Riding Sani Pass on big Adventure Bikes, December 2022

- Day 3 of our 5 day Adventure Tour sees us tackling the notorious Sani Pass for breakfast - literally.
By lunch time we were heading into battle in some of the most remote parts of the beautiful and unforgiving Lesotho 🇱🇸 mountains.

You should watch Itchy Boots video of her riding up the Sani pass alone on a Honda CRF250. The condition of the road that you rode on up the pass is like pavement in comparison to the condition when she rode up it.
That’s the thing about Sani Pass. You never know what condition you’re going to find it in. Most times it’s a gamble and you need to be ready for anything.
And that was in Covid times. She encountered no other traffic at all! Every thing was deserted and closed. Gave a total different experience !
A CRF250 wouldn’t get me up the hill. Itchy is a cute Dutch little lady. I’m a large Dutch Irish man. I need the R1250GSR just to get going. Best bike I’ve ever owned for riding anywhere.

Nice ride. It's so green and pretty. It's also good to see that the road has been fixed. When I did it last January, it was in a horrible condition. But no matter the condition, Sani will always be an epic ride that requires respect for the road!

Well, it was actually a Q3. But when I saw it coming down I was like: “Sani Pass is not the same anymore”. I had to edit that out of the video 😂😂

I’m sure you’ll be able to do it some day. The key is preparation. Most of us don’t just wake up and suddenly decide we’re going to ride up there with no experience 😂😂

Regarding the road tyres, you should’ve seen the situation that unfolded the day before when we encountered mud and clay on Lower Lotheni road…

Nice video. Tastefully done. You had nice weather compared to 4 of us on KTMs coming up a bit later that same morning. We had misty/cloudy conditions for most of gravel section then clear skies beyond the last switchbacks. We went back down again after lunch. Great experience. 😊
I remember you guys arriving as we were leaving. We road onwards into Lesotho and to be honest the best riding and scenery happened later on that day in the Lesotho mountains. I’ve posted a video of that too.

Great video Bruno! Thank you for sharing! A few years ago I did Sani Pass on a Dakar 650 with some friends and the conditions at the time were terrible. There was lots of rain and ice, which made it hard going getting up. Nevertheless, with much sliding and many close calls, we eventually made it to the top. Well done to you and your fellow riders for taking those big bikes up the pass successfully! Wishing you many more safe, and exciting kms, on your bike!

I recently visited Sani Pass, this time in a 4x4. Current conditions are much worse than what you see in this video. Enjoy it though - it should be a blast.

I think Itchy Boots did it last year. Road is in much better condition now.

Yep. It’s a good thing to do - very practical.
@@GetLostAdventure I use the red tape on the back corners, and yellow reflective tape on the front corners. I also added reflective dots. Yellow on the sides, red and blue in the back. A flash of police blue keeps people back.
Good video, i ride an air cooled engine GSA. I rode with you at one ride but I wouldnt say you have riding friends or willing to make friends with guys trying to ride. the F800GS that had puncher on Dullstroom ride we had with the likes of NKO, Dr Wezi, Papi, etc etc from Bronkhorstspruit i had to cut it short at Loskop Dam. I wouldn't to ride with you because of things i picked up from you.

I do remember you. The last time I rode *off road* with *complete strangers* was the day you showed up, and it was then that I decided that I would never do it again.
It is a very risky thing to do, for multiple reasons:
- guys show up poorly equipped. That day he had a puncture and he had absolutely no clue about anything. He even tried to plug his tyre at the gas station not knowing that it isn’t even tubeless. I personally spent a huge amount of time on the trail (time we couldn’t afford on that day) trying to help him out - but you conveniently forget to mention that.
- strangers show up on off road rides and they have never actually ridden off road before. *Zero skills!*. This is highly dangerous as that person can get seriously hurt or cause an accident with someone else in the group.
So these days, I choose VERY wisely who I ride with. I need to know you, and I need to know that you are a competent off road rider.
To be an adventurer, you need to be very organized, well equipped and skilled. Otherwise you will fail when attempting to do adventure trips such as the one in this video.

Would this kind of bike be OK for me? Considering how heavy and high they are coz yall look like big gents m a bit skinny. I wanted a cruiser bike it's less intimidating but I doubt it'll handle well off road
If you want to ride off road, get yourself a smaller, lighter bike. Most people are terrified and not very capable of riding the big bikes off road.
i did the sani pass 3times, but i have never seen in this good conditions

How Good WAS those roads. Way back then when Goverment and Authorities cared. Way, way back, like neary 30 years. 🤔😳🙄😬😪🤕. I am talking the tar roads in towns
I cam imagine that traction would have been an issue after they crate the road. That challenge doesn't show on the video!

That’s possible. Sani Pass can be your worst nightmare, or a walk in the park. It depends on the condition of the road.
