Ren explained it far better than I could but he basically said the cello is the closest instrument to a singing voice and the drums is the closest instrument to rapping add some beatboxing on top and he's a human metronome.
Ren filmed this not long after his return to England from his long stay in Canada. I think it reflects his joy being back at home in England. It is delightful, and the use of strings is so evocative!
Your face when the “seagul sounds” come in and then Ren starts singing. It’s just magical, isn’t it? And yes, Ren is a punk poet to music, a voice for the people who know struggles 🖤
Your reactions are so conversational! I feel like I'm hearing a friend talk about a subject they're really passionate about and it makes me happy that they're in their element. Lots of great takes, and interesting music theory - I always love hearing about someone else's craft ✨
I'm not sure if anyone's mentioned this yet (tried looking through the comments), but the bassist from The Verve was so impressed with Ren's retake of their song he gifted him a new guitar ❤
I was hoping someone would mention recognition by The Verve. What a proud moment for both parties. I would have loved to have seen the reactions of the member(s) of the band.
Loved your “punk poet” breakdown. Yes! That fits. Love your reactions. I hope you’re feeling well. I can tell you feel and think deeply about life. It comes through the screen. Be well my friend ❤
Thank you, I've had a difficult couple of weeks to be fair but things are looking up. I think too deeply about life sometimes 😆 Same to you my friend ✌️🧡
That was a great reaction conversationally and musically… I will from now on picture Mozart rocking out saying we need more cow bell I mean staccato… 🫶🏻
This was a wonderful reaction. ❤️ It always baffles me how Ren can compose strings without any music theory or formal music education. 😆Perhaps it's more common than I think? Idk😂His Piano instrumental song Mackay, dedicated to a friend who lost his life is beautiful. He says a little about it in his description and or pinned comment. Don't remember exactly.
I absolutely loved what you had to say about this video. It really is about empathy and taking care of each other. I love the original, and both of Ren's versions. It's such a beautiful song. I'd love to see you watch Ren's video titled One Million Subscribers: Defining Success. I think it would really resonate with you. 😊
Or the harmony of opposites that viewed together make beauty instead of division, harsh beauty, but real. Those opposites in harmony can create beauty more beautiful than we can imagine, at least now, in the moment we are living in, which is only exaggerating the separateness and division. That's why I love Ren, for his wisdom and beauty he creates in this world. Great reaction, I love when people give inspiration instead of despair. Thank you. Love and respect ❤
IT works out anyway, cuz this is the better one…. Glad to hear your mood’s on the up … we all have those times…. Trying despite everything… punk poetry… that’s a great description! Thanks for redoing it…and doing this version…. Beautiful.
I love both versions, but they both inflect quite differently. This one is genuinely bittersweet, haunting even. The other is more uplifting. They're both fantastic!
Enjoyed your reaction & social commentary if you like the Cello Ren has another song called “Street Lights” with a band called Trick the Fox 🦊 this was when he was really young! 😅
I am SO appreciative of your insights and the way you explain the choices Ren made with the composition of this piece. I do not play instruments or read music, but I have always emotionally responded to the choices good composers make. Your explanations educate me and put words to what I experience. So, thank you. In addition, Ren's ability to match lyrics to the music just elevates the listening experience. Also, you've done an excellent job with your dubbing him a punk poet. This song resonates with all of us eeking out a living in every nook and cranny of this globe we call home. I look forward to more of your Ren journey. Wishing you all peace, happiness, and abundance from Washington state, USA. ❤
I've never been a musician, yet understand good music. I very much appreciate your musical insights when it comes to Ren. His composing often flies under the radar because he presents so much to the listener to soak in. It's great to see reactors who focus on this side of his genius.
Sorry I missed the premier. Went back to the start, and what a lovely reaction . Great to have a musical reaction along with the lyrics too. Doing a great job Dan, really enjoying your reactions, knowledge and comments .
Love the JCC comparison. Was lucky to see John live about 15 years ago in a nice, intimate venue and they both have a superb charisma that isn't 'starry' or supercilious, it comes from their desire to speak out for all the people whose voices are so often unheard.
Absolutely love strings to. I love this acoustic version of song best. Love birds sounds from the strings at end. Great reaction love wellness to everyone ❤❤❤🫶
i see what you did there with RENdition XD big props to you for wanting do do this right :) love to see you smile through the strings. Also: i am always impressed how Ren uses pauses, complete absence of sound, as part of his songs. Its SO interessting, draws you in and is at least as good as a drop. Here he did it at 5:55 (your video time) and i was like: *head perks up* what?!
Sorry I missed the live chat. I think I have two copies of Urban Hymns. Ren arranged this for SGP - the festival he performed at last summer - and said after that he wanted to do a video too. Good to see you smiling at the end. It is so tough to decide which is your favourite. To carry some of what you mentioned over, you may chime with Dominoes. It's an earlier one, but should be required listening for any teen.
There is also a string quartet (well again two cellos) used in Money game 3. Great video for that song, 3 long continues shots. First half just piano and then just the string quartet, simple string arrangement but beautiful. And great performance from Ren th-cam.com/video/nyWbun_PbTc/w-d-xo.html
If you want to hear staccato on a cello take a look at 2CELLOS - Thunderstruck [OFFICIAL VIDEO] 🥰 😁 As per usual loved your reaction to our boi Ren again! And I got a new addition to my "how people call/classify Ren"-list, Punk Poet! Thank you! 😉
You are so right. A punk poet like John Cooper Clark, how true. Luckily for us, that is where the likeness ends, Ren is easier on these old eyes and ears!! That is one of my favourite ever Ren lines _Mad how small altercations can define who we are_ That line is not just about having too much to drink in a pub. It can apply to every human on earth. Any time you have a petty, squabble with someone, can impact our perceptions of ourselves, as well as how those around us view the incident from the outside. Loved how you described the staccato as against the melody. Makes sense now. Thank you.
I met Scroobius Pip once, we were performing at the same festival (he was main stage of course and I was off in some tent somewhere 😆) and honestly, he was the nicest guy! Love his music 🧡🧡🧡
Love it! We all judge, it’s part of human nature and can keep us safe but If everyone checked their judgements validity, the world would be a much better place ❤
It is punk poetry, and yet it's Shakespeare, it's Prince, It's Jeff Buckley, It's John Frusciante, it's Dr, Dre, it's Emeniem, it's Sting, it's Cillian Murphy, and it's Stanley Kubrick... Ren is layered and he's reminding us all of the potential music has. Great Reaction.
At the start of Screeches tale, the graffiti next to him, looks to me like a characature of John Cooper Clarke. No one has ever mentioned it before, but I wondered if I imagined it, and if not, did he choose that spot deliberately.
If you haven’t done the tales of Jenny and screech (13 min version, 3 songs make a trilogy) what you were saying about street life and not being given much of a chance is illustrated quite well, masterfully actually

