. Those are longer nights than a normal meeting by the way. You are blindfolded for part of it, there's a weird little get-up that you wear, but everything about that relates directly to symbology that is later explained. When you are blindfolded, you have a person who has you by the arm so you aren't stumbling around, and you are certainly never put in a dangerous situation. I would never, ever, ever have joined an organization that did anything mean or harmful or dangerous with any of its members. Everybody will joke about goats and stuff, there's nothing truly outlandish like that. It is just a ritual sequence that has been basically unchanged for hundreds of years. I always thought it was pretty cool to go through the same stuff that some of our presidents have and many of our founding fathers.
If the trust has to do with "did I just join an organization that will never leave me alone now that it has its clutches in me?"....nope. You haven't. If you participate for a while but end up saying guys, this isn't for me, and you walk, they'll say they're sorry to see you go, but good luck and if you change your mind the door remains open. But your phone won't be ringing off the hook, there won't be guys waiting outside your front door, etc. You aren't told you have to cut off relationships with friends or family or anything like that.
If you think back a 150 years or so, you'll get a picture of the practical aspects of this thing. Small towns were forming out of farming communities, and it was a time when there were zero social programs. No welfare, no social security, no medicaid, no nothing. So, if Jed died on the farm and left his wife and kids behind, they were screwed. Completely and totally screwed. But in a fraternity like this, you had some support. A community of men who stood together to take care of one another. Guys who could step in to help repair equipment, or keep an eye on the kids as they grew into adults, or help the widow out as needed. The men shared that obligation to one another. Today that obligation remains, but life insurance is a lot more effective at helping a widow through the tough times than a bunch of guys offering to repair a fence. Still, the bond remains. Our lodge has had a few guys get ill with COVID - so the response was do you need anybody to make a grocery run for you? Shovel the drive? Pick up meds for the family?

Mind you, he only lives 25 minutes from hospital, in a country area with little traffic, and had over 4 hours before Lodge commenced. Gee it must take a long time to put on a dinner suit for Lodge. His obsession with Lodge caused rifts in the family, even cost him his marriage. Then he ends up living de facto with a new woman. That is against Lodge rules too isn't it? Living with another woman whilst being married to another still. So not all Masons are squeaky clean like they say. I have met many and some are downright hypocrites. Say one thing and practice another.

I have a question… was Baden Powell a Freemason? My boys were scouts from age 5-12 and my father was a SeaScout until he was 15. I now wonder if there was a connection between the Scout Movement and Freemasons.

They may call themselves masons but they are not. I did my apprenticeship with my grandfather and started, after school and the weekends and holidays, at age 11 in the forge learning how to make and temper chisels and rakes and feathers. I was weedy when I started but filled out over the 2 years in the forge. Then I learned how rock sits in a quarry and how to recognise the upside of a block (very important to fit it into a building in the correct orientation), then I learned the basic shapes of cube, triangle and circle; the use of measures, how to use proportion. I did 7 years and passed as Journeyman. I keep being invited to join, I tell them all 'NO'.
I regard them as overgrown kids because children like to hide and have secrets.
There were proper masonic lodges once but they have been taken over by the play actors.
As far as I know there is only one lodge purely for real stone masons and that is not mentioned in public, they keep their privacy.

Why would you need to join a “society” or order to be a productive, contributor to your community. Seems a little extra. Volunteer at a mission, get involved at your church or have a neighborhood food drive. Parading around in fancy aprons is more of a pat on ones back and part of a show than actually helping people but that just my opinion. When you help people you don’t need recognition for it from some fraternity.
@Erik in Minnesota what you suggest is fine for some people. Some prefer to do it in a group. Some prefer the "team" or the Regiment" or the "club" way of doing things. You'll find a lot of Freemasons are those who have served with the armed forces or the Police Force. It's the cameraderie that drives them.
That said, Freemasonry isn't just about charity (although that's a big part of it) there is another big aspect of it that you simply won't get by having food drives. One of the major parts of it is for moral self-improvement. A Masonic ceremony is like a two act play and the purpose of it is to present the Candidate with food for thought. what he does with that, is up to him, but we like to think that the average Freemason is a good man who will always try to make himself in to a better man.
Same reason people join Tennis clubs and Golf Clubs etc... mutual interest.

You get to know people. Something rarely mentioned is the memory work that's required. Perhaps it's because there's concern for scaring people way, but I'm convinced it helps a person to keep their mind sharp. Sadly, there's really not much secrecy anymore. The Internet is partially at fault, but before that, I was able to go to the library and find books with all the information. I've always felt that secrecy was just used to make it special. Shout something from the rooftops and no one will pay attention, whisper to a dining companion in a restaurant and everyone will try to listen in. Clearly, it arose from the ancient times when there was need to organize the workers by their abilities.

Something on the scale of getting a carpenter from your Lodge in to fix your garden fence is perfectly ok. You'll know the joiner is a decent man, but for example, if you think you're going to get your fence fixed for free, that would be forbidden. You'd pay the normal going rate for the work.

Lastly he explains the third degree as impressing on us the importance of our mortality and how we should make the best of it while we are here.
What he doesn’t explain is that ALL of this ceremonial teaching and the entire goal of Freemasonry is to gain admittance into the celestial lodge above where the Great Architect presides (in other words…get in to Heaven).
These erroneous teachings of Freemasonry begin with the false claim of their involvement with the building of King Solomon’s Temple and continue with the intermingling of pagan religious teachings and the Word of God to make it appear as if they have true knowledge of Salvation (in other words…get in to Heaven).

Is There really a belief in this Jahbulon? I can get on board with "The Grand Architect of the Universe" as that is a Title not a name and has been and is used by biblical scholars and in Christian religious text. But this Jahbulon if it was true would be blasphemous. It would be pagan if it was an amalgamation of different gods names. Or if it is just an alternative name for god it is certainly not one that is recognised like Yahweh of Jehovah and I turn would be "taking the Lord's name in vain". Could a high ranking Freemason please give me some insight on this? I have family in masonry but only Blue lodge level. I've been tossing it up since I was 14-15. I'm now 27. Please can a mason here give me some guidance on this one? As a Christian who loves history and ritual, tradition and knowledge masonry certainly does interest me. Just as Church and Christian history does. But i wouldn't feel right if I go through it all all the degrees and years of my life to only find out at the very end it goes against all my beliefs.
