Def keep it. Keep building it. Keep being budget minded with it. I found your channel because of this build and would like to follow with a similar build of my own. It’s nice to have someone trying things out, showing failures and successes, and just rocking with a “cheap” rig. I’ll stick around regardless of what you do, you’re ingenuity and sense of humor alone are worth it. I think most would agree, you’ve come this far with it, keep going. Break it, build it, test it, repeat. It’s all good content for us!!
I have no advice on what to do with the rig choice.... but what I can say is, I've been following you on most of your youtube journey and I have loved every minute of it! Please don't give up and keep the content coming! I've said it before and I mean it, this channel will blow the fuck up. With all of you builds, and the adventures of you and carter... this is definitely going to go far. Happy wheelin!
I personally think keep it. Tons of channels with over the top high dollar builds. I think more people are interested in a real down to earth rig and relatable mods.
I fully understand my 3rd gen 4Runner build is getting out of hand due to the short period of time that I've had it and what I've invested in it. I could have bought a v8 4th gen by now. If I was you i would build it from Salvage Yard parts. Im not sure what state you live in but your fab work is amazing and if you would have a week off work and save up and find all the parts you need that can save you money. I got a buddy who had a fox body mustang and he used a salvage yard LS and made over 1200whp before he sold it for a supra. Love the content I hope this helps you got this!.
Honestly, keep it how it is for a while. More trails and trips with it would be awesome! I got my 98 2nd owner my dad the first, and even though it’s warn and chipped, it will hit 400k miles soon. It is the perfect width and size for a vehicle. Maybe a 3d printer would be cool and then replicate some common shity parts; like front pull out cup holders, air vents, etc!!!
alu block LS! the IFS its a beast, although you def need to bring extra CV's with the 37s..with the wheelbase bigger than 37s arent really necessary. something you could focus on is making it all flat-belly setup, or adjusting the garbage rear geo to a 3 link/4 link with f150 tank. your vids are making me want to post videos again, keep the content up
I’m in the same boat with my 3rd gen cause I already have a decent built 1st gen…but I think I’m gonna just do the TG 3 link set up and Chevy 63s in the rear and a taco box that’ll save me $10k, even tho it’s not one tons it’ll still be cool and fun!! Love the channel bro and would love to wheel with ya sometime
You could sell that thing for decent coin right now but I’d keep wheeling it. Go on adventures bro. You don’t need to pour more money into right now if it’s solid as it sits. Maybe a video where you build skids. Maybe an interior roll bar system. And that’s just off the top of my head. I’m glad the algorithm of TH-cam brought me here honestly. Makes me wanna tackle gears on my third gen tacoma.
I came for the LS swap content and stayed for the Toyota content. Combining those two would be crazy but I understand you trying to build longevity on TH-cam. I'll be watching either way!... How bout some more of that smoke show at the beginning?? FOR THE BOYS 😬
Honda K24 turbo and a northwest fab eco-crawler set up dude, keep it IFS. But at the end of the day what ever you do I know you’re gonna nail it due to the attention to detail you have with the project you work on. Keep up the good work.
Wheeling and build content has been consistently great so keep it up if you can. When you started the build series with this you said you wanted to see what it could do on IFS. You took it on the Rubicon once? I say take it on some other CA trails to find the weak points and get some more content. Deer Valley, Slick Rock, Snake Lake, Barrett Lake, Hellhole, Brewer Lake, Swamp Lake, Coyote Lake, Dusy Ershim, Dare I say...Fordyce. Pack a couple spare CVs and some inner and outer tie rod ends and get after it. Maybe the next step is a budget long travel setup? Also, keep being the down to earth relatable and humble human you have been so far on the channel.
Man ever since I found your channel (because of the 4runner) I have went back and watched all your videos and love them. Maybe because I am also into all the same things it seems your into as far as fab, slammed wagons and sleds, 4x4s, trail cruising etc.. Honestly I'm hooked on your channel because of the work you do and what your into and you are good on camera as far as being real (do not stop being yourself) but I think if you kept it you could continue the trail videos, adding more things to the 4runner, adding trail camping stuff to it, anything really, (could do a roof rack build tutorial) but ultimately up to you. If you don't want to sell it don't, if you do to start another project do it. Ill still watch for sure.🤘
LS swap that biaatch! Then break parts! You could do a raffle for it. Billy from SRC does it all the time. They just raffled off a fox body mustang. He’s had great success doing it.
Keep it and build a RCLT for 3rd gen 4run/1st gen taco since Marlin didn't include us. Markets open for the steering upgrade and high clearance LT plus you've got the skills.
