This was my introduction to Sonic Youth. I had read about them in Rolling Stone, but had never heard a note of their music. Within 48 hours of seeing this I owned Daydream Nation. Imagine my surprise to find this was the weakest song on the album. They were my favorite band for the next 5 years.
Holy fuck I love Sonic Youth. Wasn't old enough to catch them in their Daydream Nation days but I was lucky enough to see them do a set in '09 at Live on the Levee (a free show St. Louis puts on every 4th of July).
I remember this show as a kid... It was easily the most obscure thing on regular/ non cable tv... Where else could you live see live performances from sonic youth, the residents, early RHCP... I would try to catch it every week
right? she's not even a particularly petite lady, but that Thunderbird is still fucking huge. also really loved the white BC Rich she played for a long time.
I saw them on the Goo tour in a 650 capacity room and they played a nice selection of songs from Daydream Nation. I think I caught them at just the right time. After that I saw them several different times and was never disappointed.
Amazing band if I ever had the chance to see them perform live. It's all such an inspiration. Though it's saddening, yet I am somewhat put at ease to know that there won't ever be another band in history that will be like Sonic Youth. All that could've only been thought up by the people in that band.
I always thought their best songs were something like this... fast & punky influence with the noise/feedback thing... best played loud. PS Kim had 1000% stage presence
S. Miller Kendrick Lamar, Kanye West, Frank Ocean, Radiohead, Beach House, Mount Eerie, Sufjan Stevens, Car Seat Headrest, JPEGMAFIA, Swans, Against All Logic, King Gizzard, Clarence Clarity, Ariel Pink, Yves Tumor, Animal Collective, Tyler, the Creator, Charli XCX, Death Grips, Danny Brown, King Krule, MF DOOM. The list goes on and on. Go out and discover music before trashing music that’s “now.”
I think at first it was slide tunings that were easy to bar (and play with a drum stick). as time wore on and they were expanding it from that, i guess they picked notes for each string that made sense in a progression or that arpeggiated nicely. to be perfectly honest, this is conjecture and i have no idea. im just guessing.
One factor was the ability to play unisons (same note on two or more strings), to get a richer sound. They would often tune the other note off slightly to create a chorus effect
Chris Knight Thurston would achieve the “chorus” effect by slightly bending one of the two identical notes, not via detuning a string, which is how he could easily switch to playing in-tune single-note runs and non-discordant chords during the same song.
@Kid Sunyata your off by about 40 years. you're only saying it's not "avant-garde" because they became successful, and "avant-garde" is in the eye of the beholder. If you're over the age of 12 and referring to yourself as "kid sunyata" you're quite developmentally challenged.
@Kid Sunyata Are you his boyfriend? When they started doing what they were doing, it wasn't cliched, it was new and fresh. If anyone's a cliche it's you, Comic Book Guy. Worst comment ever!
So after the violent, cathartic, blood pumping rock song by Sonic Youth, one of the most extreme bands in alternative music, we cut to a 40s jazz musician? What's the demographic of this show?
he's a super nice dude, too. was lucky to meet him when him and Lance Bangs brought a Sonic Youth documentary here to Memphis. it was my birthday! great gift. he's so boy next door looking. i've never seen him in a shirt without a collar. but he is just a fucking BEAST on drums.
I heard it, but afterwards my ears knew they would never hear anything that could compare to such greatness ever again so they committed suicide leaving me deaf.
When I first tried listening to Sonic Youth, I didn't get what everyone was talking about, but after giving them a second chance I realized there is some really impressive stuff going on here. I ranked Thurston Moore and Lee Ranaldo #71/72 on my list of the 100 best guitarists of all time: bluesdjben.blogspot.com/2017/06/the-100-best-guitarists-of-all-time_10.html
Funny alternate lyrics -- I gotta date with a girl named Cher. We're gonna see 'Cats'. See ya there (!). Can't understand the preceding lyric about J. Mascis.
Dalton Swayze I don't hear the comparison. SY's noise is much more free form, whereas BB is more about distortion on all the instruments and then keeping the mix in the red. Neither is better, just different.
David Sanborn. He's sometimes associated with 'smooth jazz', but he's been professionally associated with many different musical genres through out his career. His show 'Night Music' (aka 'Sunday Night') demonstrates this. A favorite performance from the show (hold on!) -- /watch?v=wCweFfcV7Xo

I still wonder how the hell they chose tunings, and what notes to use.
