I think that people back then had much better memory than us. For one, there was less useless information polluting their minds, but also most people could only rely on their memory to retain information as most could not read or write. So they were sharper
I think most people who are surprised about what Silver does in this episode or find it unrealistic have never actually tried to learn something by heart. It's really not that difficult if you sit down and actually try, it's just tedious. I don't think it has to do with better memory or useless information clogging the mind, it's just that you never need to do it. The impressive part here is that he does it under incredible pressure and very quickly, rather than the actual memorisation.
people back then had better memory because they HAD to, we have phones that remember everything for us and even before then paper to write stuff down..
Vane is a very brutal character but I do think he has a good overall arc. My feelings on every character changed so much over the course of the series. I ended up loving some characters I'd disliked early on and hating some I'd loved at first. 😂😂 The power of good storytelling, I suppose.
his hands aren't clean either. And in that moment Eleanor stopped it. So then it becomes what is being judged and who bears the larger guilt in the matter.
@@heyskipj Jack is coming to get Vane because he knows Vane would not approve of it, and Jack expects Vane to put a stop to it. That speaks volumes as to how clean Vane's hands are.
Yeah, and in the 1700's you would have to be very privileged, or a member of the clergy, in order to have easy access to quills, ink & parchment. The common man would not have readily available means to just "copy text".
@@mythicmoth631 I'd bet more people knew how to read and write among 18th century Bahamas pirates than do in a present day Baltimore public school. They just didn't necessarily know English, as pirates came from all nations.
All I'll say is, NONE of the relationships you think you know turn out the way you'd expect!! Jack and John are two of my favorite characters, the craftiest men in the show! Vane is a monster in this 1st season, 100% scary, BUT . . . .Anyway, hating him is completely valid. I love Max, and it's so funny that after this show the actress became The Flash's daughter from the future!!
Glad you guys appreciated the Fruit Fruit Tits Tits scene, it is hilarious, but it also has a lot of the more serious themes of the show embedded within it!
This was such a great show! I hope you watch it through to the end. One thing stands out so significantly and that is you can't trust anyone. The initial couple of seasons shows everyone selling everyone else out and goes on until they have reasons to act otherwise. A#* holes become heroes and some become a#* holes again. Great, great series with the most incredible characters. At some point you come to both love and to hate evryone. There is no way to know what is going to happen and even in the end you never saw it coming. Enjoy!!!!
This show is a masterpiece, super underrated. So many twists and turns its crazy. And a beautiful blend of real History (Anne, Jack, Vane, Guthrie etc) and Treasure Island (Flint, Billy and Silver etc).
Great reaction. You ladies are so intelligent and empathetic that you should love this show that is one of my all-time favorites. Very reasonable that you like some characters and dislike others. So many things happen you may be surprised by the end. Not happy you knew what happened in episode 3, but hope not too much gets spoiled. Thank you for sharing your reactions and hope you continue to enjoy.
@@ak14459 Point noted. That being said, people don’t need to mention specifically to whom it happens. I wonder if there is anything that could be included in the ratings system to warn, possibly even on an episode by episode basis? Or is something already in place? Do you think that would be sufficient warning? I certainly meant in no way to diminish the possible trauma those types of scenes could cause. I definitely understand your concern. Even as an older man, I could never understand anyone’s desire to perform such an act. And, actually, hope to never fully understand them. Again, thanks for your input, and thanks in advance for any more. 🙏🏻
@@Ernwaldo i think they should because if people have a certain emotional connection to a character then they will be way more impacted by something like that happening to them and they deserve to not put themselves through that if they don’t want. some women won’t even watch shows or movies that include that topic at all especially if they have personal trauma like that. i think just listen to women on this one.
Fruit fruit!! At least it's only 3 episodes Lola messed up this time....unlike The Wire, we had 4 full seasons of "newsroom" lol. No big deal but just take the story as it comes. You may love some characters, hate others, and change those opinions on an almost episode by episode basis by how fast everything changes in this world. Also, people had to have better memories back in the day. Probably no libraries with access to resources and you would also have to know how to read. Which many people did not
3:48 I feel like maybe people weren't talking about THAT SCENE in regards to Charles because viewers don't usually blame HIM for what happened. (spoiler for first timers) He had Jack try to sneak her away so that wouldn't happen, and that other asshole caught him. ELEANOR blamed Charles. But he didn't send his men to do that, he was trying to avoid that. He did, however, have to take her prisoner to begin with or his crew would have voted him out or killed him and probably Jack too for the loss of their money.
I can totally understand someone being put off by what happens in episode three. It's a tough scene to watch. I will say that, unlike some shows, it's not done simply for shock value or to be edgy. It becomes the inciting incident for a really powerful arc for two of the characters. The show really hits its stride, story-wise in episode four. It's worth powering past that particular incident, to get to the good stuff on the other side. FWIW, it won't be glossed over or minimized.
I suspect she didn't understand what happened. Her comments about Vane suggest to me she thinks he had something to do with it. Vane was going to let Max go, it was his crew that took matters into their own hands without his knowledge.
This is probably the greatest show from STARZ outside of Outlander which is a show i also feel these ladies would love! I hope they watch Outlander at some point cause they would be obsessed with Jaime and also Jamie and Claire and i just KNOW they would love it.
@@killler240 Vane's crew with Max. They seem pretty clear! It didn't trigger me, but i think it was a common complaint againt the show. Plus there was a backlash from those types of scenes in GOT and TV fans may have been completely saturated with that stuff.
@heyskipj oh yeah. I didn't think much of it. It is a real threat for women and common in the past. Plus, she was already a working woman, which increases the risk even more. It is local storytelling
My favourite character in this show is flint and Ann. This show was really interesting when I first saw it because I was familiar with treasure island. What makes this show great is because of the choices the characters are presented with and reactions to the choices that are being made. We as the viewers get the privilege of seeing all the characters making their choices and the the characters a lot of the times only see the reactions to other characters choices. Yes there are hard moments in this show but it makes the great moments better because of bad moments
TBH I almost gave up on this show after episode 3 cause I don't like to watch that type of thing it just disgusts me. But then the rest of the show was completely different to what I thought it would be, and I was glad I stuck around to the end and Max was my favorite character !
From other reactors, it seems like men really like Vane right away, and women are ambivalent to him. I certainly was! (He grew on me as the seasons went on, but he did not grab me like the other characters did.) Idk if that's because he presents this picture of uber-masculinity with a pretty face that they like, or what, but I do find it fascinating.
You asking what is wrong with Captain Vane.....It is 1700, he is a pirate, there is nothing wrong with him. That is the life of a pirate. Your putting law abiding social standards of 2020 on a unlawful pirate who lives and dies by the sword!! 300 years ago, when there was no United Nations, no USA, no European Union.... He is acting normal!!!
just a quick info. writers of this show mixed actual historical events and historical famous pirate like captain vane and black beard (will appear later in the show) with fictional characters from the famous novel the treasure island characters like captain flint and his crew especially john silver who is the main villain in the novel (events in the show supposed to happen like 20 years before the novel).

Plus Silver didn't have to memorize every word on the page, just the important stuff like dates and coordinates.
I think having phones has really killed my need for memory recall. For example, I use to know so many phone numbers but now I okay know mine
It also wasn't the only time he looked at it. He spent a lot of time studying it, trying to figure out what it meant and why it was so valuable.

Vane truly evolves as a character as the show continues.
You come to adfmire him as things progress, but this early part is so hard to take.
So awesome to have strong opinions about a character out of the gate. Then be surprised at how well he can behave.
