These comments by Arinze are concise, very well thought out and expressed and speak for the majority of Catholics, I believe. This is another transparently Holy Man. I was probably as much as anyone I knew in the Ratzinger camp in 2005, and I miss him multiple hours every day. But I have great reverence and love for Arinze, who is the picture of a man who effectively communicates his faith, and he is playing a large role, alone with Cardinal Turkson in the explosion of Catholicism in Africa. May these Princes of the Church continue to do their job in remembering to always pray to discern what God wants. Cars.

Arinze is great! I'll never forget when he gave a speech at Georgetown and ripped into them for not having any Catholic identity anymore (i.e. crucifix on wall in classrooms, having pro-abortion faculty members, etc.) and he ruffled their feathers and offended the libs. Okay, kiddo. You can say whatever you want, but it doesn't change the fact that you rely on your ad hominem rants in order to feel better about yourself.
My argument was based upon Scripture: the church is the very pillar and foundation of the truth. You never even bothered addressing that. Instead, you regurgitated some foolishness about the Pope not being as virtuous as you suppose you are.

I am a Catholic, and I think a fairly knowledgeable one. You obviously do not know what you are talking about.
1 - The Pope is not the "god" of Catholics. The Pope is a servant of the Church. As the leading bishop, we look to him for instruction and pastoral care. We do not worship him.
2 - Only God forgives sins. Not the Pope. Not a priest. Christians have been performing auricular confession (privately to the priest) since the earliest days of Christianity.

Great city = JERUSALEM, sits on seven mountains/hills (Jerusalem), "Make the tabernacle in this manner: Thou shalt make ten curtains of fine twisted linen, and violet and purple, and scarlet twice dyed" Exodus 26:1 (Tabernacle--->Temple in JERUSALEM), "come out of her" (your Protestant denomination) Revelation 18:4.

Funny you'd say that. The Gospel of Matthew is believed by many reputable scholars (and the early Church Fathers agree with this) to have been written in Aramaic originally!
The distinction of large and small rocks is true, in Classical Greek. However, the distinction is NOT preserved in Koine Greek.
Yes, all Scripture is inspired by God, but remember that men were the ones who wrote it. They had occasional slip-ups in wording, such as the humorous addendum of "Demas too" at Colossians 4:14.

Really? Revelation 17 says the words "Catholic Church" in it?
If not, you are guilty of making a private interpretation of prophecies of Scripture (2 Peter 1:20) and you are sinning.
Don't worry, you can be forgiven if you confess your sins to another (James 5:16), specifically one whom Christ ordained to the office (John 20:23) and one who carries out the ministry of reconciliation as an ambassador of Christ (2 Corinthians 5:18-20).
I thought that Satan knew Scripture well...Guess I was wrong.

Yes, they were representatives of the Church, and poor ones at that.
You could say that the men who burned heretics were poor witnesses to the Catholic faith just as Jack Schaap was (hopefully) a bad witness to the Baptist faith.
It is unfortunate that men in places of authority are bad at their jobs, but it happens. Prayer can ease our pains, but forgiveness of them is necessary first.
Remember not to throw the first stone until you have no sin within you.

I understand that the masculine/feminie differentiation of petra and petros sets you off, but keep in mind that the noun gender change was necessary as Simon was a man and would be rather embarassed if Christ gave him a feminine name!
Further, Christ didn't speak Greek in the first place, He would have said" You are Kephas and on this kephas [rock] I will build my church."
Matt. 16:18 is not my only justification. Who did Jesus ask to watch his flock in John 21:15-17?None other than St. Peter.

You don't understand what the word heretic means. The Catholic scientists who proposed new theories were ridiculed by ALL of their contemporary society. The equivalent of Copernicus (a Catholic priest) positing his theory at that time would be like someone proposing gravity is caused by invisible strings between all matter. It would sound ridiculous in the face of current sciences, just as his theory did.
By the way, the Church never did that. Individuals within the Church did. Huge difference.

Who are you to say whether or not they have repented? Have you met every one of them personally and asked them if they have repented?
I'm glad you have been born again. I was born again by water and the Holy Spirit 17 years ago at my baptism.
I hope that some day you will realize your mistake in leaving truth in favor of an easy plan of salvation.

St. Jerome used the Greek, Hebrew, and possibly Aramaic texts to put together the Latin Vulgate.
What Egyptian texts are you referring to? I don't think St. Jerome knew hieroglyphics...
The Book of Enoch is alluded to in Jude 1:14, but it was never added to the official canon of Scripture because the Hebrews did not accept it as inspired in the Old Testament era. The Church, when standardizing the canon, did not think it expedient to add a sense of inspiration to it that was not there prior.

Was EVERY word that Jesus spoke necessarily literal?
Do you truly hate your mother, father, and your own life? (Lk 14:26)
And, I'm sure you're an advocate of the nonliteral meaning of Matt 26:26-28.
But, with regard to the original point, was St. Paul condemned because he called Abraham his father? (Rom 4:12, 16)
Finally, what do you call your own father? Papa, Pop, Dad, etc. all mean the same thing, so don't think you can gloss over Matt. 23:9 just by not using the exact word "father."

