  • 1920. Pathé paper label. No. 2040. Recorded at 75 RPM. Vallin performs Marguerite's Romance from Berlioz' The Damnation of Faust so skillfully/beautifully with L'Opera Comique orchestra under the direction of Albert Carré!
She also recorded this aria later in life --in 1955 she was accompanied by the Paseloup Orchestra, conducted by Pierre Cruchon. It is truly exquisite.... and can be found on CD now through Malibran Records.
Vallin was in full stride during 1920 when she made this particular Pathé recording, and 34 years old. She had taken the Buenos Aires music scene by storm, performing to great acclaim. She was a well loved, respected and must-see performer there for her entire career, both in opera and recitals.
Stray fact: In late 1949 she was invited to tour Australia. I found a photo of her holding 2 Koala bears!
This 1920 record is played with a Pathé adaptor, on a 1914 Victrola IX.
If you listen carefully to the 3 to 4 seconds after the song has ended you will be able to hear a man saying something on the recording.
    D'amour l'ardente flamme,
    Consume mes beaux jours.
Ah! la paix de mon âme
    A donc fui pour toujours!
    Son départ, son absence
    Sont pour moi le cercueil,
    Et loin de sa présence,
    Tout me paraît en deuil.
    Alors ma pauvre tête
    Se dérange bientôt,
    Mon faible cœur s'arrête,
    Puis se glace aussitôt.
    Sa marche que j'admire,
    Son port si gracieux,
    Sa bouche au doux sourire,
    Le charme de ses yeux,
    Sa voix enchanteresse,
    Dont il sait m'embrâser,
    De sa main, la caresse,
    Hélas! et son baiser,
    D'une amoureuse flamme,
    Consument mes beux jours!
Ah! le paix de mon âme
    A donc fui pour toujours!

Wonderful Mary, another rapturous performance! I find it fascinating when there are stray voices at the start or end of records...

      @@burmesecolourneedles4680 yes!
And in this instance the talking comes immediately after the singing stops! Maybe that indicates he was assuming they would not make this the final "cut"? Dont know how that all worked back then (oh...or now, either!😁)!
