  • While this hand-building video was made for my students who are currently working from home, with a kit from me, many of the kit items can be substituted with things found at home.
We’ll make 2 small bowls, by slumping slabs, then join them together at their rims, creating an air filled sphere, shape it into a box, then cut out our lid. Enjoy!
    The Hand-Building Kit includes:
-Work board (18" x 18" Hardibacker board works well)
    -Vinyl/Canvas fabric
-Thickness guide sticks (I use a 1/4" thick yardstick from Lowes, sawed in half)
-Pottery hand tools (wire cutter, sponge, pottery rib, pottery scoring tool, needle tool, knife)
    -Plastic sheets of varying thickness
    -Clay, 1 lb
Other items used, found at home:
    -Rolling pin
    -Round Plastic to-go Containers
    -T-shirt material, cut into squares
    -Rubber bands
    -Cardboard squares
-Cornstarch to keep things from sticking
-Sock filled with small grains to round your clay
    -Spray bottle of water
-Plastic sheets or plastic containers to control drying
    -Vinegar
    -Paintbrush

Hi Barbara, on a different vid, you make a butter bulb. Can you please let me know how much clay do you use & how wide do you make them. I really appreciate it.

Hello Barbara, your tutorials are great!!! Why do you use vinagre instead of slip? Thank You!

Hi Silvana, thanks for the question. I sometimes use vinegar AND slip. It depends on what I’m joining. If the pieces are moist then scoring and vinegar can be enough. Excess slip needs to be removed or compressed or it may form cracks.
