    Road Cycling Vlog: Foolish Things
    I've been tinkering again!
A bike fit is not a cheap thing. Its actually quite an investment in you and your cycling. Once you have the correct position worked out all scientifically, the last thing you should be doing is fiddling with the bike.
Well, that is exactly what I have done. Since I bought my Cannondale Synapse road bike back in November I had been having a fair few bike fit issues, so much so that I couple of weeks ago I had After having a professional bike fit done. The new position was pretty good until I swapped over and rode my Trek Madone road bike and the difference was chalk and cheese. The Trek was perfect.
I then got the tape measure out and started to tinker. Probably not the wisest thing to go against the wisdom of a professional bike fitter but if it resulted in the Cannondale fitting me as well as the Trek it would be worth it.

Hi Leonard, this is a great video. Back in October I suddenly developed a major problem with my right knee. I literally woke up one morning and could not put any weight on it. Being 59 at the time, I thought that this is what getting old must be like? Nearly all of my life I have lifted weights and played tons of ice hockey. Fast forward to late winter, my knee issue improved but still painful after skating. As a TH-cam enthusiast I watch a lot of videos on cycling, nutrition, fitness etc... because I, like you being a heavier cyclist always looking for betterment in my athletic life. I weigh 127 kilos :( (280 lbs). The bright side is I am very strong. To the point, I recently purchased a program from a TH-cam-er after watching and studying copious amounts of his videos. He is legit. Anyhow your knee pain may be due to the fact the since you may only be cycling as a means to fitness your hips, glutes, may need to be trained. And you mentioned mobility, he is very much an advocate. So his regimen encompasses training as an athlete not a singular focus on pushing weights in a gym. If you want the name of this TH-cam-er I would be glad to provide that to you. In the meantime, if you try some body weight squats, lower back hyper extensions, and a good stretching program, I think you might enjoy some relief from knee pain.
    Cheers!

Glad to hear you have got your cannondale sorted. Bike positioning can be about trial and error. I have three bikes, each with different geometry and I have got used to the fact that I ride each one differently and each one feels different, which I like. My trek is a long distance endurance racer, comfortable, fast, relaxed stem position; my bianchi is quick, nimble, better suited over shorter distances, has a lower more aggressive stem position; my specialized has a higher stem position, almost sit up and beg, excellent for comfortable all day cruising. I try and use all three bikes regularly, so I am used to them. Each of them feels like an old shoe in their own different way.

I am a recent viewer of your blogs and find them enthralling! Well done. Re the knee trouble I have two observations 1) Have you considered reviewing the axle length you are using? Your knees do appear to swing out on each pedal stroke and I wonder if a slightly longer axle would stop that. 2) Reverting back to using toe clips as an experiment - They give a good range of movement for the foot and would allow you to change the foot/leg position whilst on a ride? Just a thought

Rule of thumb when there is knee pain; Pain in the front of the knee, your seat height from bottom pedal stroke (pedal closest to the ground level) is too low, and Knee pain in the back of the knee means your seat height is too high from bottom pedal stroke.

Just a cautionary note, if that’s a carbon steerer on those forks then you ideally want to cut the steerer and push the stem cap bung further down the steerer so the stem clamps around the bit with the bung in it.
If it’s clamped below then there is the possibility that the steerer might be damaged and fail.
If you don’t want to cut the steerer, then fit the spacers back in and flip the stem or get one with a greater negative offset to get the bars low enough.

I love cycling it's a true joy but it's not good for a well balanced physique, if we do only cycling then regardless of bike fits, tightness in ligaments, poor flexibility and muscle imbalances are inevitable! It's going to be different for everyone depending on lifestyles and movement patterns but I would invite people who 'only cycle' to experiment and perhaps try a yoga or a pilates class, then it will soon become apparent that cycling fitness is quite specific it's not all round fitness. Age need not have to equal lack of strength flexibility balance or mobility.

Great videos! I’ve enjoyed them all.
You may have gotten the knee pain sorted out by now but the cleat position dictates the travel of your knees. Once I moved my cleats such that my feet sat in a natural position, it became more comfortable, my knees tracked straight up and down and I also experienced better power transfer.

