I met Steve in Feb 2020 just before his show and holy what a down to earth humble guy. We talked about the Alberta Rocky Mountains and the paintings his father made of them. We didn't even talk about music--just the beauty of nature. He signed about 8 LPs of his and Genesis that I brought. Amazing person. And as he said, interacting with fans he has no problem with. I was so honoured to have met him.
Just pulled up the comments to say the same thing. That solo on 12 is a multi-goosebump moment for me. What's so interesting is that you don't even have to know the line up, and you can go "Is that Hackett?" And be reasonably sure it is.
This was an absolute treat to watch and hear..mutual respect and admiration from very humble, yet extremely talented musicians sharing stories. Thanks so much for posting.
Genesis Revisited would have been so much better if it had a way better singer than Nad Sylvan. You know, someone on the level of, for example... Neal Morse!
@@anthonyfarshaw8619 I agree with Steve's choice: Nad was perfect for the role - his voice has that important brassy Gabriel quality that Neal just does not. Also Nad is quite theatrical, as Peter Gabriel was in the days these songs were performed. And I'm a huge fan of Neal's (obviously). No Nad Sylvan bashing here - I'm a fan: Steve understands this music at its deepest levels and he made the wise choice.
Two legends. Took my brothers to see Steve live a few years ago on Genesis Revisited. Epic. SB and Neal's solo stuff is amazing as well. Thanks for this chat Neal.
Interesting what they both say about collaboration v. working solo. I think Neal is more lucky these days in that the bands he works with seem to collaborate well together. I don't think Steve had that joy in Genesis , at least regarding song-writing. Anyway, a great chat. I think this is the one some of us have been waiting for . Thanks Neal and Steve.
I remember seeing Steve doing the SEBTB tour. His Les Paul died during the intro to I know what I like. Cool a a cucumber, he waved to his techie and a replacement miraculously appeared. Totally unfazed.
Mr. Hackett seems like such a wonderful guy. I would really love to just sit and talk about music with both you guys, you’re so fascinating and inspiring.
Great interview. I loved Steve's little BRIAN ENO story. The whole interview was a fantastic end of week after work wind down for me. Thanks to you both! 😎
Great interview. I think Steve is referring to the track deja vu that was Enters song idea and probably vetoed by Tony/ Mike! Steve has since completed that great idea.
If it weren't for Mr. H. (and his brother), I would never have gotten 'on board' with volume swells, polyphonic guitar synths, or 'oblique guitar playing' in general! I owe a LARGE portion of my love of electric guitar to this guy!
Besides both that are Prog legends, they have had their own brothers play in the same band with each one: John Hackett and Alan Morse who also are amazing musicians..ah and also both are band members with Roine Stolt! Talk about an authentic Prog brotherhood :-)
Its OH so bad that Steve and Steve didn't do more with GTR. "When the heart rules the mind" was such a great mix of prog and pop, it reminded me of something like what Rush would do, minus Geddy's iconic vocals. Its a bummer. You never hear anyone cover it, either. Its such a unique song.
I hear that Steve's next project with his band will be "Seconds Out", I'm hoping that is not the case...Instead, he should cover "Trespass" and "Nursery Cryme" both in their entirety, and maybe "The Lamb..." at some point. As for this interview...I'm really tired of zoom calls that freeze and falter, you miss a lot of dialogue, but did I notice red wine with a water chaser?
@@anthonyfarshaw8619 Yeah, I know Steve didn't play on Trespass, but it would be very interesting to hear his current band recreate the music, and just think of Nad covering Visions of Angels and Dusk/Stagnation. I guess if they do Seconds Out, we'll get their version of White Mountain.
Just for posterity's sake, I realize that "White Mountain" is not on Second's Out, however; they did perform it during their '76 tour, I know because I saw them do it. Sorry for the misinformation.
@@booshting3520 Sorry, I can't go down that road with you, Steve was long gone by "Invisible Touch", and even though he wasn't there for "Trespass", that album provided a framework for the direction Genesis would subsequently take, and Steve fit that mold beautifully.
You look back at Steve Hackett's body of work and think wow! And he' still coming up with wonderful stuff!

Hello, I saw the Edmonton show on Feb. 27/2020. I met him twice on Cruise to the Edge and agree, very laid back humble man.
Steve's solo on "12" is one of the coolest guitar solos EVER! There's so much to geek-out over when it comes to Steve's guitar work over the years.

ohhhhh the wonderful Steve!
Two legends.
You've had some interesting musicians on this show, but you just hit a home run with Steve! Long live Genesis Revisited - so good! :)

@@anthonyfarshaw8619 Oh hell no
Love your podcast Neal we don't have enough Prog Gods with podcasts, talking to other Prog Gods
I love how Steve is so concerned about "name dropping". He's such a down-to-earth individual. I could listen to him name-drop all day!
I know, right??!!
Totally
Two of my prog heroes of all times! Wishing more collaborations between these two gentlemens!
Steve Hackett?! Neal I don't how you do it! NICE
@Randy A That's a Hackett album, yeah? I saw the High Voltage vid yesterday and thought they pulled it off nicely, presumably on short-notice :)
Great interview! Steve is a wonderful artist who continues to "strive beyond existing stagnant music forms". HIs new album is wonderful!

Wonderful 🌞
I love his acoustic albums !
Great chat - I’ve been fortunate enough to talk to Steve a couple of times and he’s such a down to earth bloke, top man (as is Neal!).
Gotta love technology. A guy in Nashville TN interviewing another guy in England and I'm watching it in Japan....
Love both these guys.

Great interview. I was at High Voltage when Steve came on for Giant Hogweed. A total shock to the system as his show was the day after
I was there too! Unfortunately Hackett's own set was criminally short. Why they only gave him 30 min I will never understand...
@@GeeVanderplas I couldn't understand it either. I guess it was because he was on so early in the day on Sunday. Not even an encore!!
Blessed indeed!

Steves Hackett, Hillage and Howe. Very different but I think Mr Hackett is my favourite.

Borsch is beetroot soup which, surprisingly, I liked it.

Never upset by a musician asking for an adjustment to the monitors
I saw you, Neal, in St. Charles, Il. and Gentle Giant did a lot of ranting about their sound during their first few songs.
If there's a nicer and more down to earth musician than Steve Hackett, please let me know. I don't think one exists.
I hope I live long enough to hear Steve straight-out compare Tony Banks to Hitler.
I don't like LOUD myself. TSOAD was PERFECT in Glasgow. (thanks Mr Mouser)

Steve didn't play on "Trespass", so it's unlikely he will choose that album.
