This video is wrong about the law in Texas. The Texas law only applies to non-participants, that is, it would only apply if a spectator assaulted a referee or player. It cannot be used against participants. Of course, the ordinary assault law would still apply, just not the special law that protects sports officials.

If the referee, who I might add is an adult, made racial slurs, then that's wrong also.

This is just like the Marcus Smart incident. Players do something inexcusable, realize they're going to get in trouble, then panic and falsely accuse someone of racism because they know how volatile the subject is right now. Even if the guy said racial slurs (which I doubt), it does not absolve those scumbag players and what they did.

+SeventhkeyOmega You're going to tell someone to google something you obviously didn't even google yourself? "Fighting Words" is a legal doctrine in the United States that limits free speech. If charged with a crime for uttering "Fighting Words" the defendant cannot claim First Amendment protection for saying them. That's it. "Fighting Words" is not a defense to any crime, much less any form of battery. In no state can someone (much less two people) cowardly attack a defenseless person from behind with no warning what-so-ever and then claim immunity from prosecution because at some point in the past the person uttered "Fighting Words." Also, I don't know if you knew this, but the players who hit the referee - NEITHER OF WHOM IS BLACK - say that the referee they attacked didn't use the N-word when referring to either of them, but instead used it in reference to a different player that, rather conveniently, they refuse to identify. So, according to your logic, or complete lack thereof, anyone can attack any person, at any time, in any manner, so long as the victim has uttered "Fighting Words" at any person, at any time in the past. Now how ridiculous is that? I'm white, but I can attack any person who has ever directed a racial slur at anyone other than me, regardless if the person they directed the slur towards is white, black, Hispanic, Asian, Native American, or any other race? smh
