    • @Chronic.Pivoter
      @Chronic.Pivoter 4 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      Yeah, he does, but that's because to play those midtones one has to have inhuman control over embouchure (muscles, mouth, lips, tongue, throat and so on positioning). He's just tense. Saxophones have the tendency to split certain notes (G being one). I haven't studied his technique in detail, and I do not know his horn set-up, but I am assuming he would have a lot of trouble getting clear tones close to G4, G#4, D5, D#5, G5 and G#5. That's probably also why he doesn't go into microtonal altissimo (the extended range that can be reached by overblowing and producing harmonics above the "normal" range of a woodwind instrument).

      What you say seems to be true of a lot of mid-20th Century microtonal music, but I think it's the problem with the mid-20th Century part -- a lot of non-microtonal mid-20th Century classical music sounds like that. The worst seems to have passed, and both non-microtonal and microtonal classical music from more recent years has gotten better. TH-cam seems to have a profusion of recent good microtonal music -- check out Norokusi (the Claude Debussy of 17EDO, but also composing some in other tuning systems), Cam Taylor (improvises good stuff in a wide variety of tuning systems), Tapeworm Saga (who specializes in making hard-to-use tuning systems sound good and actually knows what they're doing when they convert between them), E8 Heterotic (favors 17EDO, but also experimented with a selection of other tuning systems), Scott Crothers (quarter tone specialist), and quite a number of others who I do not intend to slight by not making an exhaustive list. But not all of the mid-20th Century stuff was bad either -- check out Ivan Wyschnegradsky (the original pioneering giant of 24EDO), Charles Ives (dabbled in quarter tone music), and Alois Hába (haven't heard much of his work yet, but the 1 quarter tone composition I have heard a recording of on TH-cam sounded quite good).
      In fairness, some of the above appeared on the TH-cam scene only after the posting of your comment, but if you're still hanging around here, check them out.

    • @TheSquareOnes
      @TheSquareOnes 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The method is was first introduced to quartertones with and that still seems like the easiest to communicate is adding a + to all of them. So C#+ is the note between C# and D, D+ is the note between D and D# and so on. If you start getting into weirder terminology or things like "sharpening a sharp but as a quartertone and not a traditional double sharp" it just seems like a lot of unnecessary confusion, one simple symbol (doesn't have to be a +, again that's just what I was first exposed to and stuck with) is all you need and makes it crystal clear what every note is after one sentence of explaining the notation being used.

      There is a place for fretless and Tolgahan plays one but this sets you in with exact limits different to normal western fretting which of course sets it own pattern and flavour.

      Keyless saxophones do in fact exist, they're totally impractical though.

    God that sucks! Respect to the technique and skill of the artists, but this is crap. Stick to the 12 notes we already have

      You do realize that the 12 tone system isn't the all governing tone system of the world right? There are several countries that traditionally use microtonal systems in their music. I'd suggest you listen to some raga, Turkish music, Balkan music, gamelan, and avant-garde jazz. Also I suggest you read about microtonality, especially 22 shruti, one of the most advanced traditional tonal systems in the world right now.

      Jake Fettes - I do realize that. And some people might really like it, I just haven't met anybody that does lol. I don't want to listen to anything that sounds this bad. This frustrates me because this is why Jazz is dying. We're so focused on "creating" that we forget music should still be pleasing to the ear. This was painful to listen to!

      I thought it was pretty chill lol. In my opinion the entire point of Jazz is creating new things. Rather than dying because the music becomes less pleasing to the ear, I think Jazz would more likely by dying due to a lack of new ideas or progress

      I fully agree. I know they think it's supposed to be unironic and profound or whatever but it just sounds like a 6 year old just picked up a guitar and played at random.
