I have a little tip that you could consider, the screw sizes and types in cheap end guitars are of the thinest and cheapest generally, and with this comes easy breakage, corrosion etc because of the thread pitch and space, a good and better way to repair this type of issue is to upgrade the screw to imperial and stainless, the shoulders are much thicker and taper shank, coarse thread and the existing hole makes a good pilot for them, I've done this on a few myself, the results are top notch, and the screws are like back in the seventies good solid decent fasteners that won't snap and difficult to strip because if the taper which those modern cheap one do not have, something else for your consideration perhaps.
will need to figure out the shim situation on my jaguar build in the near future when I get back to it. I have never checked my MIJ Jazzmaster but no problems with break angle etc. I Had a thre strip on my mim telecaster neck screws and I fixed it by jamming two cocktail sticks down there with some wood glue, whittling them flat and then screwing it back up, everything tightened nicely and stayed true. I took it apart a few months after and it still tightened up without spinning. I'm not sure how long it will last (though the glue and the surrounding wood should protect the cocktail sticks somewhat) but I prefer this to using bigger screws since it doesn't mean I'm using any of the actual wood up theoretically I can do this again and again, as opposed to if we encounter the same problem again with the bigger screws- whre i guess Dowels would be the only soloution.
I changed neck on my SQ CV jazzmaster yesterday. Put J Mascis one and the regular screws couldnt take a gripp so the neck felt off whole time. I put one size bigger screws and it stays in place now. 🙂
paper of all things lol. Seriously though, I like the look of Jazzmasters but If I bought one brand new and needed to shim it, I would send it back as defective. I am a bit of a strange person I guess, but when I spend hundreds of dollars on a finished product, I do not expect to have to go the extra 50 miles to make the product function properly. Though from what I have heard about Jazzmasters, most of the time a shim is not needed.. I have noticed some changes in the way I feel about things as of late, and this brushes on one of them. I used to say, oh well I have to do a little extra work to make this guitar play as well as it can, but now I have caught myself realizing that by doing that work on the guitar, I am working for the manufacturer for free, and I am not into the whole working for free thing lol... I think I am getting crazy with my old age lol.
Dude, i can feel you. I think exakt the same. Guitar players are the most stupid customers. Never heard someone talk about about cars the same way. Buying a new car with the permission to repair it. Just received a new Fender Vintera Jazzmaster and i can't lower the bridge more to get a good playable string height. So i had to shim the neck. And i don't want to do this work, because i want a flawless instrument when i pay 1000 bucks.
Man that's lame on the part of the seller. I'd be filling in the hole again and redrilling, but that's just me. I'm sure you're aware, but stewmac makes some nice angled shims-expensive though.

The reason I asked is because I got a CV Jazzmaster the other day and it played well straight out of the box (except for the sinking bridge but nail varnish !) but I shimmed it anyway as I did my Jag... It plays well now so was it really worth the shim? As you said, shortscale forums are full of good info about Jags and Jazzmasters but are they always necessary? What's your experience?
If it ain't broke don't fix it is my opinion, if you're having issues like lack of string tension/string slippage then go for it. I've had 4 of these CV Jazzmasters never had the need yet to shim one.
@@theguitarmanifesto very true. I like 11s so string tension is not a problem. It's a great guitar anyway. Pickups are really nice especially the neck and middle. Bridge is OK but workable
I read a build log from a "luthier" who was putting a guitar together for a custom and said he'd normally stick a matchbook or a guitar pick in there, but he happened to have some Stew Mac shims so he used those 🤦♂️ Even if you're kidding, stupid people can read that and believe you...
Good tip use the next size bigger screws. I had to do that on a Strat tremelo claw.
