Popes do not choose successors. The holy spirt chooses them. Not sure why he choose one who persecutes traditionalist but allows tango masses.
The Holy Spirit does not choose the pope. This is not Catholic teaching. There have been numerous wicked popes in the history of the Church and the Holy Spirit certainly would not choose a morally wicked person for the papacy!!! Wherever there is wealth, influence and power the wicked and power hungry are attracted, this includes the Church in all ages. When Jesus promised his Church would last to the end of the age, this promise is fulfilled by the Holy Spirit's guidance in spite of wicked men infiltrating positions in the institutional body of the Church. Remember the Church Militant is the sum total body of faithful Catholics who adhere to her magisterium, not necessarily including the episcopate or the pope. For example Pope Honorius was condemned by a church council after his death for not defending Catholic teaching adequately i.e. for being negligent in his duty to "look after my sheep". That's not the Holy Spirit's working but man's.