The nice part of building yourself is having what you want how you want it but at what cost. I’m working on a 99 4Runner myself and have decided to keep it mild for a family trail runner and save up for another project that will be maybe over the top but will be my CRAWLER I’ve always wanted. Either way you go I enjoy your videos.
If i was you i would be hard pressed to sell that thing. I would probably just keep it as it. I think it is in a perfect spot for a trail rig. The older i get the more i enjoy comforts of a full body rig with ac lol. I have a first gen toyota and a XJ (which is also an old turd but has ac and full body haha). I find myself going out more in the xj cause it is more comfortable then the old 83 truck, esp with the kids. Id keep it and invest money in another rig that would be easy to get to the monster goals ya want. In the end, its your choice to make. If you do raffle it off, you got one ticket sold here haha. Also as far as content, bruh the stuff you have in that shop you work in could last you forever! Idk where ya work, but there is always cool shit in the background. Good luck homie, always love your videos and the content.
You already have a rock crawler. A simple solid axle swap and engine swap would generate plenty of content. Doesn’t have to cost loads, and would appeal to more people (with driveway swap skills etc). Keep it streetable on 35s/37s. Maybe switch to coil overs in the front, otherwise a leaf sprung front can work plenty fine on a full bodied rig. Build it for camping, touring, winter wheeling, mild rubicon etc. Meanwhile, some more content on your crawler would be nice!
Definitely keep it!! 3rd gens are super popular and a classic for sure.. build it and create awesome content through out the process and more content camping with the fam!!
Hang on to that baby, and see what it’ll do! I like the IFS setup, I say maybe put in a TacoBox, and see if it’ll hang with those +50k rigs on the tough stuff!
I’ll say the best thing is to keep it and just do a SAS with leaf spring and yota front solid axles so that way you’re not starting all over. To do a full blown out rig, I would save it for a buggy or something in that nature…. for a full body daily rig just keep it simple….
There is no way I could tell someone to spend 15-25 thousand on a 3rd Gen. I couldn’t even justify that on my ‘21 Tacoma. I say find another 3rd Gen, crazy low miles like 100-150, and start a new build. I’d love to see it.
What's your end goal with it? What kind of a rig do you want it to be? SAS beater crawler? or something less built (dare I say "overland-ish")? I say keep it on 37's for a while and make more content with it out using it. Put it through it's paces and prove what the platform can do with IFS. Throw a locker in the front & dual cases and hurt some feelings out on the trail. I love seeing "underbuilt" rigs like that that keep up with rigs that were just dropped at a shop with a blank check. It's pretty wild how far a double locked a 1g taco/3g t4r will get you. Let alone on 37's! Maybe get some RCV's for the front!
You could build it up semi cheap..you could uz swap it semi cheap to fix the no power problem and then do leafs and SD or fj80 axles or make your own link setup..plenty of other youtubers do that rather than buying a kit, Matt's offroad recovery, fab rats, bleeping heep just to name a few...you already have fab skills so all you'd have to do if figure out the link geometry witch probably wouldn't be that hard with as many guys on 3rd gen 4runner mafia that have done it....just a thought
I'm in the same boat. Got a 97 4Runner with the typical 2-3" lift; IFS front, rear locked, dual cases and 34's. Also have a Waggy 44 axle waiting to be SAS'd into it, with plans for 37's, but debating on whether it's worth it with a rusting out body and 285K on the ODO. Or I could dump that money into my 3rd Gen Tacoma and build a solid rig on 37's. decisions, decisions...
Noooooo!!! Please don’t get rid of the 3rd gen!!! Honestly I think this is the best looking runner ever made, that’s why I own one. And there is really not much 3rd gen content out there. At least keep it and just drive it. That’s the beauty for me so far is it’s good in stock form. I really want to make mine a dual case ifs rig since it hasn’t been done much. Prolly for good reason lol but this is my journey I guess also mine is rusty af like holes in the frame bought from Minnesota for like 2500 years ago lol not sure I’ll ever get rid of mine. Also 5speed 4.10 gears sucks ass in the Rockies where I live now. U have helped me get stoked on my build again!!
Put a 270 batwing awning and sell it to an up and coming over lander for $20,000. Don’t take a loss on it! I’d sell and start another interesting build
You could continue to enjoy it as is, cheap simple leaf SAS, I’d buy a sweatshirt if you decided to raffle it. I think I could speak for a lot of us that were loving watching you drive the hell out of this thing as ifs. 20k+ is a stressful amount of money to any average Joe and a lot of commitment.
Whatever you do, keep putting out content. All of us here love the vids. If you sell it, maybe start over with a first gen Sequoia. Bigger engine, more room inside, same shitty gas mileage but less strain on your wallet to acquire. Not a lot of guys putting out quality fab content building those up. I’m gonna keep watching whatever you choose to do!
