    I'm doing something similar growing pepper plants with my children this year.
    I've got 6 plants, 3 of which are planted in a soil based mix (John Innes No3) and the other 3 are planted in a peat moss mix (Erin Molloy's). 1 soil and 1 peat moss gets plain water, 1 soil and 1 peat moss gets Tomorite once a week, and 1 soil and 1 peat moss have miracle gro slow release pellets mixed into the pots.
    It's interesting to see how things unfold.
    So far all of the soil based plants are doing better than the peat moss ones, and the best looking plant so far is the soil + straight water.
    Early days yet.

    • @GrowIt
      @GrowIt  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's a great idea to compare the different growing mediums too! I really wanted to have them in separate pots, I should have been patient and waited for the garden centre to reopen. Let me know how you get on and good luck!

      @You Tube yes from what I found the different soil types made little to no difference.
      The plants that were given just water yellowed, stunted and didn't produce any peppers. The John Innes water only plant took longer to go yellow, so if anything that confirms that John Innes No3 is pretty nutrient rich.
      The plants fed with tomorite and the plants with miracle gro slow release all ended up pretty much identical in size and produced a similar amount of peppers. There was slightly better results with the miracle gro but no massive difference.
      All in all my conclusion was that some fertilizer is always better than none and that high potassium feed (tomorite) which is supposed to yield more fruit didn't fair any better than the high nitrogen (miracle gro) fed plants.
      This year I'm going organic. My indoor plants grown on windowsills have had a handful of fish blood and bone meal mixed into each pot and will be fed liquid seaweed.
      My outdoor plants are getting a handful of chicken manure pellets mixed into each pot and will also be getting liquid seaweed.

  • @MorningsattheAllotment

    As soon as my tomatoes go in the ground I stop fertilizing. I feed the soil with compost - and may just add a bit of leftover sheep's fleece into the plant holes (but more for water storage than for fertilizing). But I'm currently trying to figure out how to feed the plants at seedling stage while they're still in pots...

    • @GrowIt
      @GrowIt  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I love the idea of using fleece to retain water! Maybe consider putting your pots into a shallow tray of water based fertiliser (homemade or concentrated), capillary action will draw the feed up from the bottom as it evaporates from the top of the pot, leaving the organic compounds behind in the soil.

    Wait till you test the PH of any nutrient mixed with water. Once you adjust the PH to the correct range of 5.5-7.0, then see them grow.
    My quick tip, water as normal. PH your chemical nutrient.

      Hi Sara you can water your plants as normal, although it would be better to not water them for at least a few hours before and after watering with fertiliser to reduce the amount that is lost through the soil.

    My tomato feed says 2 cap fulls in 7 litres.. I cap is (15ml) my tomato plant is 3 weeks old.. How much should I but in a standard 500 ml bottle... Or could I just but just under a cap full of feed in a 2 litre bottle and feed when necessary

    • @GrowIt
      @GrowIt  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It would be around 2ml in a 500ml bottle at that dilution, you'd be best making it as you need it so that it's fresh. That should be fine for a small plant and once it gets bigger and starts to flower you can increase it to whatever the bottle says. For example it could be the 30ml in 7 litres once a week for a grow bag.

    Hi. The miracle grow all purpose soluble plant food has an NPK 24,8,16 and yet the liquid one you use is 7,3,5. That a huge difference depending on whether you use soluble or liquid. I've always used the soluble on my plants. Any advise if this will work the same - is it just diluted more when mixing and ends up about the same?

    • @GrowIt
      @GrowIt  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s interesting I didn’t think of that. It’s almost the same ratio of each nutrient if you divide the soluble one by 3 (approx 8:3:5), so it could be some differences in the formula or dilution process when making the liquid one that causes the slight discrepancy. At that much difference the results shouldn’t be noticeable!

      Add 1 teaspoon granules of that or like Schultz 20-20-20 to get 5-5-5 with dilution which is what I do and then water all my plants I love organic fertilizer but it isnt viable in containers as the soil life isnt there to break down the fertilizer.

    I never understood why water can touch stem or leaves. When it rains outside clearly it will be wet.

    • @GrowIt
      @GrowIt  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Blight is the biggest disease threat to tomato plants and when the plants are wet it has a much easier time getting in or spreading. Even keeping them dry outside helps to reduce disease spreading between plants! It’s also best to avoid leaves when watering with plant food just because it burns them if the water sits on the leaf with high fertiliser concentrations.

    • @GrowIt
