I was there at Umuahia that day when that bomb was dropped. Then a young 24 year old photojournalist experiencing his first taste of war having flown in to cover the Biafran Civil War on gun-running planes from Lisbon. I was assigned by UPI as was the Australian journalist interviewing Ojukwu. After meeting Ojukwu, I could no longer claim to be objective; his charisma and intelligence completely won me over to the Biafran cause.

Does anyone notice that that general of individuals like Ojukwu, Ironsi, Balewa, Gowon, and a few other prominent players on our national stage then, possess far far superior intellect than the garbage we have misruling Nigeria today? There is absolutely no comparison....not even close.

But the garbages have been able to run the nation without war. Intelligence is NOT measured by speaking another man's language. Independence in 1960, coup in 1966, followed by pogrom and war broke out in 1967 is no evidence of intelligence. Greed

As at the time of the civil war, the British had many options for oil market. Oil became a major resource when the prices quadrupled following the Yom Kippur war of 1973. Between 1967 and 1970 oil in Nigeria had not become a mainstay to our economy. It was Ojukwu that had some interest in the oil. The French government that saw Nigeria as a threat to their colonies also aided the war.
I like your views, Okpara. But I have a question for you: if Biafra agitators had succeeded, what state would it have been today? Oil is in the South-south, the region of the minorities group, including the Itshekiris, Ijaws, Ibibios, Efiks, Urhobo, and others. Do you think that these regions would have been silent while the Ibos use their resources for development?
My is answer is no: continued wars would have ensued, which would have further disintegrated the country. The British were benign enough to amalgamate the regions in 1914. It's only in Africa and Latin American countries that landlocked areas stand alone as countries. Why is Uganda, Central Africa Republic, South Sudan, Burkina Faso, Niger and others poor?
The commonality of these countries is that they don't have access to the seas. Biafra agitators today fail to realise that the South-south has been liberated. Actually they were liberated as at 1967, and that was why they succumbed to the Federal government.
National issues are very sensitive. We should use our intellects to help build Africa and not further disintegrate it. How would African continent have 55 states and hope to overcome poverty? They cannot break even. When you fractionize inputs of production economies of scale is traded.
However, political failure is worse than economic collapse. Which country in west and central Africa would receive refugees from Nigeria should war break out?

Why do you call Benue states and Platue states including Kwara, Northern states? Why? But In Eastern part is where you can come and divide as Ibos and South South? You understood the surpassing might of your enemies and still continued to rebel against the federal government. How would an ethnicity follow this kind of person? Were there no elders in the Ibo national group to curb him? He wreak untold havoc on the whole country and still had the gut to return from exile after 12 years.

in 1968 there was no media like we have today, facebook, twitter, internet and the pogroms by the north on igbos so it was not very difficult to convince people to go to war.

Okey Opara, was there a common sense in 1968? You don't need social media to reason. Ojukwu proved to be wiser than Azikiwe. Perhaps he gave his people what they wanted. You appeal to reason before you act. Bravery is a virtue, and no virtue is devoid of reason.

Yeah Elisha but in 1968 it was a different time, The British were dominating Gowon using him to control the oil fields. if Ojukwu had been allowed to separate. 70% of the oil and resource control would have been controlled by him. The Western powers were not going to allow that. Gowon was just a puppet. Biafra was against the interest of the western powers. Ojukwu if you look at things carefully really had no choice.

Even today Civil war actors like Christian northerners are justifying Ojukwu's positions back in 67. Because today radical Islamists are attacking Christians in huge numbers in Taraba, Adamawa, Borno, Plateau and Southern Kaduna. These people have no state police to defend themselves. There is a slow process of forced Islamization going on in Nigeria. But it started back in 1967. We need a confederation with a weak center. Like back in the old days for this nation to survive.

Ojukwu had the power/capacity to surrender par ceasefire. But his ego and possibly his advisors never did agree with a cease fire.
He executed the army officers who tried to negotiate a ceasefire. Accusing them of Treason.
Such (execution) was the fate of Ifeajuna, Victor Banjo, Phillip Alale, Sam Agbam... few hours before Enugu was captured.
Ojukwu also Detained WACHUKWU, because he complained if the use of child soldiers.
Many Avenue to shorten the lent of the war, but Ojukwu was still head strong.
In the end, he left Biafra , a card move h must say, and left Biafra in the hands of Philip and Mbanefo, who called for a ceasefire.
I see no heroism cos I did not even hear of casualties from his own family.
He was very much in Nigeria from 1983 till his death. I wonder why he wasn't charged got the deaths of the Biafrans.

You can not project the need to appreciate another, on other people.
No need to appreciate someone who caused the deaths of many. Then resorting to use of child soldiers rather than an armistice or agreement or truce to end a war.
... Finally, in the end, the villain FLEES!

Useless weakling - in the three years Gen. Ojukwu was Commander In Chief of the Biafran Armed forces what could any of you do even with all massive foreign military support? It does not look like you know the meanning of "coward" in English. When Biafra troops were approaching Lagos from Ore all your Nigerian leaders ran away to Zaria in private jet. British and American ambassadors urged the them back to Lagos - F. Forsyth. In the Abagana battle Biafra Major Uchendu's Battalion almoat wiped out Nigeria's 2nd Division led by Gen Muhammed. Wikepedia - " On 31 March 1968, a convoy consisting of 106 vehicles belonging to the Nigerian 2nd Division transporting 6,000 soldiers, as well as armour from Onitsha to Enugu was ambushed and decimated in the town of Abagana. Nigerian Tanker exploded and threw its contents onto a nearby Armour carrier setting everything ablaze. The multiple explosion commenced! Biafran soldiers attacked. In panic, Nigerian soldiers who already crossed over into Biafran line RAN in different directions in total confusion. When Uchendu learnt that Gen Muritala Mohammed was with the Convoy and somewhere in Nawfia, he set off hurriedly to capture him but was late as Muritala was sighted taking off (running away) with a Helicopter! Appears you don't know this. Who are the ones that ran away?