I’d like too see more of the 4Runner as is or slowly build by building some cheaper wheelers to flip for fast cash . Maybe budget build a gmt400 BB with SD axles lots of trimming bob the bed then flip or maybe even early ford obs 1 ton BB already has the Dana 60 front . Either way I’ll keep following along I like your style
Wow! This is a real interesting decision time wave! You can do an engine swap or supercharge it. There are so many possibilities! There are long travel options too! Craziness! 🤘
Dude I hear your dilemma. I'm sort of there with my YJ build, the cost to finish taking it to the 'next level' is more that I can easily rationalize. But for you building this thing is gonna create tons of killer content. Which is what you want right? And at the end of the day, with tons, links, and an ls swap that thing is gonna be badass, and wheeling it is gonna create even more killer content. The possible foreshadowing at the start of this video could be an issue though... Is she down with you building the runner?
I think you should keep it and like others have said with the simple down to earth mods/build. Once you’ve reached your point of not feeling it then sell it for a new adventure?
Skip the high dollar 4wheel underground kit. Build it yourself. Getting the geometry right isn’t a big deal. Busted knuckle has the best videos for designing your own 3 link/4link. Me and my 21 year old did just that. It’s low and handles great. As far as the 3.4 if it’s not enough power pick up a super charger.
Definitely an engine swap candidate. I have a 01 and I love it but it needs more power and it leaves it open for sas latter. Do something weirder than a ls tho, I dont think that will draw attention. A jz or a honda K something?
If I'm honest, I think you should probably leave it as it is. At least to me, I don't see that much reason to go with a "good platform" if you are getting to the point of solid axle and drivetrain swapping. Once you've swapped out the motor, axles, suspension, brakes, ecu, transmission, and on and on, there's no platform left. The toyota soul in the truck is in the factory reliability of that setup. Once its all been swapped, it's not necessarily less reliable, but its YOU reliable. Personally I don't see that much point in doing that to a working truck. It isn't the end of the world because Toyota reliability is mostly expired on the 3rd gens anyway, but I'd always prefer something with no life left in it turned into a crawler than one that's still chugging along. When I clicked on the video, honestly I thought you were going to say you blew the engine or something, which is pretty remarkable on the 3.4. As for the benefit to the channel, I wouldn't go to something newer. I think the 3rd gen has so much more character than the 4th. I think custom work is the most interesting to be honest, and unique stuff is going to catch more eyes. To be fair, I am biased. I'm here for the 4runner and not a rock crawler. There may be a bunch of crawler guys out there who would eat it up, I wouldn't know. Outside of the most brutal terrain out there though, where is the 3rd gen struggling to get you? If it were me in your shoes, I would pull a junkyard ls, a wrecked truck with decent 4wd drivetrain, and some truly clapped out vintage car or truck at deaths door, and fabricate my way into a crawler. I think something stupid like a rock crawling volvo 960 wagon, or dodge rampage would turn way more heads than a 4th gen 4runner. Just my .02 though.
Well said, and definitely a different perspective. This is the type of insight I was hoping for. You've given me something else to think about for sure.
@@MechanicalAdventures I am glad if it helped. Just to add, I don't mean to talk you down from a vision either. I personally wouldn't turn it into a crawler, but I'd also keep it. I really love mine, It has been driving my ass around since I was literally a baby, and it has only broken down 3 times in 23 years. twice were alternators, and the only one that left me stranded was caused by improper work from a technician. Everybody loves their stuff for different reasons, and mine is that it is probably the most insanely reliable, persistent piece of technology I've had in my entire life. I don't think I can get rid of it, when I think about it I get a weird sense of cosmic injustice to cast away something so unstoppable. sorry for the sentimental shit. But if you love it because it takes you as far into the woods as possible, and you also want it to be able to go OVER even more things then you should move forward with that. If its your dream to sit on top of bigger boulders in THAT truck, then you should make it happen. If you just want to entertain people with automotive content, then my first comment is applicable. I don't think you need to spend so much to do it, and I don't think it has to be that 4runner. I'd say do what your heart tells you. you have a lot a sweat equity in it, and you definitely had a vision when you started. And if you are on the fence, I don't think there's harm in continuing to push what you've got to its limits while making content. Its made to be enjoyed.
Spend money to make money, imagine the views and clout when you start posting your 3G4R Ton axles build. 🤣 In all seriousness that's a tough one. Would hate to see it go but I understand if you're someone that really enjoys the build process and once its "done" its not really the same. Not interested in just SAS swapping it?
Keep it, I'm here for the 3rd gen. Starting a 99 limited locked project soon.
