Everyone saw the tactics were poor from him. The refusal to substitute his favourite players who were actually poor and the fear to try players who were actually fearless and hungry. His negative tactics were his downfall.
Southgate killed himself at Euros 2024 by sticking to Kane upfront and benching Palmer. Period!

Im no fan of southgates’ cautious, conservative football. But the scrutiny and personal attacks he gets is absolutely wild. The man has reunited the NT and created a close-knit group of players which is incredibly important for any team.

You really thought you would beat Spain playing the way England were playing? What planet do england fans live on? You barely scrapped past Slovakia. It's the same old England beat the teams they are expected to beat then lose to the first top quality opposition they face. England are still a few steps down in quality to teams like Spain.
Context does matter the teams we have come up against are a different calibre to the other teams we faced in previous years Germany Portugal Argentina those are the teams that knocked us out he has had an easy tournament brackets

There are so many similarities between Southgate’s England and Martinez’s Belgium. However, most of us will agree that Martinez is a below-average manager, but many of the same people, such as these panelists, will make 1,000 excuses for Southgate. He’s won nothing and we only get deep in tournaments because we are blessed with incredible talent!!! I get it, him and the FA have improved the culture around the camp and for that we thank him. But he can’t set up a team to WIN! Why are we not allowed to acknowledge reality?? Yes he’s had a great impact, but no he cant go and win you a trophy. That is reality.
Am pleased he has quit his not a good manger of England national team 👎👎👎

One of the guys said he thought Spain was going to get tired ? Based on what really ? England was doing all the running around chasing the ball, don’t know how he came up with that analysis of the game. Said from the start this team was fixed by playing Bellingham as an 8 next to rice and Gordon on the left. Then you make subs to impact the game. The need to play Bellingham higher up the pitch killed the system. Mainoo done a great job but Bellingham could have easily slotted in there from game 1 like he has in previous tournaments.
Southgate has done his bit. Just need to get someone with a clearer sense of style and more decisive tactics ability to utilise more of the squad to conserve energy of key players no favourites and get players that can play/suited to international football. And No sacred cow players....
Also the vast majority of squad is over hyped and didn't bring their A game consistently...

Right decision for Southgate to go. Should have left after the Qatar world cup. Taken England as far as he could but not good enough to get over the line. The first good team England play, they lose.

I don't understand the revisionism with regards to Southgates support. Everyone was behind him in 2018 and 2021 100%. The qatar one there were rumblings because the final felt like maybe his limit but 90% were still behind him. I felt he should have stepped down then, people pretend we should have beat France but it's a myth.
This euros has been different, people were skeptical going into it but he had a chance to prove us wrong, best squad we've had in a long time and especially in relation to the rest of euroe. The reality is we were very poor the whole tournament, no one should be throwing stuff at the guy but the criticism is still valid and I think it's been pretty fair. I don't think we will see the knockouts draw we had here for 50 years. And let's not pretend we weren't 90 seconds from a national embarrassment.
It's very likely we don't make it to the next final but let's be honest if Germany hadn't equalised against the swiss, we wouldn't have gotten to this one either.
He's done a good job but has made the right decision imo.
Southgate is not the problem, players are. Players are not good enough if not for Southgate park the bus tactics england cant pass group stage. Players ball control skill is the main problem that england cant play possessive football.

Terms like golden generation, found a way to win, leggy, need to be retired. Never meant anything in the first place. And are as out of date as footballs coming home.
Shaw being picked whilst being injured set the scene before a ball was kicked in comp. It's been a pain to watch England throughout apart from the results. As boring as watching on ceefax.
Why is it strange? Southgate had a team that should be dominating and asserting themselves onto lesser quality teams. All I ask to be proud of the team and their efforts, never asked for trophy wins.
He should be embarrassed playing a double pivot against Slovakia and Denmark and teams of that level.
And all this best England manager stuff means nothing because he didn't win any trophies and didn't make rhe nation proud and if you was proud of what football was being played I have questions about your standards.
World class striker in Harry kane but the system we are playing isn't getting the best out of him, but persists with playing him and then gets applauded for his subs, we'll no he shouldn't be starting him in the system if its not working which it clearly wasn't.
Show me a manager who drops his captain for a final? All of them when that captain is injured.Southgate was the worst coach at the highest level in the world. Utterly shocking safe football. Any competent coach wins a trophy with the talent in that squad. The final v Italy is the worst coached job in a big game i have ever seen.He got into latter stages by being on the easy side of the draw.He was a terrible coach.