Yes, I am rather upset that men sin.
Unfortunately, the Church has not always had as great men as St. Peter to run it (though even he denied Jesus thrice!). I posit Alexander VI, Formosus, etc.
Nevertheless, the FACT that men sin does not turn me away from the Church that Christ founded.
The Church needs a Pope for the same reason the Hebrews needed a king, they would be lost in anarchy if they tried to establish a pure theocracy.
MAYBE a nice thought, but it's simply not even feasible.

The Church is the Body of Christ and the very "pillar and foundation of truth." If you wish to speak against it, be my guest. Heretics have been doing that for 2000 years now.
If you wish to speak against the men in it who have been admittedly far from perfect, do so, but remember Christ's teaching on casting the first stone.
True, a disgusting number of Catholic (as well as Protestant) clergy have committed sexual sin. However, speaking bad about them will solve nothing.
    Rather, pray for them.

The Catholic Church IS the Church of Christ, plain and simple and has the Divine guarantee that the gates of hell shall not prevail. If at any point in history the Catholic Church ceased being the Church that Christ founded then God's promises to the Church have failed and the gates of hell have prevailed.
What you refer to as 'a perversion of biblical principles' is your perception. The authority to teach in His name never left the Church and the Church continues this mission.

You missed the point: The original twelve consisted of sinners (one grievously so) and so if you're going to condemn the Church today based on the fact that there's some members who don't want to follow the teachings of Christ then you must equally apply that principle throughout all history.
You don't judge a medicine by those who refuse to take it, do you? Nor should you judge the Church by the actions of those who do not follow it's teachings.

You can look in Rev 12 to start. Obviously the Antichrist will rise up against the Church.
Perhaps you would like to name a scripture contradiction and be more specific as to what you're referring to as innocent blood? Are you scandalized by sinful members in the Church? How are you then not scandalized by Christianity in general (assuming you're protestant) since there were sinful members to begin with; one of the original 12 betrayed Christ?

What religion (or lack of) are you coming from? God in the O.T. ordered thousands to be killed (ie. book of Exodus etc.) And St. Peter pronounces the death sentence to Ananias's wife in Acts:5. The death penalty is clearly established in the Bible as legitimate.
Concerning "millions" killed during the inquisition it has been demonstrated that there maybe a few thousands over the course of 300 years but they were justified under religious and state law.

I think it was the Persians which invented crucifixion so the cross wouldn't be a "pagan symbol" from the Romans but I don't see the relevance of that seeing how Christ saw fit to use the cross as the means of His death - pagan origins or not.
The cross has become an easily recognized symbol of our redemption and the early Christians made use of the symbol quite regularly as there is an overwhelming use of it in the catacombs as well as the early practice of making the 'sign of the cross.'

  • @SancteAlphonsus
    @SancteAlphonsus 11 ปีที่แล้ว

Like I said - no Catholic follows a cross (your words). We follow the Church established by Christ. The cross was the instrument chosen by Christ to effect the redemption and He makes use of the *mental imagery* of the cross throughout His preaching (like when He tells us to take up our crosses daily etc.) as well as St. Paul. Search the NT usage of the word 'cross' and you will see that it is used throughout.

  • @SancteAlphonsus
    @SancteAlphonsus 11 ปีที่แล้ว

I don't know of a single Catholic who follows a symbol. The Catholic Church was founded by Christ Mt16:18 and History bears this out. When Christ ascended into Heaven He didn't give the Apostles Bibles and tell them to hand them out and let everyone pick and choose what they want to believe. No, He established a Church which has the power to teach in His name, to bind and to loose and he who does not want to hear the Church let him be to thee as a Heathen and a publican.

The verses you gave don't even say the word priest anywhere in them. Yes, of course I agree with private prayer, as do all genuine Catholics. Indeed, living the Lord's Prayer is even more important than saying the words. I agree. However, did He ever say you were forbidden from repeating Scripture? Last time I checked, He used Scripture as prayer many times.

Well, I don't ever want to outright ignore somebody's mistaken comments, because maybe, just MAYBE, they'll show a little common sense and see where they went wrong if I can help to point them in the right direction.

You're not free to come up with your own doctrine concerning the Trinity. It is 3 persons in one being - all of them being equally God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. This is part of Divine Revelation and has been infallibly taught by the Church since the beginning. Any teaching that is contrary is heretical.

  • @SancteAlphonsus
    @SancteAlphonsus 11 ปีที่แล้ว

'Holy Father' is a term used to describe the office not the person. Sure there has been a few unholy Popes just as there was an unholy Apostle. To say that no one is holy except Jesus is not true since Christ calls us all to be holy and St. Paul refers to the Apostles as Holy (Eph 3:5) - which is what the Pope is - a successor of St. Peter.

The Blessed Trinity is clearly established in the Bible and taught authoritatively in the Bible. Christ taught to baptize in the *name* of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. There are numerous instances of God revealing Himself as a Trinity. It is one of the core beliefs of Christianity.

Why did Jesus tell his apostles, "stay up and pray with me" if they're not allowed to pray in heaven? They do pray in heaven, in fact, it's in Revelations chapter 5.
