I think that the Leaf did great for Nissan regarding the technical knowledge it has provided the company in EV production. For me is the perfect city transportation module. However, as you said, they need to build affordable EVs ($20K to $25K).

Picked up a used 2020 Nissan Leaf SL Plus in May 2021 and I absolutely love this vehicle. I’ve driven the hell out of it and racked up 21,000 miles in the first year of use. It has become our primary transportation vehicle and has saved us a ton on gas. Not to mention I have a free EV charger at work and a 8.6 kWh solar panel system at home. Been to Las Vegas twice in it from Los Angeles, granted we needed to stop twice along the way for two 30 minute chademo quick charges.

I leased a Leaf last spring and while it’s a good city car, the lack of a water cooled battery, and to a smaller extent the ChaDeMo plug makes it impossible to use as a solo vehicle. It was a great entrance to electric cars but I’m really looking forward to better EVs

I prefer that automakers come out with more hybrids, at least for the short term, instead of trying to get everyone into EVs right away. I have no way to charge an EV or plug-in hybrid at home, and I don't want to have to depend on charging stations alone to keep my car running.

I like the ideas for cars and I hate that Nissan doesn't make something to compete with the Prius and most manufacturers don't. But the hybrid RAV4 or any hybrid SUV is the worst mistake money can buy. It only gets a few more mpg than a rav and its at least 8 grand more on the MSRP not even mentioning dealer pricing on a hybrid

It really depends on the yearly mileage you do, how fast the battery charge and if you go for a lease instead of buying ..
It’s a puzzle but for me, i’ll go for a lease.
      I do about 8000 miles/ year.
Leasing means that you dont care to use commercial level 3 fast charge. It makes the battery of the car life shorter, but since you lease, it wont affect you.
That level 3 fast charge takes 30 min from 20% to 80%.
      So, Because i do only 8k miles/year..
      i can fully charge the car once a month .. that’s 30 minutes/month
In Canads, i can lease for 3 years for about 350$ USD/month.
      So .. 30 min/month for 350 USD taxes in..
That’s a pretty sweet deal in my book.

The Leaf has been a brilliant torch-bearer for EVs, a great introduction to electric motoring for so many of us. I really hope the HangOut concept makes it to production for the US market, and Nissan will keep it low-spec, practical and affordable.

We picked up a 2022 S Plus and got it for $25K after the $7500. It's our first EV and we love it! Coming from a WRX and a GTI, the acceleration on the S Plus from 30-60 is so much fun. It's comfortable and practical and also fun to drive. We put 6K miles on her already in less than 3-months- Great car!

I love my 2018 LEAF. It’s a fun car that does everything I need a daily driver to do. It’s not perfect, but no car is. Mine has only one rapid charge in its life, probably the factory test charge, and that is very likely why it has no degradation. I charge at 6kw and use the charge timer to delay charging to finish just before I leave for work. That means that I’m not charging a hot battery, and in the winter my battery is warm when I leave for work. The LEAF was the first mass market EV, of course they didn’t get everything right. I’d bet money some enterprising person is looking at how to swap in salvage Tesla cell modules and use a can bridge to talk to them.

I loved the Leaf, but this is not surprising given that they were unwilling to add liquid cooling and CCS. I do think they have great value if you do your research and understand it's limitations. It should not be the primary car, but can work really well as a second car assuming you can charge at home and never need to use it for a long road trip.

I agree with the Nissan Hang-Out concept as a LEAF replacement - what an incredible move that would be. The Hang-Out is the first concept out of Nissan in over a decade that actually gets me excited. The market feels ripe for someone to put out another compact ultra-versatility vehicle like the Element/xB/cube.
I haven't been a fan of Nissan's reliability in comparison to Honda/Toyota, but the shift to a total electric drivetrain may give them an opportunity to "reset" their fortunes there. (most of their issues have been with poorly made CVTs - a non-factor for an EV)

  • @baldheadlogic

Great Info Kirk. Nissan needs more interesting stuff like last year. To me, the Altima refresh announced recently is not enough. The Sentra is nice looking but where is the higher performance version. The Ariya should do well when it come out but that was delayed already and may be pushed back in to 23.

  • @marqh984
    @marqh984 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

I’m looking forward to getting my hands on an Ariya…it’s much bigger than what the pictures lead on, but the delays are very concerning! I thought by now, Nissan would have kept the Murano hybrid & Rogue Hybrids going…but they didn’t….if they did, I think they would have a better grip on the market, with at least one of the most popular suvs (the rogue) being a hybrid or possible EV by now. I think they are really missing out on great opportunities to stay relevant in todays market.

Kirk, as a former employee of a Nissan dealer IT HURTS ME A LOT that these 🤡🤡at Nissan keep doing a few competitive products (Altima, Frontier, Rogue) and then TAKE THEIR SWEET TIME updating them to be competitive.
I see the Ariya as TOO EXPENSIVE for their niche (it's closer in size to the Rogue Sport / Qashqai, and that size is not selling like 🥞in North America). "If" Nissan see fit to sell the BET pickup and the smaller crossover at reasonable prices (both cheaper than the almost Tesla Model 3 money Nissan will ask for the Ariya) then they "could" be saved. Otherwise, see Infiniti (and Mitsubishi) out of USDM by '30 and Nissan by '35.

So, about a month ago one of the Dealers I previously contacted telephoned me and said he just got in a 2023 Leaf Plus. I drove immediately and bought it. My 2017 Leaf spent a winter in Idaho and three hot summers in Scottsdale with no issues. I love this new Leaf! But for most folks it might be best to have it as a local run around vehicle. I did take a long distant trip with three friends and for that trip I rented from Hertz an ICE vehicle.

Yeah, Nissan needs something to get the USA market excited about them. Ariya looks good but is it good enough to be bought in numbers over its competitors? Nissan used to be big here but sales have shrunk. I agree with all the observations presented here from no more cars under the Leaf name, more like 5 vs. 15 cars by decade's end and some sort of crossover version of the Hangout might create a buzz for Nissan. Right now, Nissan and Infiniti are pretty flat so some hit product, or just one that makes people notice Nissan more, would be welcome.

There’s a wide open space in the electrified market that seems to have been overlooked. Somebody really needs to make a plug in hybrid SUV/pick up with the first 30-ish miles achieved on electricity, and then the gas motor will take over, to make towing more simplified. Until there are trailer accessible charging stations, it’s MUCH more convenient to tow with an ice engine. Just a thought, I know I would buy one.

One of the big problems with the leaf was that Nissan, with its head firmly up its rear end, didn't actively cool the battery. Cost saving measure, as usual with Nissan. The Nissan what?

Leaf was from the, “let’s make the EV truly ugly so people don’t buy it phase.” But sadly Nissan has made hideous cars for years. That’s not an opinion. It’s a fact they have frumpy designs and look like rental cars while Mazda one upped them on every model. Finally the Pathfinder is a new direction I hope.

Nissan dropped the ball with the Leaf. The redesign needed to set a new standard to keep competitors at bay. Instead we got new styling and hardly any increase in range for the initial release.