And your "rambles" are fantastic. Don't stop.
Aw thank you! ✌️🧡

Not gonna lie "that's how Beethoven got down" made me legit laugh out loud. Also love the breakdown of why this vibes!
😆🤗🧡

So glad you loved this version! Rens live acoustic versions of his songs always hit differently 🥹💜
It's beautiful 🧡
You are becoming one of my favorite reactors, your knowledge of both the societal as well as the musical/ compositional aspects is really enriching.
Great reaction 😊 I think this version has more of an emotional element that really connects people!!
Thank you, definitely! ✌️🧡
I think this version is so brilliant like a new re-take, modernization of the classic.
100% 🧡🧡🧡

I love both versions, but they both inflect quite differently. This one is genuinely bittersweet, haunting even. The other is more uplifting. They're both fantastic!
Happy unfortunate happenstance that caused a revisit and opportunity to react to the live version. Isn't it an engaging version!
Punk poet. Yes! I can't get enough of these strings, and placed in this setting. ❤ Thanks Dan
🙏✌️🧡
This is so beautiful 🎉❤
I always find out whether a reactor is empathic or not by how they speak about Screech in the Tales. He's only fourteen years old.
🧡

I like the punk poet tag - he's also a fan of Mike Skinner from The Streets - I can hear the influence
Nice, yeah I get that too! ✌️🧡
Hyped for when you do the Money Game trilogy. Also don't deny yourself the tangents it was a really nice insight into your way of thinking

It was worth waiting for a new video! You should jump on the money game trilogy path. You will deeply enjoy it!!!

I would also equate Ren to the late Benjamin Zephaniah too. A definite punk/urban poet and sadly missed since his passing.