No foolish things whatsoever, friend ;) I'm riding vintage bikes now mainly, being that I live in Tuscany and there are plenty of "races" like the Eroica. You have an Eroica too in GB, right? It's great fun, lots of wonderful people participating. If you need a suitable old bike, there are still plenty of them available out there and prices are very low compared to modern ones. I can suggest brands like De Rosa, Colnago, Benotto, Bianchi, Moser, beautiful examples of glorious times in cycling history. Keep up your great job! You have amazing surroundings and landscape. Different but sure not worse than Tuscany. Saluti

I too have knee issues. I was using the Shimano "yellow" cleats. These cleats have a large lateral movement. I changed them to the "blue" version. Their lateral play is greatly reduced. This in conjunction with proper cleat placement was the key for me. My cleat placement is much different for each leg. My right leg was broken twice and I had the A.C.L. reconstructed twice for that leg. In the end. The right cleat is positioned towards the toe by 5 to 7 centimeters. No more knee pain. Everyone is different. Have a look. Sometimes the most minor adjustment of the cleats will make a huge difference.

Glad the fit is getting refined further: small steps in the right direction beats multiple stabs in the dark that put you back a step anyway! It’s a good plan to tackle another 100km ride if you’re feeling game! The science does seem to hold true that the longer endurance fitness needs less frequent attention once it’s been built up, than the shorter stuff. Go for it!

Your knee pain is highly likely coming from from your feet perhaps try some wedges inside your shoes under your insoles.
Specialized make a varus wedge this will allow pressure on the ball of your foot and hopefully stop your knees rolling inwards...Do some research leonard you`ll find your way.Happy new year bud.

Hi. This is the first of your videos I've watched. Excellent, thanks v much, I've subscribed. I have a Trek Madone too, also 5 years old. I like it, but even after a professional bike fit, it was never quite perfect, still not sure why. On an impulse, I recently bought a Trek Emonda SL6. The bike shop were good but don't do bike fits ("just measure it up to your old bike, it'll be fine"). I also bought new shoes, pedals and cleats from them which , again, they just put on with an estimated position. Lo and behold, with no adjustment, it seems perfect! Like yourself I'm a big fella and I need to lose some pounds. I'm currently training for the Lap the Lough sportive in N Ireland, about 100 miles all told. I've started to get a bit of knee pain so I'd be very interested to hear if you manage to solve yours. Look forward to watching your other videos.

It looks to me as if one of your knees is closer to the top tube than the other. Quite normal, but in my case I found that turning the cleats on one foot a bit outwards balanced it up a bit, and then my knee pain went away. So I wonder if something similar might help you. The cleat position that gives me most comfort is quite different for each foot, but I expect this is not unusual.

Not foolish at all! I'm sure the chap who fitted you knows how to...
But I personally believe that when you tweak things to your needs/liking it feels right in a mysterious way.
I might add that the spacers on top may not be good as the tension of the stem should be backed up underneath by the fork tube tensor... allowing 3_5mm on top then stem position should be 100% backed up for nm-torqueing...
All this is especially important if your top fork tube is 100% carbon...

It must be a thing with the Synapse. Yes, the haters will certainly hate. Just ignore them.

Faulty positioning of cleat = one of causes for knee pain, no?

Hmmm! One tangential issue that arises from your video is that, having paid for a 'professional bike fit', you felt it necessary to carry out a number of further adjustments. That's quite worrying, isn't it. I've never had one, but I had assumed that a 'professional bike fit' would produce the optimal set, otherwise what is the point? Any illumination much appreciated. Thanks for the interesting video.

That is a very good question. A bike fit aims to adjust the bike so that the critical angles on your body confirm as close as possible to a theoretical ideal. Sometimes that is not possible or if it is, it’s not comfortable. The best possible bike fit is the one that works for you regardless of the theory.

You seem to be shifted to the left... also: you have too many spacers over your stem. Your compression plug is useless that way

It all boils down to diet. I eat too much of the wrong things. Losing weight is 80% what you eat and only 20% exercise.

It was fiddling around with the position that too ages to set up with the professional bike fit!
I can send you a jersey. Email me for details. leonard@jollygoodvelo.com

I didn’t believe a bike fit was more than just lining up the saddle and jumping on the bike. I went 1.5 years without one thinking my back pain, knee pain, shoulder fatigue, hand numbness, etc., was all part of being a cyclist. Took another cyclist to run me down and suggest I get one cause I didn’t "look right" on my bike. I researched it and got one and it was one of the best investments I made for myself. It’s so dialed in that when a cleat broke and I stopped by a nearby cycling shop, I could tell instantly my foot position was wrong after they replaced it. I ended up calling my bike shop and peddled there to have it adjusted to my measurements. I rode the entire way feeling the knee pain I felt before the fit. I say all this to say, my best guess it is more than likely your cleat position which transitions with you from bike to bike. I’d start with that and/or your foot position inside your shoe which may require some adjustment. Either way, I’m glad you share your experiences, Pro and con cause it’s a reminder for everyone we’re not alone in experiencing them.

You are probably 20kg overweight and for all the years I have been watching your videos you don't seem to have lost any, and that I think is the root cause of your knee issues.
