  • A short video documentary of my trip with my grandfather to Estonia in 2009. We retraced the path his family took avoiding the horrors of war as the Soviet army invaded Estonia during WWII. We also experienced a beacon of pride for Estonians, The National Song & Dance Festival or Laulupidu.

Thank you for sharing this video here. I have watched it with my 90 year old father and we found it very interesting and moving since he was one who managed to survive and immigrate to Australia to have a successful life. He returned in 1992 for the first time since the war, reconnected with family and friends and went along to the song festival. Viewing this video has been wonderful.

My father passed away in December last year so now it's my time to retrace his steps. He lent the VCR recordings of his return to Estonia , as you have presented here, but they were never returned so once again I am grateful that you have shared your movie with the world and he was there for the 1992 song festival filming everything. Valter Liivamagi took hundreds of photos of his time in Germany until recent years so we have an amazing collection of photographical history plus his story is in the Tallinn library Antslamehe is the title. I miss him greatly but the TH-cam clips I have posted of him keep him with me. Thank again and I trust you are well and happy in your life. Regards Gail Sparrow of Broken Hill Australia

Thank you for sharing this story. My parents emigrated from Estonia but never shared their story in this kind of detail. Thank you for bringing this alive for me. I will be sharing this with my kids as well. Really well done too. Aitäh

Such a moving story. It's a privilege to see more of Kalev's heritage. Charlie (Kalev) is a great friend with an important message in this documentary. Especially now with Russia on the move again. We can't let that history repeat itself. Thank you for this video.

    Charlie:
We were in Theta Chi together. I just saw your video and you look great. Just like when you won the boxing championship but way less hair. Obviously life has been good to you. Oddly my son visited Estonia when he spent his junior year in St. Petersburg. We live in LA where all my kids and grandkids live. Hope to hear from you.

Saw this film yesterday. It is very good. Interesting to follow you around in Estonia. See the Sinimäed, Põlva, Kaagepera station, Big Egg mountain. Everything filmed with crispy sharpness. I liked that very much. This year is next Laulupidu coming. I´ll be there. Filming with my NIKON D7100 to get crispy sharpness also. Hope to see more of your trip to Estonia. :)
