    Today I too, went to look at a 60-year old plus Cat that was for sale. After installing batteries, checking fluid levels and making sure everything was in neutral, I gave the starter switch a turn. Before I turned the key, I did notice that one of the brake pedals was real stiff. The tractor barked a little then came to life. I let it idle for a bit while enjoying the sound of a straight pipe. I then raised the blade, moved it into 1st gear, the Johnson in forward, then attempted to move the flywheel clutch lever back. The diesel's rpms started to drop down and the tracks remained motionless. I checked earlier to make sure the brake lock was disengaged so I'm guessing that one of the brakes is frozen. The seller appeared to have a lot of "irons in the fire" so I think the tractor will probably remain motionless for awhile.

    I honestly had a huge grin when she fired the first time. I do believe this is in a lot better shape than old red. She just needs a little love and attention and you'll have another friend for life.

    Also, mad props for taking the time to clean the fuel tank properly and adding the 2 stroke oil. Too many times in these revival videos, I see people just add new fuel over garnished fuel, not realizing that all that varnish will stick the valves. Also, it appeared that you used WD-40 in the cylinders. This is also very good. Too often I see people using stuff like PB Blaster or ATF thinking that it'll just burn off, when it actually doesn't. When they use thick oils like that, the rings just float over that shit, then when the fire starts happening, that stuff is just glazing to the cylinder walls and sticking up the rings. Sealed Power is the primary manufacturer of piston rings. What ever "brand" of rings you have, odds are they were actually manufactured by Sealed Power. When you initially assemble an engine, they recommend using WD as opposed to engine oil, so you have actually used what ring manufacturers want in there.

    If someone replaced that switch with a typical "CW to on" "CCW to off" the switch must be "off" (OPEN) because it actually shorts the magneto primary to kill the pony. In other words, "switch on (closed)" kills the magneto spark.

    One the main reasons why i watch your channel other then the rescues /it's your laid back easy explaining even though i know most what your doing but it's things i have forgotten that my grandfather taught me back in the 1960's ! yeh im not able to do most the stuff you do now days but back in the 70's & 80's i could make any engine run from lawn mower to a big cat or D-9 but the many years leaning over a hood fixing them took a major toll on my spine and i had give it all up back in the mid 90's !

    Well hello, here a friendly shout-out from The Netherlands 👋🏼👋🏼.
    I do love to see & hear you talking over your discoveries and the way you go along with them. The ups and downs, all very interesting!
    The way you (now) are giving us "our daily view' over this barn find, is great!! If you manage to keep this up (daily footage) that would be really awesome.
    (I follow a Dutch technician who upload daily his work (s in progress)). He is (also kind of) into track driven machines (military tanks). @MasterMilo ...

    Good day. Diesel in Columbus, GA is $5.09/gallon. In my opinion, Diessel should be the cheapest of all fuel products. This has affected the prices of everything that is moved by truck. Prices have risen 50 - 100% because the Alaskan pipeline was shut down. Have good days!

    • @jamesmartell8917
      @jamesmartell8917 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Remember back in the 70's, diesel used to be 1/2 the price of regular bronze gas. It was a by product of the procedure to manufacture gasoline, plus they had to add lead to the mix. Diesel and unleaded should be cheaper than bronze, or the old regular!!

    Hi, i know its a bit late but to remove the rust inside of the tank i can recommend citric acid. you get it as a powder to clean coffee machines. mix it with warm water (max 80°C) and let it sit for an hour. flush it with clean water and after that with a bit gasoline. if you want to prohibit new rust, you can also use a bit phosphoric acid after the water flushing. just enough that all surfaces are wet and let it dry. it has the same effect than rust converter and change the surface from iron to iron phosphate where the oxigen cant connect anymore. the surface is solit and you can even paint over it.

    Cleaning the tank. Lacquer thinner, or Acetone will dissolve the old gummy fuel. Best to put steel nuts in the tank to shake them around. This way you can remove them with a magnet. Many of these old cat tanks have a lip that makes it hard to just let them fall out. Muriatic acid will take out the rust. With this you need to do it outside on a nice day and then flush it with water. Don't let it sit too long with the Acid. If the tank has enough rust to open up leaks you will find them.

    Best practice is to always trailer or tow a vehicle forward as that is the way they are made to go at speed. Bed liners, junk in the box, pop open windows, sunroofs are all made to go fast one way,,, forward.

    I know nothing about these machines but I get the impressionm this one's in great shape. Nothing seems to be worn or rotted and the fasteners you've tried are coming apart as designed. Any problems, so far, are due to sitting or to the fuel festering.
    I'm guessing you're not going to face too many mechanical, or structural, issues but the problems might start when you get into the hydraulics. Lines and cylinders might cause you some grief and some $$$s. Once you get her out in the open, get a steam washer on her and you'll see a whole different beast. That simple gesture will let her know you mean business and she'll start to co-operate. Once you replace the arm-rest, you'll soon be ready to push some dirt around.😂👍
