    i bought the LX100 II as a backup camera to my Fuji X-T3. I wanted something more portable than the Fuji X100 with some zoom range. I do not experience the focusing issue you describe with the LX100. I also bought a Megagear cover from B&H camera that fits like a glove and gives you a little extra grip. This protects the body and the top of the cover snaps off for shooting.. Occasionally I use a can of pressurized air to clear dust from around the camera body. So far so good. I'm very pleased with it. Thanks for the review

      @@seed157 I love the LX100. We just went to Europe in December. I brought the X-T3 and two small lenses and the LX100. 90% of the time, I grabbed the LX100. If you shoot RAW with it, the files have plenty of info for good post processing. Great colors and very versatile.

    I have been using the LX100 for 7 years now, and just replaced it with the Leica D-LUX 7, which has the same base as the LX100 II. I think that this camera is more useful than you think, even for professional use it is really good compared to other compacts. The sensor in the LX100 II is the same as the 20 MP sensor in the GX8. I mostly use the camera for situations where I can or do not want to carry my big Lumix S1, and where my phone is not good enough. Professional shoots count too, my LX100 has done very well.
    I mostly agree with your pros and cons. The most important pro for me are image quality and operation, the most important con is the lack of a microphone jack and the lack of weather sealing.
    My camera has dust on the sensor as well, very annoying. I plan to fix it myself, it is difficult but should not be rocket science. The LX100 II (and my D-LUX 7) will still have the dust problem.
    It is a shame that Panasonic killed off the LX series, there will not be a successor...

      Kill? Hence Leica will kill the Lux camera lineup too even Panasonic has new MFT sensor now?
      If I'm going to get Panasonic HC-X1500 camcorder for video, should I get Sony A7RV with 16-35mm F4 PZ and 70-200mm F4 OSS G MACRO II with 2X tele or RX100 VII/VIIA or D Lux 7 for photo? I do like to explore ultramacro and is there such adaptor or way for RX100 and D Lux 7? I will use for personal use like document life, travel, TH-cam and personal works and projects. Does it make sense to get a smaller D Lux 7 camera that can't put in pocket and still need to carry with a bag or hang on neck and not just get A7RV which still not that big and have better grip, EVF and performance?

    Thanks for the video! I’ve seldom noticed any focusing problems, the LX100 is snappy and accurate for photography. I have a compact leather case designed for the LX100 which makes it very easy to bring the camera along on the shoulder. I suppose it will minimize the potential problem with dust entering the camera interior. Removing the camera from the leather case is done in two seconds. I also have Nikon and Fujifilm cameras (APS-C format) with prime lenses, but unless you make very large prints the sharpness is comparable.

    Nice overview, thanks. I'm interested in the LX 100 for taking cycling and camping, but the dust issue rules it out for me. I've had that problem with my Ricoh GR, and it's ridiculously expensive to get it cleaned, and really quite frustrating. Not being able to stop down beyond f4 really isn't a satisfactory solution for me. To answer your question, I really want to get my GF-1 into regular use again. I took most of my favourite photos with that camera.

    • @Gary_W
      @Gary_W  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello Steve! This LX100 is a good solution for city/street photography in my experience! Unfortunately it doesn't have strong enough sensor cleaning mechanism, I tried cleaning the sensor using vacuum cleaner on the front element of the lens, but it doesn't work as well as I thought, and I'm afraid it could damage the lens parts in the long run. As long as you don't shoot anything smaller than f/4 the dust won't be noticeable.

      I do have a gimbal and I did use it occasionally with the LX100, but it's way too much hassle to travel with a gimbal. I still prefer the DJI Pocket 3 for smooth steady shots, and use the LX100 for additional B rolls that doesn't require too much movement.

    Great video! So glad we cross paths, because since last week I started looking for a good camera for Vlogging, and for my B roll. One with good stabilization without using a gimbal, and has good weather seal, and probably with a monitor side screen or something like that. But one that's not over the $2,000 price range. Presently, I have been using the GoPro Hero 9 black, but I cannot zoom and with low light outdoor, not as bright and crisp. And my DJI OM 4 stabilizer has some issues too. I just watch this video from start to finish, and I will be watching more. Thank you.

      Thank you very much for the comment! I have a few recommendations for your need, I am currently using my Panasonic G85, it is weather sealed, has good in body stabilization, and it will perform very well for both vlogging and B roll. It is way under $2000, and there are many good lenses that are also more affordable. I recommend the Panasonic 14-140mm f/3.5-5.6 if you need the ultimate zoom range, but if you need low light then you can consider Panasonic 12-35mm f/2.8. You are very welcome, and once again thank you 😊

      All of what you mentioned are valid options, they might even replace the HC-X1500 for video if you don't need the ultra-telephoto zoom, because frankly speaking they will produce more "cinematic" footages compared to the HC-X1500. I always opt for smaller but capable camera for my everyday camera, so I personally think either the RX100 or D Lux 7 will do the job while also do great for video as well. However, the A7RV will definitely give you the flexibility of interchangeable lens should you need it, but it's much larger than either RX100 or D Lux 7.

    Hi Gary, some questions for you, I'm currently using Fujifilm X-A7 with the XC 15-45mm kit lens+hood as my main camera (which is not so compact and portable), and looking for seconday camera that's compact and portable for me to bring inside my crossbody sling bag, is the Lumix LX100 still good for 2023 onwards? since i found the used LX100 around my budget, is it compact enough that i can use it to replace my smartphone to take photo during travels, and how's the image quality performs versus nowdays smartphone computational photography? not to be used for something professional, just for some instagram feeds use

    • @Gary_W
      @Gary_W  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ISpeaking of image quality really think the LX100 is still a good camera in 2023, definitely I really enjoy the ability to change settings easily on the camera. The camera is quite lightweight and small, and it performed really well for travel photography.
      However I want to emphasize is the "tactility" of using a real camera, the LX100 will give you that tactility, not just good result. Smartphones may give you good photos with those computational photography, but the actual process of doing photography i.e setting the camera, choosing the right aperture, shutter speed, focusing, framing the shots carefully, is much more enjoyable if you are using a dedicated camera.

    Is lx100 better than the latest phone cameras ? what would you say ?

    • @Gary_W
      @Gary_W  2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I wouldn't say phone is better or LX100 is better, I will say they are great but for different purposes. If you need good image quality and easy to access manual controls in a form of a compact camera, then LX100 is a really good choice, but if you value convenience and just want to point and shoot then phones will be better.
      Speaking of image quality alone, LX100 will provide you with better "actual" image quality both in terms of photo and video compared to phone, but phones with computational photography capabilities can give you "enhanced" image quality that will look good also i.e. night mode on Pixel or Samsung, portrait mode on iPhone, etc.

      Thank you for sharing your opinion. I agree if we are strictly speaking in terms of image quality. However, from the perspective of the actual process of doing photography, the "enjoyment" factor is much higher on dedicated camera vs on smartphone. The tactility, the form factor, the ergonomics, the ability to set manual settings on a dedicated camera can't be easily replicated using a smartphone.