Def keep it. Keep building it. Keep being budget minded with it. I found your channel because of this build and would like to follow with a similar build of my own. I will be watching what ever you do I like seeing cheap wheeling
Great videos!!!! Keep it and build it!!! We are here for a down to earth build. With everyday problems. Not a 50k build.
Honestly I subscribed for the third gen
KEEP IT!
LOVE THAT RIG!
I say keep it brother those 3rd gen 4 runners are sweet I have one myself and thank you should build it....
Thanks for the continued support my man!
Keep building it!!
2nd gen tacoma build would be cool
Keep it !!
I get your struggle. I’m subscribed either way. Junkyard SAS if you keep it. That’s where I would learn the most.
Get a 4 liter YJ and put the super duty axles under it with a stretch kit.
I personally think keep it. Tons of channels with over the top high dollar builds. I think more people are interested in a real down to earth rig and relatable mods.
Sell it build that 80’s pickup into a tube chassis beast
Keep that thing and lets get back out on the trails and get wheeling! Plenty of warm beers to go around 😏😎
Warm beers on me next week! 😂

Keep it. 4runners have a big following. I see alot of jeep builds on TH-cam an it's nice watching your channel because it's different.
KEEP!
My friend - I feel you. You’re passion an expertise will help dictate your decision. Miles of smiles may be worth it. Ultimately go with you heart

Honda K24 turbo and a northwest fab eco-crawler set up dude, keep it IFS. But at the end of the day what ever you do I know you’re gonna nail it due to the attention to detail you have with the project you work on. Keep up the good work.

Yeah I’m thinking this is the way to go
I regret selling my 3rd gen. It was a green 5 speed manual.
just solid axle swap the VAN !
NOW you're speaking my language! haha
It’s nice having a somewhat “daily” driver rig. Keep it simple, btw thanks for grabbing my roof on the rubicon 😊
😂😂 any time bud!
Hope to see you guys on the trail again soon!
Keep it, do another make/model “budget” build. The entire concept of how this does everything you need it to is awesome.

Do what I've always wanted to do to my 3rd gen...sc400 -1UZ-FE V8 JDM motor swap!!
SAS on leafs and call it a day
Either links or its going up for sale, I already have a ring on leaf springs
I came for the 4runner. I'd say keep making it nice, and keep making it usable. Not everything is about bigger, sometimes it's just about better
LS swap that biaatch! Then break parts! You could do a raffle for it. Billy from SRC does it all the time. They just raffled off a fox body mustang. He’s had great success doing it.
do something noones ever done before, build your own long travel setup for it, use ifs out of f150 or tundra maybe.

Keep it . Yank the motor rebuild it and slap a turbo on it or swap the engine for a Toyota v8 . don't do the boring LS swap . 🤘
A giveaway bro
All buy it from you if you decide to sell
Whatever you do, keep putting out content. All of us here love the vids. If you sell it, maybe start over with a first gen Sequoia. Bigger engine, more room inside, same shitty gas mileage but less strain on your wallet to acquire. Not a lot of guys putting out quality fab content building those up. I’m gonna keep watching whatever you choose to do!
You could totally SAS it with just a trail gear rock assault, so you can keep your wheels and tires, and throw springs under it...
Craziness! 🤘
Brain is loosing his marbles 🤣 @4wheelunderground
Simple sas with leafs and go basic
Dude I hear your dilemma. I'm sort of there with my YJ build, the cost to finish taking it to the 'next level' is more that I can easily rationalize. But for you building this thing is gonna create tons of killer content. Which is what you want right? And at the end of the day, with tons, links, and an ls swap that thing is gonna be badass, and wheeling it is gonna create even more killer content. The possible foreshadowing at the start of this video could be an issue though... Is she down with you building the runner?
Yeah she doesn’t have a dog in the fight, she makes all the money and I’m the financially responsible one 😂
I think you should keep it and like others have said with the simple down to earth mods/build. Once you’ve reached your point of not feeling it then sell it for a new adventure?
Put a supercharger on it
Yeah, I'd be slow to blow too many more thousand$, take your time to figure it out.
Sound advice
Sell it and dump money into the beater! #beatersareneater
beaters are definitely neater
2uz swap.
No stop sell it and move on….
I would go Tacoma build
Spend money to make money, imagine the views and clout when you start posting your 3G4R Ton axles build. 🤣 In all seriousness that's a tough one. Would hate to see it go but I understand if you're someone that really enjoys the build process and once its "done" its not really the same. Not interested in just SAS swapping it?
I don't need another rig on toyota axles and leaf springs. The goal was to build the baddest rig out there but now I'm not so sure
Gotta keep it man. It's cool as fuck. I personally would like to see it in SAS form
Keep it
